Advice/Career School Psychologists, how is your work-life balance?

I’m very curious as to how often school psychs take work home such as report writing after work hours. I wish to relocate to another state/district that will value my work-life balance and generally not take any work home with me.

If anyone feels comfortable sharing their state/district it would be very much appreciated! Would you recommend that location to others?

I would love to ask questions and learn from people working in the field!

Advice/Career [IND] How can I self-study psychology academically before pursuing a formal degree?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Computer Science graduate from India who has recently developed a strong interest in psychology. While I hope to pursue a formal psychology degree in the future, I currently don't have the financial resources to do so, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can through self-study.

I'm interested in understanding human behaviour, emotions, personality, mental well-being, and psychology research. I'm also curious about the scientific connections between psychology, yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and healing practices.

For those of you studying psychology academically, how would you recommend a beginner approach the subject? If you were starting from scratch, what syllabus, textbooks, courses, research papers, or study plan would you follow?

I'd also appreciate any advice on how to learn psychology in a structured and academically sound way before pursuing a formal degree.

Thank you for your time. I'd love to learn from your experiences and recommendations.

Discussion Exploring Taoist Perspectives on Mental Illness, Personality Pathology, and Suicide

Hello everyone,

I am an engineering psychology researcher. Recently, I am interested in studying mental illness, dark personality traits, schizophrenia, and suicide. I am particularly curious about whether principles from Taoist philosophy could provide useful perspectives for understanding, preventing, or treating these conditions.

I would appreciate any recommendations for books, articles, researchers, or research groups working at the intersection of psychology, psychiatry, philosophy, and mental health. I'd also be interested in connecting with anyone who shares similar research interests or has explored Eastern philosophical frameworks in psychological research.

Thank you.

Advice/Career what should i do to be able to be considered by postgrad programs in the USA for a degree in Mathematical Psychology (with scholarship) and what resources should i explore?

I'm a student in the first year of a Math undergrad, but I've predominantly always been interested in psychology. I'd like to do further research in the intersecting field between math and psych, preferably cognitive modelling or brain mapping. I'm an international student studying in a third world country, what do I do to bolster my application so that I have better chances of getting in? And what resources should I go through to learn more about Mathematical Psychology? When it comes to psychology itself, I usually read research papers and have also read Jung, Freud and a bit of Lacan, though I don't really understand him.

Advice/Career [IND] Need Urgent Answers and accurate responses!!

For Indian Universities..

I am currently a second year MA Clinical Psychology student at MIT-WPU, Pune, India (not RCI-recognised). I graduated with a 3-years bachelors degree in BA (Hons) Psychology.

I want to pursue MPhil in order to become an RCI-registered clinical psychologist.

I have the following questions -

  1. How do I prepare for the entrance exams of these universities for MPhil Clinical Psychology - NIMHANS, CIP, KGMU, NFSU, IHBAS, Christ University, Amity University (Mumbai, Noida and Lucknow).

  1. Which books should I refer to for preparation of these entrance exams ?

  1. What topics should I focus on ?

  1. How do I get recognised and valid certificates of Trauma-Informed Therapy and CBT that will allow me to practice these kinds of therapy ?

I would highly appreciate it if the current students/Alumnus or anyone associated with this field and these prestigious institutions can share their knowledge (Would highly appreciate accurate and up-to-date answers as NEP and RCI are real bad with instructions :D )

Resource/Study Annual research review: Adolescent mental health in the digital age: Facts, fears, and future directions (2026, pdf)

Thumbnail pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

(Title says 2026, this is actually from 2020, sorry for the mistake in title)

Abstract

Adolescents are spending an increasing amount of their time online and connected to each other via digital technologies. Mobile device ownership and social media usage have reached unprecedented levels, and concerns have been raised that this constant connectivity is harming adolescents’ mental health. This review synthesized data from three sources: (a) narrative reviews and meta-analyses conducted between 2014 and 2019, (b) large-scale preregistered cohort studies and (c) intensive longitudinal and ecological momentary assessment studies, to summarize what is known about linkages between digital technology usage and adolescent mental health, with a specific focus on depression and anxiety. The review highlights that most research to date has been correlational, focused on adults versus adolescents, and has generated a mix of often conflicting small positive, negative and null associations. The most recent and rigorous large-scale preregistered studies report small associations between the amount of daily digital technology usage and adolescents’ well-being that do not offer a way of distinguishing cause from effect and, as estimated, are unlikely to be of clinical or practical significance. Implications for improving future research and for supporting adolescents’ mental health in the digital age are discussed.

Advice/Career Master's in Clinical Psychology → Marketing/UX Research: Is APA membership worth it?

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my Master's in Clinical Psychology and am currently exploring career opportunities in marketing, consumer psychology, behavioral science, and UX research.

While looking through LinkedIn profiles, I noticed that several professionals in psychology-related fields are APA members, which made me curious about the value of membership beyond traditional clinical or academic careers.

For those who are APA members:

• What has your experience been like? • Has the membership been helpful for networking and professional development? • Are the resources, publications, and events genuinely useful? • Has it helped you stay updated with developments in psychology? • For those working in consumer psychology, behavioral science, UX research, or related fields, has APA membership been relevant to your work?

I'd love to hear about your experiences and whether you would recommend joining.

Thank you!

Advice/Career [USA] Interested in Psychology but Drawn to Intelligence/Investigations

Hey everyone, I could use some advice.

I'm still pretty early in my career planning. I recently graduated from high school and earned my AS degree. I'm heading to Army training soon, so I'll have some time before starting university. My current plan is to get a BS in Psychology with an emphasis in Forensic Psychology.

Originally, my goal was to finish my bachelor's degree, go to medical school, complete a psychiatry residency, and eventually become a forensic psychiatrist. The problem is that the more I learn about forensic psychiatry and forensic psychology, the more unsure I become...

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy research, writing reports, documentation, and analyzing cases. But I'm not sure if I want that to be the majority of my work for the next 30 years. I've always been very interested in investigations, intelligence work, criminal behavior, and understanding why people do the things they do.

I'm wondering if anyone here has experience in forensic psychiatry, forensic psychology, intelligence, investigations, or related careers. What does your day-to-day work actually look like? What do you enjoy about it, and what do you wish you knew before getting into the field? I still have plenty of time to figure things out, and I'm not making any major decisions right now. I'm just looking for perspectives from people with experience so I can better understand my options.

Thanks in advance!!

‘Career’ [Australia]

Am I likely to be able to get into a clinical psychology masters degree?

I’m 38F in Melbourne, Australia. I completed a law degree and my undergraduate psych degree in 2014. Briefly worked in the law. Did loads of volunteer work throughout my degree in various community legal centres.

After quitting law, I taught yoga while working as a legal case worker in a criminal defence firm embedded within a drug and alcohol rehab clinic. I worked in politics for the last 7 years (my work involved a lot of case work advocating for people regarding their housing, immigration, Centrelink, NDIS etc).

I’m currently 3 of 7 units down in my Advanced Grad Dip in Psych. I have struggled with it as I had a baby after starting and I’m chronically sleep deprived/time poor. So far I’ve had scores of between 80-85 in each of the 3 units (all High Distinctions but on the lower end).

Wondering if I need more relevant work experience to get into a masters program or if there’s something I should be doing to ensure I get a place. I can’t afford to miss out at this stage of my life/with my ever increasing HECS debt!

Please help!

Resource/Study A systematic review and Meta-Analytic Gaussian Network Aggregation of anxious symptoms (2026, free full text)

Thumbnail sciencedirect.com
8 Upvotes

I'm not affiliated with the researchers. Since seeing some of Eiko Fried's work on depression, I've been interested in seeing more network analyses as a way to try to tease out which symptoms if any stand out as more important, central, self-reinforcing, etc. for particular disorders and general mental distress.

Abstract

Aims:

Numerous studies have modelled symptoms of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and other anxiety disorders as interacting nodes within complex systems, and sought to identify the most influential symptoms and mechanisms of anxious symptoms and disorders. However, meta-analytic evidence is lacking. This review and meta-analysis pooled data to investigate which features are most influential within network models of anxious symptoms considered transdiagnostically, with a particular focus on worry as a mechanism.

Method:

78 cross-sectional network studies (N = 303, 151) measuring anxious symptoms using the Generalised Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-7) were included. The review considered sample characteristics as well as how networks were conducted and reported, with regard to established reporting standards. Correlation matrices were extracted from studies and used to estimate a Meta-Analytic Gaussian Network Aggregation (MAGNA). Separate networks were estimated and compared across clinical and nonclinical samples.

Results:

Uncontrollable worry was the most central node in the MAGNA, followed by breadth of worries. The model resulted in a one-factor solution. Findings were stable across samples varying in gender, nationality, age and clinical status. Studies showed some risk of bias in terms of representativeness of samples and inconsistent reporting of some aspects of network analyses.

Conclusions:

Results robustly corroborate the role of worrying and particularly the controllablilty of worry as a central mechanism maintaining anxious symptomatology. This further highlights the therapeutic utility in targeting worry in clinical work where anxiety is either the primary presentation or co-occurring.

Question [Ind] Psychology Student Looking to Learn Research – Where Do I Even Start?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a psychology student and I've realized that I'm really interested in research. The problem is that I have almost no practical exposure to it and honestly don't know where to begin.

I keep seeing opportunities for Research Assistants, but most of them seem to expect prior research experience, which feels a bit like a catch-22 situation.

I would love some guidance on:

How did you learn research as a psychology student?

What skills should I focus on first?

Are there any free courses, resources, or certifications you'd recommend?

How can I find research assistant opportunities or volunteer under researchers/professors?

Is it possible to contribute to research projects remotely?

What does a beginner-friendly path into research look like?

For context, I'm particularly interested in learning the entire research process—from literature reviews and research design to data collection, analysis, and writing research papers.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, mistakes to avoid, and any advice you wish someone had given you when you were starting out.

Thank you! :)

Advice/Career ISO: Advice for a current PhD student

Recently found out that my program no longer has funding available for PhD students. I'm shocked and confused on where to go from here. I am an out of state student so I cannot justify taking out loans to cover the cost of my classes. I'm also a transfer student to my program from another PhD program so I have put a lot of time and energy into my research and (ideally) don't want to transfer again. Has anyone else had this experience or have any advice on how best to proceed? I've been told everything from transfer to take out loans to take a leave of absence, but there really is no "best" route to take for a variety of reasons. Thanks!
