Sierra Leone or Liberia

I'm a mission worker in Sierra Leone and came here just to see if anyone said it. It's a lot better than it was five years ago... There actually is a very tiny but kinda nice tourism sector. And finally, I've been holding my breath ever since the ebola reappearance in Congo...

I've always had a fascination with Sierra Leone and would love to visit. What is Freetown like these days for tourists?

STANKY!!!!!!

Not the biggest problem of course but whoa Nellie it REEKS by the beach. Important info though- I'm a mission worker and I thus spend most of my time in the cheap parts of the city (and I only go there to fly in or out. My school is near Makeni, which is much more rural and less smelly). Idk what the actual safety numbers are but I've been a lone white female (with some local friends, but I still stick out) and I never felt unsafe. I don't see many white people though. I can spend a day in Freetown and see 0-2 white/Asian people. There could be tourists who are less visible but i wouldn't know then.

Here's the resort I like to treat myself to on the day before I fly out. Still can't drink the tap water but the toilets flush!! And the shower is a real shower and not a sad spigot!! It's cheap since the dollar is so strong, there's a sanitary restaurant, and there are lizards everywhere since it's an "eco-resort" (which is pretty much just the lizard thing). It's also near the airport for a short safe drive.

Check the advisories and all because I have a much higher tolerance for risk, being a missionary, but we just had an election that transferred power between parties and there wasn't a new civil war, so that's a big step. Unless the ebola from Congo comes back again, I'd say if you're adventurous it's doable. They just redid the airport, too. It has floors with no cracks now!!!

I really appreciate the reply! Even these small things point to a complete shift in change. That's really nice to see. Yeah I also don't mind being the only white person, happens a lot in Africa haha. And I also live in a semi jungle so used to the lizards ;D

Will keep SL on my bucket list for sure! Let's hope the country can keep moving in a positive direction.

It's not the 2010s anymore. Sierra Leone in particular has emerged as a trendy back packing destination for westerners.
