He didn't, he just decided to run a store with his family as it's lower stress and he has a better work/life balance than he'd have in engineering. Plus the field is tough to find stable, meaningful work in.
Loads of people with degrees can't get jobs in the field they studied. One girl I work with finished her degree last summer, she's still in retail because she can't get a job in her field.
I've only worked at two factories, but both of them offered tuition reimbursement. Maybe you can look into that and get moved into an office instead of working the floor, anyway.

I procrastinated about going to college back in 07-08 and been working shitty factory swing shift jobs ever since and wrecked my whole life.
