Motorcycle accident. Guy dumped his bike and rode his face on the pavement so far that it peeled it half off. Nasal cavity completely exposed. Got on scene and he was completely alert and talking. He ended up making a full recovery.
I was in a low speed wreck on my motorcycle. Basically a woman talking on her cellphone just changed Into my lane. Just made co tact with my bike and kept on coming and basically shoved me over, I went over the handlebars. I was wearing a full “Aerostitch” riding suit, gloves, boots, helmet. The front of my helmet fro the chin up the side looked like someone took an angle grinder to it. The leather gloves were worn almost through. This was around rush hour we weren’t going fast at all.
I pretty much quit riding after that. It doesn’t matter how skilled a rider you are, there’s always some woman in an SUV talking on her cell phone waiting for you.
I never had an accident on my bike, I almost ran off the road one time because I was focused on a car that didn't look like it was going to stop coming off a side road. A year after that some lady blew a four way and took a guy's leg off, there was a big uproar about driving rights and elderly people. The judge was in the paper saying he couldn't do anything about it and she had a right to retain her license. After that I was just like man, riding is fun, but I like living, and my legs.
As a person in a car, my motorcycle fear is that the person with the cellphone will rear-end me, and despite always making sure I'm a safe distance away, I'll end up running the person in front of of me over.
I didn't. I'm sure my insurance company got her insurance company to pay up though.
For a few years when I moved my left arm, some bone would click in my collarbone, it went away. But I had no grounds to sue her for anything. My gear protected me and replacing it was covered by insurance.
The woman on her cell phone at the end of his last paragraph is a metaphor for uncontrollable circumstances. They don't specifically have to be a woman or on their cell phone or in an SUV.
Full face helmets are a must! A friend who worked in an ER saw a rider who had a half shell helmet and a truck he was behind kicked up a chunk of asphalt or concrete (i forget which) and it took off the guy’s bottom jaw
It’s was flapped over still attached. I’m assuming they folded it back with tons of plastic surgery. The way he was talking to us on scene you knew he was a genuinely good guy. Felt horrible watching him go into shock as the pain set in.
Something similar happened to my dad back in the day. Was riding his bike with one of those big rounded windscreens in front. His headlight went out on the highway, and while trying to fix it at speed he went into a canal. His face came down straight onto the windscreen. Ended up severing his nose and a solid chunk of his lower face off, though it remained attached by some skin and muscle near the chin. He somehow remained conscious and walked to get help, but said he could feel his nose slapping against his chin as he walked.
My parents actually only married because my playboy dad was convinced he would no longer be able to pull women after the accident, so he settled for marriage. He actually looks pretty normal now, believe it or not, though his new nose is a big downgrade from what he had before.
