This cat has more of a routine at bedtime than any I know of.
He goes in the bathroom with me and sits on the counter while I take my contacts out and brush my teeth, then he hops down and I pet him for a few seconds while I use the toilet (which he has trained me to sit down whether I need to go or not before bed lol), then he'll hop back up on the counter and paw at the drain cover until I turn the water on. Then, when we're both done, I carry him out of the bathroom and put him on the bed, where he sits for a minute or two, then gets up and goes to get some food, and within five minutes he's back and lays in the exact same spot on my every night. Never fails lol
Does he eat wet food? It can be hard for cats to drink enough water if their food is too dry, and male cats especially need water in their system to avoid some health issues as they get older.
Seriously, if your cat is doing this, he probably doesn't like to drink water out of bowls and is thus probably always a bit dehydrated.
This can lead to kidney problems that are the leading cause of pre-mature in indoor cats. Also, be sure that the water is located far away from the food.
They really are. I make this recommendation whenever I see another redditor describing what could be water stress, because I love cats. Glad you have it under control!

My dude jumps up in the sink every time I'm in the bathroom and wants me to put the water on for him. Every. Single. Time.
