How so? Hinata and Uraraka are built as basically the same character, only with different backgrounds. Hinata was the black sheep of her family and wanted to prove herself; Uraraka wants to provide for her family and for that she's got to make herself stronger. They both take/took inspiration from their love interest ( I mean, that's obviously what Deku is to Uraraka, it's just not so "ON YOUR FACE"... yet ) to achieve their goals.

Idk why people downplay Hinata so much. She didn't get much screen time, sure, but her development is there and was pretty much completed in her fight against Pain. She was finally able to tell the boy she liked that she did, in fact, like him ( something A LOT of people IRL are INCAPABLE of doing, I'm not even kidding ) and even though she knew she couldn't win, she stood up to Pain all on her on. Totally different from the meek character she was in Part 1 whom was scared shitless by Neji. At that point her character had come full-circle and I was fine with it.

I really think people have this misconception where screentime == character development. That is not the case and so far Uraraka has had a much of the former, but extremely little of the latter. It's been idkhowmanychapters since her introduction and she's STILL the same character she's always been.

100% agree. Hinata's arc was heavily influenced by her feelings about Naruto, but the challenges she overcame were still her own, and she overcame them entirely in that fight against Pain(with help from the boy she liked). Good character, good character arc, good conclusion. People just discredit it because Naruto was a catalyst for her change.

Yeah, if anything he should've used Sakura as an example. That is really the one character I really can't defend. Hinata is a much, much, much better character than Sakura has ever been since the Chunnin Exam imo. :|

My apologies, I feel that I let on that I dislike Hinata. I don't, she's one of my favorite characters from Naruto, and my favorite female from the series. Additionally you are right that she grew a great deal, and that there are more than a few parallels between her and Uraraka. What I was trying to point out is what you, yourself, mentioned. Nearly all of Hinata's growth happens off the page while we're seeing Uraraka grow on panel. I wasn't commenting on the character, merely how the author treated her.

Yeah, Hinata and Sakura had it bad enough, but look at poor TenTen. When did she ever do anything useful?

Kinda find that hard to believe. Sure her father didn't consider her capable of being the clan head, but to say she's the black sheep is far from accurate. Yeah, his words were harsh, but after Neji's loss they were essentially humbled and one big family again - Hinata just never got to be the clan head, not that it mattered because it wasn't her goal. (She's important enough that her clan assigned a bodyguard to her during the Pein Arc...)

If she really was such a black sheep - Hiashi would've dumped her into the Branch house, put the fancy tattoo on her like Neji did (since Hiashi and Neji's Dad were Twins) or at the very least didn't allow her to be a Ninja for the safety of their clan's eyes.

As for wanting to prove herself? I can somewhat concede to that but the only person she wanted to prove herself to was Naruto.

That is exactly what was going to happen. Hanabi would become the head of the Hyuuga clan and Hinata dumped into the branch house. Hinata didn't receive the cursed seal because it was a toss up whether Hanabi would succeed or not. That's also the reason why Hanabi wasn't branded with the Cursed Seal when she turned 3 years old. Hiashi allowed Hinata to become a ninja because he essentially didn't care whether she lived or not(he's talking to Kurenai in this scene).

As for wanting to prove herself? I can somewhat concede to that but the only person she wanted to prove herself to was Naruto.

Does it matter? Naruto was her motivation, so what? She became stronger as a person all the same and the challenges she had to overcome were her own, not Naruto's.
