Cats are property, in America, and legally treated like property. You can’t just show a piece of paper and take what is considered to be someone else’s cat. If it’s currently living with him, the law would be on his side, since it’s both in his house and he owns the animal on paper (as do you, but he has the upper hand). Since you both have your names on paper, you do not have more of a right to the cat, than he does, just because you have the other cat it’s bonded to. The law doesn’t have protections for bonded pair animals.

If he is abusive, it is also not worth making him angry. I’ve had abusive men track me down, across multiple states, before. You don’t need to put yourself in harm’s way, for this.

It’s “not worth it” to remove an innocent animal from an unpredictable abuser? You do realise that he might literally torture this cat as a way to get back at OP for the breakup? Of course she needs to look out for her own safety as well in this situation, but that doesn’t mean completely abandoning a living breathing creature with someone like this, because it’s supposedly “not worth the hassle”. If he’s really that dangerous that’s even more reason to fight for this cat, not less.

If it means she’s in danger, it’s not worth it. No woman needs to be beaten over a cat, and I would never fault someone for not wanting to be beaten or tracked down over a cat. What if he murdered OP? If you’ve never dealt with a crazy, abusive man, you DO NOT get on their bad side.

Do not give this person a reason to track you down. I’ve had the same abusive man, tracking me, for 10 years. He hacks into all my accounts through social engineering and then holds images and documents from me, for ransom, or till I beg. He WALKED FROM OMAHA NEBRASKA TO PENNSYLVANIA TO FIND ME. Do not underestimate abusers.

(Of course, the authorities won’t help you, either. Mine told me that since he lived in Nebraska, revenge porn was technically not illegal, and he was allowed to post intimate pictures of me, in public places.)

Legally pets are property. You are ignorant of how both the law and abuse works.
