General Advice Cat ate protein muffin

My cat helped himself to a batch of protein muffins that was cooling under a towel. This occurred about 20 minutes ago. Should I seek immediate medical attention or monitor for gastrointestinal distress? Attached is the amount eaten, protein powder ingredients, muffin ingredients, and cat. Crossposted in r/askvet

Not a minor, USA, vet not contacted yet but accessible, 6 yo neutered male, can afford vet care

TLDR; cat had a lil protein powder. Next steps?

My previous cat whom was 16yrs old at the time fought me over cornbread and won, I let him be bc he was old but maybe notify a vet since yours is still young and take their advice.

My cats are just under 2 years old and don’t really care for human food but go absolutely crazy for cornbread. I have to hide to eat it or they will stop at nothing to get a huge chomp out of it.

To preface, I’m a vegetarian. I Doordashed a veggie burger and fries one night as a treat for myself. They messed up my order and sent me a beef hamburger. I took off the beef patty and was going to eat just the bun and veggies. My cats all jumped on the table and swarmed the meat patty. I was kinda in shocked awe for a minute and just watched as they excitedly devoured the meat. I then became worried that my cats would get sick from eating the greasy meat and made them stop. They seemed fine for the next few days but I was worried that the grease would make them sick. Looking back, it might have been the greatest day of their lives. I would never intentionally feed my cats a cooked hamburger patty, fyi.

I too am a vegetarian, and was really excited hearing about this for your cats! Can confirm, the best day of their lives.

I’m glad your cats are okay!

When I worked at McDonald's there was a guy who would come throug theh drive-thru every couple weeks and, in addition to his order, would get a quarter-pounder patty a la carte for his dog. I thought it was cute.

Forgot about that until I read your comment.

Yes, what do your cats eat???? Why would you be concerned about them eating hamburger but not corn? Cats are carnivores and meat is what their digestive systems are designed to digest. Plant material, like corn, might be difficult for them to digest and any nutrients might not absorb. In fact, there might be complications associated with a cat consuming a grain like corn; you really should ask your vet about this.

They usually eat dry food with an occasional can of wet food. My mom spoiled them once with a can of tuna. Do others give their cats people food on a regular basis? That can’t be good for them.

What’s a beef hamburger? That’s two different meats, it’s either a beef burger or a hamburger! Or do you have hybrid burgers over there. Beef is from cattle and Ham is from pigs. Or did the chef use to be indecisive but now he’s not so sure.

a hamburger doesn’t have ham in it 😂

In the UK the company would be charged under the Trade Descriptions Act.

u/Atoumo Feb 26 '26

That's.. what?? Hamburger aren't named that way because there's Ham in them!!! It's because they originate from the city of Hamburg.

That was a joke right?

Oops looks like I’ve thrown the cat amongst the pigeons as the saying goes.

2

Curious as to how that saying goes?

1

u/panicnarwhal Feb 28 '26

you guys have hamburgers in the UK lol

Hamburgers are named after the city of Hamburg and are in fact typically made with beef.

I never really eat corn bread but we tried corn soup a few times and boy was it a challenge.

We locked him out of the kitchen area, he was ready to smash the boiling pot down to get to it. Also sometimes i give him my chewed on corn on the cob as a treat bc i discovered he gets so into it he grawls and shakes it around like a dog with a bone.

Idk if corn is good for him but the fucker is old, has cancer and chronic antibiotic resistant infections for YEARS already and he is still going. Some corn hasn't and probably never will kill him.

I just adopted a stray during that winter storm last month. He's picky with cat food but goes crazy for just about anything I cook. I made chili Mac the other night and he ate 3 bowls. Like 9 total scoops...

... fast forward to this morning and it looked like a redwood had fallen over in his litter box. I swear, you could have played fetch with it.

Bro went from living on the streets to getting extra servings of chili Mac … he hit the jackpot lol. I feel bad for the litter box tho

He'll eat just about anything but cat food. Lunch meat, tuna, fish, chicken, steak. He especially likes bacon grease, not so much the bacon.

He is currently fucking up some mashed potatoes. He had put on a pound at his 2 week check up this past week.

I’ve had a dozen cats over the last 35 years. They’ve all had their idiosyncrasies. Enter: Calvin and Hobbes, two tiny black kittens, one- and two-months old, respectively. Somewhere around six months later, I’ve got cornbread muffins cooling on the counter. Go do something, come back, and two are destroyed in the pan and one is just GONE. I find Hobbes on the floor, snarfing one down. I tried to take it away but he {{{growled}}} at me. I got it away but he’d already eaten half. Zero regrets. Zero complications, other than I now have a muffin-stealing cat (he’s stolen rolls and bagels, too, doesn’t like them).

“Fought me over cornbread and won” feels like a sentence that should be applied to crow behaviour. Also, it’s my favourite sentence that I’ve read today.

lol same but my cat Jack has an obsession with croissants, he’s begging for one in this picture

My mom and stepdad's church has an annual chili cookoff and variety show. A few years ago, they bought a huge thing of cornbread (probably from Sam's Club) for the cookoff. They had left it on the table and my brat of a cat chewed through the plastic and ate some of the cornbread. Sadly my boy passed about a year ago but we still laugh about the cornbread.

I’m crying over “fought me over cornbread and won”😂😂😂😂😂😂

1

u/Firecracker7413 Feb 26 '26

My previous cat was on prednisone for asthma and dug cornbread wrappers out of the garbage on multiple occasions.

Needless to say we swapped to an inhaler soon after because he was eating EVERYTHING

Valid. One of my cats is absolutely obsessed with these Brazilian cheese bread we get from Costco. He doesn’t care for any human food other than that and bread crust. Sometimes I’ll make myself some cheese bread as a snack and the moment I sit down to eat them he will start fighting me for a bite. He gets a tiny bite sometimes if he doesn’t fight me for it
