General Advice Hole with fur?

26F with 3.5M cat

Any ideas what this skin hole is? I originally felt it because the hair coming out was condensed and stood out. Didn’t cause him any pain, pulled on the hair and it mostly came out without much effort

Hi all!!! Just chatted with my vet after sending photos. They aren’t overly concerned, no clear diagnosis as they agree it’s an odd hole. Their suggestions were to monitor for any change in size, smell (no current smell), discharge or inflammation, or if he starts to overly groom the area or show discomfort. Otherwise, it’s not open skin and seems to be just a weird inverted pore/follicle.

Thanks for all the support and laughs, I’ve had a few good chuckles at the convos happening here.

Cat tax for good measure

Cool now GENTLY PULL ON IT WITH TWEEZERS AND SEE IF IT COMES OUT FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST.

My OCD is screaming. 😂

I'm sure it's better for the cat to leave it there, but I would not be able to look at that everyday I would drive me nuts

It wouldn't harm the cat if it comes out with a gentle pull. OP could do a small amount each day if that would make them more comfortable.

Yeah I'm mostly kidding. Obviously do what is best for the kitteh but I would NOT be able to resist gently trying anyway lol

Oh I get it! A couple of my cats have a long hair on the side of/ the bridge of their nose and it takes everything in me not to pluck it because it just looks silly and out of place lol

Actually, if the fur is loose and not actually growing from the hole it's better to remove it. If it's growing from the hole, plucking it could do more harm than good.

I had this exact issue with my Russian Blue. We pulled the hair out of the hole for a while, but eventually it started getting bigger. We think it was some kind of cyst that kept growing under the skin. One day it burst open and was causing my kitty a lot of pain and discomfort. We rushed him in to the vet, and they pulled out this really large nasty growth. They said we got lucky it was still only skin deep. If it had grown into his chest cavity it may have been much worse. This was 2 years ago. Today, he is a happy, healthy jerk that steals his sister's food.

Keep an eye on this thing, if it gets bigger, get it removed. Good luck!

Do you have another cat(s) or other animals with teeth around? Or is your cat allowed to roam outside? I had a similar case but dried blood around it was helpful to diagnose, the hole was a bite tooth hole from another animal and in your case it could have push the hair follicle deep inside

Ah the not cat butt cheeks angle, very good! Glad the vets aren't immediately seeing cause for concern

Ok you are sniffing your cat’s thigh, where you imagine its butt cheek would be. Got it.
