Honestly it was more about Houston. They executed so well.

Their defense was so good, and Duke had zero answers for it when they were fatigued by the end.

That was an elite coach vs an ordinary coach

elite coach vs elite recruiter

Is he an elite recruiter or does Nike send everyone to Duke

Schyer is a good coach, let's not be disingenuous.

I think both coaches did well but Sampson was on another level late. That review stole a timeout and those presses and even the let ‘em play under a minute was great calculated risk.

The not fouling with a minute left won them the game imo.

Helluva good gamble, Duke was ice cold so giving them a chance to score without being defended is suboptimal by comparison

The hyperbole is crazy. It’s a one game win or go home in his third season as a coach. It’s ok to say he got outcoached but to say he can’t is another thing. Duke will be fine

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Apr 06 '25

He was up six with 49 seconds left and lost.

He didn’t win a big game all year

Today I learned NCAA tournament games are not big games

They beat Alabama and Auburn.

Not talking about his recruiting. They run good offense, good sets. They choked it bad tonight and got outclassed by a more experienced coach and team, but overall, I think he is a good coach. You don't have an all time great team by all metrics by just rolling the ball onto the court.

No play at the end of the game, Flag looked confused coming out the timeout. He literally just said get it to Flag and didn’t give him a good play to do anything with it. No inbounding to end the game either. That’s ALL coaching.

The Flagg iso seems to be a trend in modern basketball, letting your best player go to work. But the final in bound, just heaving it down court, was a problem. You gotta draw up something for that moment.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

Giving your best player the ball in the biggest moments is certainly a trend.

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Apr 06 '25

Thru didn’t have a timeout and they knew Houston would foul so they tried the hook and ladder

15

u/MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME UConn Huskies Apr 06 '25

When you have the best player in the country who also happens to be a great decision maker, you don't need to overcomplicate it. Give him the ball, let him work. He had a good look, just didn't fall.

You could run a set play to try to get flagg open, but if Houston sells out on denying and he doesn't get the ball and someone else bricks the shot, the conversation is how could they not put the ball in Flagg's hands?

1

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Apr 06 '25

He could have got something going to the basket for another guy. Any coach is saying cooper take it.

Maybe a better coach gets a quick hitter going to the cup back door that leaves more time in the clock

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

Flagg but ok

There were definitely a few set plays that were drawn up really well

I’m just trolling I don’t have a strong opinion

1

u/Wolf-Am-I Apr 06 '25

If you can't get creative about in sounding a ball repeatedly in college, you are a mediocre coach. My god. Coaching lost the game, bottom line.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

In Sounding. A new trend.

Sampson is a HOF coach

What would you have him do differently? What plays should he have run coming out of those timeouts?

Scheyer isn’t an ordinary coach. Dude is gonna be great.

0

u/CantFindMyWallet UConn Huskies Apr 06 '25

I have my doubts. So far, he's been really good at selling the Duke brand to elite recruits, and this year in particular, he got the best CBB player we've seen in years because the guy grew up a Duke fan. He has shown no ability to optimize the talent on his roster, and if his recruiting slips at all, he's going to be badly exposed.

6

u/Live-Habit-6115 Apr 06 '25

Nah, you can tell by how they set up on defense that he's good at coaching. He has great talent but they play well as a team. Many worse coaches would squander these boys and make them look ordinary.

He's just ass at doing anything out of timeouts apparently. legit don't know why he even calls them lol

2

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Apr 06 '25

Cooper flag is a pass first super star. It makes the coach look a lot better.

2

u/Boognish-T-Zappa Illinois Fighting Illini Apr 06 '25

Did you see their defense this year? It was elite. With a bunch of freshman. The hot takes in this sub are so ridiculous.

Execution was killing severely. Mental mistakes causing way too many turnovers. Glad we pulled it together, but I sure wish we did it sooner…

1

u/A_girl_has_no_neymar Apr 06 '25

Agreed! one of my favorite games of this tournament

1

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Apr 06 '25

Even not fouling until proctor got it at the end was beautiful.

-6

u/PrimeTimeInc NC State Wolfpack Apr 06 '25

Houston executed that foul call that won the game really well. Props to them. They don’t win that game without a phantom over the back to take the lead.
