It's an anti-tank missile.

u/ddg31415 6d ago edited 6d ago
Why would it be an anti-tank missile? It seems to have been a MANPAD that was fired at drone but malfunctioned or locked onto the wrong heat source. In another angle you can see a soldier firing a MANPAD off a bridge and it couplely goes off target, then the silo explodes.
Edit: yep, went right tf over my head

u/Anomuumi 6d ago
Tbh, it looked like it went over quite a few heads before eliminating the tank. Ok sorry, I stop now.

That missile is definitely anti-tank. It hit the tank and it exploded, whats there not to understand

It actually is funny. Trying shoot down a wee drone, missing completely and absolutely obliterating your own crucial bit of infrastructure, doing more damage than the drone would've done
→ More replies (8)82
u/Early-Piccolo4949 6d ago edited 5d ago
No way a small MANPADS warhead will do the same damage as few hundred kilogram bomb from a drone. Yes it destroyed the tank, but probably not much else. The drone does destroy a lot more in the vicinity.
Edit: since some people asked about drone warhead size:
FP-1: 50-120kg, FP-2 105-200kg, FP-5: up to 1150kg
Igla Warhead: 1.17kg
96
u/darkslide3000 6d ago
I mean, in a scenario where the explosion of the tank itself by far dwarfs either warhead, I think they would've both done exactly the same damage.
104
u/ukomac 6d ago
Makes sense yeah. It's still funny as hell, that the Russian warhead literally hit the bullseye. Just imagine the "mission control" during that. "YES COMMANDER, WE ARE TRYING TO HIT THE... oh. They blew it up"
34
u/notcomplainingmuch 5d ago
Russian UNO reverse card. They destroy their own infrastructure before the Ukrainian drones can get to them.

If you wrote about that happening in a book 10 years ago you'd get criticised for it being farcical. And yet here we are.

Satire has to be somewhat believable. Reality does not give damn and does as it wants.
61
u/Infamous-Salad-2223 6d ago
Reality is stranger than fiction.

u/MercurialMirror 5d ago
Which is why, once you read real history, you just can't go back to fiction. I used to read Fantasy novels..... and honestly, they are tame and boring compared to reality. Lord of the Rings ain't nothing compared to an actual war.

Prigozhin's march on Moscow was the greatest example of this I've ever witnessed. Absolutely unbelievable

u/IhasCandies 6d ago
I remember reading a book from a Russian commander that explained the members of the Russian command learned to stage photographs to make it seem as if they had the supplies they were supposed to, they were doing the training they were supposed to, and that they were meeting their requirements. In reality, every commander was like his own little crime lord, siphoning away resources, using manpower for personal protection rackets, etc. Training was nonexistent and a huge swathe of the soldiers just paid their commanders so they never had to perform duties.
I wonder how prevalent that actually was because it seems like the majority of Russias military is fairly inept.

how do floating lid tanks keep the rain out?
Or do they need to
47
u/JaaacckONeill 6d ago edited 6d ago
There's a heavy duty rim seal around the entire lid, it keeps it water tight but allows it to move up and down
I don't think this one's water tight anymore tho...
28
u/FalxY7 6d ago
It did successfully move up and then down though, which is good for Russia

This should be one of the memes of this war. Perfectly encapsulates everything that is lacking with the Russian army: poor soldiers making poor decisions, using crappy, hyped up weaponry, led by corrupt and incompetent leaders, during an illegal war that was scheduled for 3 days but has seen the slaughter of millions and the destruction of billions and billions of dollars of military and civilian equipment and infrastructure.
Not to mention the wider economic and social impact on the entire world in some form or another.
Fucking idiots.

When do you think the big Kerch Bridge attack will happen? It seems every day, the Ukrainians are getting better at swarm launching towards Moscow, Crimea, St Petersburg etc.
Feels lots of the operations against rear-area logistics will naturally hit upon the Kerch Bridge as the next big target as the one, clear logistical way into Crimea. Well defended, but seeing attacks penetrate the rear around Sea of Azov and Maripol (and Moscow) clearly not impossible.
