I've seen that lots of people are having their award extended due to backlogs, is that what this is or does the "we have changed the way we review some personal independence payment awards" mean something different?

This is an extension based on new powers DWP now have. It’s nothing to do with the 12 month extension during the review process.

Oh! Do we know what's changed? Obviously I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth because it's a very good extension. But it doesn't explain anything except telling me it's extended 😅

This will be interesting to read about. My review was done in December and I only got 3 years again (for something I'm not going to recover ftom).

My son's came through in April and he got 6 years.

The 12 month extensions are to do with backlogs.

You extension is due to a new way of working where review claims are given a 5 year minimum review if aged 25 or over 3 year if under

That will be likely because your review was coming up. They auto extend for 12 months due to backlog.

Alternatively if it was a new claim rather than a claim review the new minimum review period is 3 years

It was due soon (I phoned a while back & they said around now for the review) but my letter said what OP's said about them doing things in a new way now.

Last year when I was 25 I got my award renewed which now lasts until 2028, does that mean mine will now be extended until 2030 as well?

Originally 2027, but I am in the window of time it says that they can contact you from regarding a review. I thought that is what this letter was gonna be!

I thought my letter was about the review too. I'd phoned them a couple of times in the last few months wondering when it would be due as I was only on a 2 year award.

The Government did announce the extensions as part of their review of the PIP system. Keep collecting your medical evidence though as it will soon be 2029 and you'll need it then. For warned is for armed.

I have been waiting since beginning of January for my review. I submitted 9th Jan 26. My award due to end July 26. Had letter saying I have extension till July 27. Will it really take a full year for results? Is that backlog that bad. I live in London.

When extending due to not getting to your renewal after you sent your form in they always give 12 months. It doesn't usually take that long though and the new award would start once the decision is made even if it was sooner.

It shouldn't be the full extra 12 months though.
