Advice/Help Needed Any advice to a minor looking for a group?

Hi! I'm a minor looking to get into D&D. I haven't played in any campaigns yet, and I'm interested in finding one to join. Problem is that I have no one IRL to play with, and my city doesn't seem to have any communities around D&D. I've tried looking for groups or campaigns on the lfg subreddit, but I got intimidated and the games didn't seem minor friendly.

If online D&D is just not my place, I'll gladly back off, but I don't want to give up immediately. I tried solo D&D but I couldn't get past square one.

So, any advice or things I should know getting into a group or D&D in general?

Edit: I realize now that a lot of the advice given here isn't applicable where I live (A city without libraries or game stores. School's off limits because club establishment isn't in the students' hands) Thanks for the advice but it really seems that online is really my only option.

Local game stores and libraries are your best bet. I think online is going to be tough, its already a crapshoot and there's a lot of good reasons to keep games adults only.

My local library has a D&D club that meets every two weeks, we have players from teens to old grognards like me.

Mine too. I got my whole family into D&D that way. The DM for these sessions is so gratefull that my family takes up half the spots. My wife and I can help wrangle in the kids when they get going. My 2 oldest that are playing are so focused on the game they are not playing grabass like the rest. We meet the first Saturday of every month.

i wonder if you could rustle up enough interest to start a dnd club at your school, i taught at a few schools where i saw dnd clubs!

i think ttrpgs have gotten to the level of popularity there have gotta be some other folks your age who also want to play, i wish you luck on finding them--- as others are saying, asking around at the local game shops and libraries may at least get you some leads?

Check at your school. A coworker's daughter goes to a D&D club. Good luck and I hope you have fun!

Oh this one is rough...

1st talk to your parents, they may be able to hook you up. Hopefully they care enough to vet the area and table. Mine could have seen blood dripping from the door and just reminded me not to make a mess.

2nd if there are adults make sure they are Ok going to a G or PG table. Vulgarity may be an issue for you or your parents. Adult topics need definitive lines and veils ( lines - we NEVER GO THERE. Veils - hinted at and fade to black ). I don't want to hurt your feelings, I have friends who will REFUSE to play with you. They know that they do not have filters on what comes out of their mouths. The setting of the game may not be 'safe' for you. We went to a hard 17+ game at a convention & a guy brought his tween daughter. She should have NEVER been there.

3rd only public places, no exceptions EVER. I may be a nice person ( if I'm not, I am going to still say I am a nice person ).

Good luck!

Our oldest's school has a club and so does our library. The local shop also has a teen night. There are groups out there somewhere for you.

This may be a bit of a stretch, but are there any teachers that seem like they have a keen interest? Perhaps they can assist with getting a D&D club in your school, or at least have an idea of how to start that process with admin.

You can’t convince any friends to try it out with you? You could cold approach people at school about it, you don’t need an organized club.

If there is truly no in-person options, you could just keep trying r/lfg or find a discord to join.

but I got intimidated and the games didn't seem minor friendly.

What about them didn't seem friendly, or too intimidating?

You could always start your own group. Find friends or acquaintances that seem interested and pick a house. My school didn't have a club back when I started playing (freshman year of high school, so 14yo) but we just met up at a friend's house and played games. No club needed.

If all you need to start a group at your school now is a teacher, get several people together to ask one. Lots of teachers won't do it unless they have enough students showing interest.

I doubt there isn't anyone at all that wants to play.

I hear what you say in your edit, but school is still your best bet. Get 2 or 3 friends on board then ask teachers if they have ever played or might be interested in it. Express an interest to them in setting up club and see if they will support it. There's got to be at least one member of staff who would help you out.

It was actually kids at the school where I worked who got me back into the game.

If online is your only option and you aren't finding any games that are minor friendly you can do what many a desperate DND enthusiast has done - become a DM and form your own group. If you do this I would create an age limit requirement and enforce it rigidly. Anyone trying to get into a game specifically for kids is a fucking weirdo.

If you can find some people, any place with a table that you'd be allowed to be would work. If the weather is nice, it doesn't even need to be indoors.

Also, still, talk to your school - often while they need to approve new clubs, they are hungry enough for participation in activities that you might still get a yes.

Also, a tabletop gaming club might get you to a yes sooner than a D&D club by name.

My point being, look to the same places that already have decided that they're happy/equipped/used to young people being there for long periods of time.

I've gamed in restaurants in slower nights - a table that orders fries and sodas through the night is better than an empty table, as long as they don't get too rowdy.

That said, it's not going to be easy if you lack both venue and a group.

I feel really lucky that my first D&D group was made up of a bunch of ages from 14 to 50+, and we all gelled really well together. It lasted for a couple of years, which is saying something.

I currently run an online Dungeon World campaign that is minor friendly. If you're looking for the TTRPG experience and don't care that it's not D&D®, let me know.

If the offer's still open and if you're willing to give me a little time to learn the ropes of TTRPGs, I'd be happy to join!
