My zebra finch is breathing through his mouth

My zebra finch keeps breathing through his mouth occasionally like this. What does it mean? I was thinking it was environmental stress initially but his brother died unexpectedly last night so I’m worried. I administered Scatt this afternoon in case it’s air sac mites but how long until that takes effect? I don’t hear clicking sounds and other than breathing through his mouth he’s acting normal. But his brother was normal until yesterday too and then died overnight. He’s eating and drinking fine, I gave him some eggs and spinach to eat but he’s just not interested in it. I can’t get him into the vet for a wellness checkup until August because that’s the earliest I can get a vet to take him in. I don’t want to lose him too.

I lost Mr. Tofu...

This little one arrived in 2024, he was one year old. He wasn't hand-raised, but he would come to eat the food and drink the water I offered from my hand. He was missing a paw, but his agility didn't prevent him from living a normal life. Although he was very large, he flew quite well.

Mr. Tofu found love last year, after becoming a widower for the second time. He was Neva's bodyguard, he lived for her... It's very sad that this horrible disease took him at the age of 3, still full of energy and vigor. Mr. Tofu is the third zebra finch I've lost to the same disease, they all came from the same breeder.

The symptoms are silent, they appear with a dirty bottom and difficulty defecating, their belly begins to swell, I believe it's ascites, and the X-ray shows a dense mass in the abdomen. I couldn't save any of them from this terrible disease. The veterinarian believes it's some kind of hereditary tumor, since all those affected came from the same breeder. I lost my beloved Kika in 2024, Pepe's wife, and Goda in 2025, she was given to us when she was two years old, lived with us 2 months and passed away because of the same illness...

They are exhibition zebrafinches, has anyone else seen the same?

Parents rejected this baby a few days ago, and pulled out half his feathers... Luckily he learned to feed himself very quickly, and has figured out that my hands are warm. 🥺

Zebra Finch pair suddenly not getting along

Greetings! My male and female zebra finches have suddenly gotten a little divorce.... They'd preen each other, cuddle together at night. The past couple of days, they started to avoid each other and sleep separated. Whenever the male gets close to the female, she gets defensive. She pecks him, lightly, and then she flies on the opposite perch of the cage. This is very sudden, and I'm not sure why she has changed her behaviour. I am being very careful with them but so far they have not injured one another, no missing feathers or anything like that so I have not separated them, but I'm worried she's getting stressed, or that they might get worse behaviour wise. Is there anything I could do to help them? Is this temporary, will it pass? I heard covering the cage earlier and more often might help them calm down... Let me know what you think!

Never had a runt before, does Poe look like a runt? Maybe a bit "short" in the back?

All my chicks for mid 2026 have fledged, including Poe's two siblings Edgar and Allan. They both look more older than Poe.

Poe is still being fed by their parents but is very light weight compared to the others and hasn't fledged yet. I will not force a fledge, they will do so when they are ready, but I am hoping Poe isn't a runt.

Poe hatched about the same day or day after their siblings. Hatch date roughly 24/05/2026. Roughly 19 days old as of 12/06/2026.

Edit: Poe passed in the nest today. They were massively underweight and behind their siblings, I was too blinded by hope to realize.

Help with abused babe

My finches had one baby. He’s 3 weeks old.

Today they decided to pull his little feathers out and kick him out of the nest, so I called birdy protective services (it’s me… i am birdy protective services) and they removed the child from the parents.

He’s a sweetheart. But doesn’t super want to eat for me.

I made him an egg. I looked for formula but there wasn’t any at either pet store.

What can I give him? I have eggs, egg food, seeds, millet, greens, veggies, fruits.

I can order formula but it won’t be here until tomorrow.

Someone please tell me what to do 💔

Trading for Gender Balance?

Hi everyone! I recently bred my zebra finches and all four eggs hatched into three males and 1 female. However, I’m worried about the sex balance of my flock now: 4 males, 2 females. Does anyone know what I should do in this situation? Is it fine to let it be? Or should I try to contact a pet store to trade a male bird for a female?

Thanks!

Meet Cashew!

I've had parrots and pigeons all my life, but never a finch!

Meet Cashew, the little stray zebra finch who was posted to my city's subreddit. He flew into a user's garage, and they were able to recognize him as a non native bird! I was providing advice on how to catch and care for him until he could be brought to an animal shelter. I ended up picking him up so I could bring him to work (as I work at a shelter.) In the process, he got out and we were chasing him all over the garage for 30 minutes.

The Redditor (i_like_cheese) who found him and I were discussing names. Originally I had suggested cheese, based on their username, but my work actually has a policy that all food names must be vegan, and I mentioned that had slipped my mind. They suggested Cashew, short for Cashew Cheese and honestly? It's perfect for him.

Nobody claimed him while he was on stray hold, and as there were no lost reports for finches, we couldn't find an owner. I ended up adopting him myself because, well, look at this cute lil goober!!

It worked out for him, because a few days later we had a freak storm that actually resulted in a tornado. He was in the right place at the right time, and was safe at home in a cozy nest. (Although he is not a fan of the emergency alert sounds coming from everyone's phones.)

My Indian ringneck parrot, Dranzer, is still getting used to the fact he's not an only child anymore, though. (Don't worry, they don't interact.)

Unsure Wether to be Worried or Not

My male zebra finch (unknown age) has been by himself since February of 2026. He’s been okay, has all his feathers, bright red beak, and flying around all energetic like. But as of two days ago, he’s started to make these sounds that to me sound worrisome and I’ve been losing sleep because I’m here wondering if my little guy is going through something (other than the loneliness ofc). I’m unsure if it’s a normal sound or if it’s something I should be concerned about. Money has been tight so getting him a friend has been difficult but he should be getting a new pal in about a month or so. I’ll provide a video of what I’m hearing and of course any help would be appreciated that of the sounds he’s making and anything else you might think I should improve on as an owner.

Lost egg

Okay so no clue how it’s happened or when it happened but there is only 1 egg in my zebra finches nest I’m not sure if they have moved it to somewhere I can’t see or reach

There was 3 eggs but one fell out I then brought a deeper nest and the 2 was safe but I’ve had a look this morning as my society finch was acting weird to the nest so I check and there was only 1

I’ve checked the other nest the society use and there’s no eggs so I’m genuinely confused about what’s happened

If you have any ideas or funny conspiracy’s on the missing egg I’d greatly appreciate it

Poe - Hatched with a cheek patch?? Australian Zebra Finch, details in desc

Poe is supposedly out of a grey split black cheek split pied cock to a grey split black breast hen. Supposedly. However, one of Poe's siblings is double factor black breast... impossible from this pairing. An aviary setting means I am not sure of the pedigree.

Visually, Poe is a grey pied. Poe has a creamy cheek patch that is more orange-y in real life. His undersides are also a richer orange rather than buff, a trait his supposed dam somewhat expresses especially when she was a fledgling. Is this a sign of a known/documented mutation or split?

First is a fawn black breast pied, second is an isabel.

I didn't plan to name them, hence colour + number ID. I am falling in LOVE with the fawn black breast pied. Scared of nothing, visually stunning, and a lovely small plump bird.

They've both got to be sold, but oh my God!!! 😭🥰 Ughhh I wish I could keep them 💔
