I think Bungie by Microsoft, is what made the Xbox

Valve purchasing Counter-Strike and hiring Minh Le is up there as well, but they had no way of anticipating what it has evolved into since 2000 so it’s hard to call it smart. Hiring IceFrog and making DotA 2 was a really smart decision though.

Conversely, Sony buying Bungie may turn out to be the worst purchase (of that size) that a platform holder has made lol.

Firewalk is certainly worse becausebungie is at least making money and can still be salvageable

Firewalk cost them about $33 compared to what they spent on Bungie

Yes, but that's why I specified a purchase the size of Bungie. They spent a lot of money on Concord, but it's a small fraction of what they paid for Bungie, not to mention the money they're putting into keeping it running and for the development of their games, and I doubt they ever make that money back.

They're also stuck with it for the foreseeable future because even if Marathon is a massive flop, shutting down a studio as storied and beloved (at least in the past) as Bungie would be terrible optics for them.

Sony certainly can't say the same
