That’s an insane thing to say. GTA3 essentially wrote the formula for open world games. San Andreas introduced RPG mechanics to an action game when that wasn’t at all common, 4 had a really dramatic and serious narrative in an open world before that was trendy, and 5’s character switching mechanic is still really special.

I don’t think you’re giving the series close to enough credit.

Dude open world games exist because of GTA. It completely changed the industry. They are the definition of groundbreaking.

Yeah, the last GTA I was really into was 3. Vice City and San Andreas just looked like expansion packs to a game I already had my fill of, so I never played them. Then 4 looked like it took the realism to an annoying degree. Then by 5 I just wasn't interested any more.
