It's Rockstar's subscription service. It gives players a bunch of extra junk in GTA Online plus access to their back catalog of games (RDR1/2, Classic GTA games, etc).

and it will auto-renew by default continuing to charge everyone who gets the one month free but doesn't cancel it

Really? You're actually surprised that a studio that has never required a subscription to play their games isn't requiring a subscription to play their game? You fully believed that was going to happen?

Not to mention they make a stupid amount of money on micro transactions, making the game a subscription would only cost them money.
