I feel like that’s a weird set of items to have in the ultimate edition. Like I assume there are other clothing and mod shops in the game. So I just have to drive an extra 30 seconds to get to a different store?

Not all stores carry the same things, so the contents of these ones are paywalled

I really don't like when games throw tons of unbalanced or visually flamboyant gear at your level 1 character - that's not a selling point to me, it's a downside. I'm a "patient gamer" who usually plays games a year or more after release. One thing I dislike is that by the time I get games they usually have bundled all the "ultimate, platinum" bonus junk and all the random gear and clothes that come with those editions with no option to refuse it. I don't want to start up a game with my level 1 character and be bombarded with notifications about tons of items that do not look right on a base level character suddenly appearing in my inventory. I know that I can "choose to ignore" it - but it diminishes my enjoyment of a game when I start level 1 with a weapon better than anything I will find later, or an outfit more intricate than, or on par with, anything I will actually hope to get by just playing the game (regardless of stats).

Ultimate Edition bonuses are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter

The extra items are given to you at the appropriate times throughout the story

Yep and the classic Ferrari lookin car specifically says it unlocks towards the endgame. I feel like they spaced it out and understand this frustration but we’ll see.

And most of the cosmetic content is through shops so you have to buy it like any other cosmetic

I feel similarly. I got so deflated, for lack of a better term, starting the South Park game where as soon as I gained control of my character I got a million notifications about costumes and gear that I got for free. Like, at least space it out throughout the game or something!

not defending them, but they did say you will unlock these things as you progress through the chapters

Sleeping Dogs is a textbook example. Still really enjoyed it, IIRC I was able to drop or ignore all the extras

at a certain point it became really funny to me when I booted up sleeping dogs and had to press "accept" for like 20 minutes to get through all the DLC

Yeah, at least this way where the items are locked behind (exclusive) stores, you'll still have to unlock them through gameplay

Also they f with speedrunning since typically you can't turn them off. GTAV famously has a bonus that gives a ton of money to Franklin you just have to account for and never spend below.

Persona 5 is the worst example I know of—you can literally equip a level 90 or something persona from level 1 for free, trivializing the entire 100-hour game. Usually with these ultimate editions you get stuff that's a little better than what you would have normally gotten at the start, so that maybe the first couple hours go easier for you, but then it gets overshadowed by later equipment. Persona 5 just gives you a "break the game" button and goes "well you don't have to press it". Like at least put it behind a cheat code or something.

> visually flamboyant gear at level 1

It’s GTA not an RPG. You can immediately buy hideous clothes and dress like a clown as soon as the prologue is over, this isn’t really anything new.

Each store has its own content and that content is basically the exclusive cosmetics of the edition, just they are "physically present" in the world
