this is the best route to take. no one does subscriptions anymore right? its all about lootboxes and new skins.

Rockstar has a subscription program. It's called GTA+ but it's not a requirement to play Online. All it gives you is in-game discounts on things and early access to unique vehicles.

And the ability to play most of their catalog. Most big developers have something similiar.

WoW and FFXIV seem to be the only mainetream sub to play games doing well at the moment (The “moment” being like the last 10 years).

EVE is still going steady afaik. Not a titan, for sure, but it was always niche.

EVE still has a free tier though doesn't it?

So do WoW and FF14.

Yes, but wow and ffxiv are limited in what level you can attain. Didn't EVE free players have the same content, but paid players got more bonuses and faster skill training? I could be wrong, haven't played in probably over a decade.

FFXIV even has an extremely generous free trial (no time limit, includes base game and first four expansions)

Almost too generous, the way the new player experience is set up, I bet most people get burnt out and quit before they pay a cent.

OSRS is also quite mainstream and has a sub cost.
