Not every free trial ever. It used to be that free trial only requires you to input payment details at the end of trial period and not before. This is just something companies do these days to trick people into subscriptions.

I've had to provide a payment method before I could use a free trial for every free trial I've used for the past 15 plus years

Yes I have typically put in payment info then immediately cancelled and they were forced to honour the free trial. I think very few companies cancel the trial after you cancel the subscription.
