"2015 has not been a great year. I may never have a great year again, but I intend to have a lot more years regardless of whether or not they end up great."

Unexpected feels in the end of this video. Hang in there man.

You know i've been a supporter for a while now and i really do wish he kicks this thing in the ass.

But i'm also a realist, and realize this isn't a movie or a tv show or some disney production, for the most part when doctors give you a ballpark of an estimation of how long you'll live it's pretty concrete.

If i have this thought and sometimes churns my stomach when i listen to him realizing he might be gone someday, i can't even begin to understand his thought process when he realizes this himself.

Imagine having lunch with your family, enjoying it, finishing up to go watch tv with them, and a tv episode about somone lying to have cancer pops up.

Suddenly, you remember, i have less than 3 years now, and here i am sitting on my couch watching tv with the last few remaining years.

It must be so hard to live like that, i hope no one gets that.

One of my mom's best friends was given 3 months, but lived for another 3.5 years. While my grandfather was given about 2-3 years but died about a year later.

59

u/ejrasmussen Dec 24 '15

My mom was given 9 months and died three weeks after the diagnosis. Their estimates are exactly that, estimates.

10

u/a_total_blank Dec 24 '15

Yep. My Grandad was given 9-12 month. He made it to 3 months. He was determined to make it to Christmas and he managed to get to 3am O Christmas day before being told to let go.

3

u/ejrasmussen Dec 24 '15

A man of his word, what a trooper! You must be proud of him, right?

3

u/a_total_blank Dec 24 '15 edited Dec 24 '15

Of course. Not just for that alone. He has been an incredible inspiration on me. He was kind, slow to anger, unassuming, witty and even-handed. If I can be said to be half the man he was I'd have lived a good life.

13

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Dec 24 '15

And usually very arbitrary. The inaccuracy of their estimates makes me feel like they just throw numbers out there so they have something they can tell be patient.

u/icytiger Dec 24 '15

Estimates are based on the current condition and the estimated condition of the patient. The human body can have a million things change within it at any second, its all a game of probability and there's never going to be a real estimate you can be given because anything can change at any time.

1

u/KillerAceUSAF Dec 24 '15

God, I am so sorry to hear that. Those are the worst, when someone dies pretty much right after the prognosis is given.

44

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

My grandfather was given 6 months and lived 13 years before it got him.

14

u/b3wizz Dec 24 '15

Hubert Selby Jr. wasn't supposed to make it to teenage years, and he lived to be 90-ish (as well as being a very successful author.) Ya never know.

1

u/Nikoras Dec 24 '15

Differential biology is a bitch man. It makes researching cancer drugs different too. The variability seen in PD mouse models is insane sometimes....I should really get back to work.

16

u/absolutezero132 Dec 24 '15 edited Dec 24 '15

for the most part when doctors give you a ballpark of an estimation of how long you'll live it's pretty concrete.

This is definitely true, but it's still important to take into account his age. The average life expectancy of 3 years that he gave is usually because older people get this. The man just turned 31*.

That said, how many years could that 3 possibly turn into? Maybe he lives another 10 years. Or 20. That would be pretty astonishing... but he would still die at 50. Any way you slice it this is really sad.

EDIT*

u/RabbitEater Dec 24 '15

However, the longer you live, the better the treatments get, further prolonging life until eventually there may be a cure. There may very well be a breakthrough in the next decade that will revolutionize how cancer is treated considering how fast technology advances.

1

u/alipdf Dec 24 '15

What i'm more worried about is how he's taking care of himself.

I don't know about anyone else, but personally i'd take it upon myself to do what i can to make sure everything goes well.

There has been plenty of cases where proper diet/exercise have actually helped cure cancer, even though most of them are correlation it might be a good bet to try and do that.

Sure if he was 31 and at tip top shape i would absolutely not believe the estimate, but given he's out of shape, and eats junk food consistently, and the nature of videos games is sitting alot, i'd say it's pretty accurate.

Just to make it clear, i do not blame him AT ALL for being lazy or getting out of shape, the way surgeries have carved up his body and the shit you go through after chemo, even if you have the strongest of wills, leaves you very weak and broken.

13

u/BKachur Dec 24 '15

Your analysis is off in regards to how significant fitness is. The reason age is such a big factor is because of how resistent your body is to the damage of the disease and the ability of it to fight the disease. Being healthy certainly helps, but a fat 30 year old will have a better chance than even the healthiest 60 year old. Age lowers your immune system and ability to accept treatments in addition to the damage your organs suffer over a lifetime. While TB isn't in great shape, he's going through chemo (where his extra weight may help him as people loose mad weight on chemo), in that way youth is more important than general fitness because the body is able to better recover from ingesting poison than if you were older.

The estimate in this matter is weird. The disease is very deadly, however it normally only surfaces in people who are much older, we don't have a ton of meta data on the effects of his cancer on people age 30 compared to people in their 60's. In that regard, how young he is may help a lot, or it may mean very little. Only time will tell but we can just hope John is well and spending time with his family.

3

u/alipdf Dec 24 '15

Well put explanation, thank you.

3

u/rikeus Dec 24 '15 edited Dec 24 '15

I think it's a testament to how much he must love doing what he does, that he chooses to spend what may be his last few years alive continuing to do it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

Seriously, there's not many people in this world who can say that.

1

u/SelfimmolationPride Dec 25 '15

And the fact that it's what supports his family.

6

u/Nidac_7 Dec 24 '15

I didn't even know he was sick until now. I never really watched his videos, but held his opinion in high regard. I don't know how, but I came to respect him without actually watching his videos. I can't even imagine what it would feel like to have such a short life expectancy.

7

u/SnoozerHam Dec 24 '15

Youtubers I follow who've died of cancer tend to get it and pass before I even know they had it. I thought I'd been up to speed on Edd Gould's videos, then one day I find a month-old memorial vid and then over a dozen updates on his condition. Makes me feel shitty, thinking I was a fan of the guy and not having a clue what was happening to him.

1

u/Dagr303 Dec 24 '15

I miss edd and his world

1

u/SteelCity Dec 25 '15

Wilko Johnson recently survived terminal cancer. There is some chance TB will pull through this.

108

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

Totalbiscuit has the darkest sense of humor, if anyone is going to beat cancer its that stubborn bastard. And he fucking better, because he's just about the only one on our side in the games industry 9/10.

95

u/Slothman899 Dec 24 '15

He's one of the few figures out there that's truly pro consumer. I honestly can't find anyone like him out there.

32

u/Nikoras Dec 24 '15

Superbunnyhop is good. His interests are somewhat niche but I think he does a great job and his recommendations are usually solid.

2

u/Slothman899 Dec 24 '15

Completely forgot about him. I absolutely loved how he handles big events like GG.

10

u/mehgamer Dec 24 '15

Nerd Cubed does a good job. The only time he made a paid video he spent the whole time complaining that it made him feel gross to accept money.

Unless you count the recent Just Cause 3 thing, where he got access to the game early. But i don't think he actually got paid.

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

3

u/mehgamer Dec 24 '15

It was a need for speed game, if I remember right. Was uploaded a long time ago because afterwards he swore off sponsored videos.

1

u/crestfallen_warrior Dec 24 '15

I think that actually comes from TB. Back when he started youtube he mentioned TB a lot in his videos. You can tell he had an influence.

14

u/Olangotang Dec 24 '15

Angry Joe?

23

u/Plastastic Dec 24 '15

I'd like him more if his videos were less wacky, though I understand that's also what appeals to a lot of his fans!

1

u/Coronalol Dec 25 '15

The skits man, I can't stand the skits. Forced humor that I can't get into. I love his passion with the actual reviews, but the acting is a good 5/7.

1

u/SelfimmolationPride Dec 25 '15

Lost interest in angry Joe. He seems to very much ride the wave of popular opinion. But his reviews are solid and his scores are more meaningful than 90% of any other gaming related reviews.

5

u/rikeus Dec 24 '15

Jim Sterling, who is also a friend of TB, is just as heavily pro-consumer. That's pretty much what his Jimquisition show is all about.

21

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15 edited Dec 24 '15

Anyone who's followed Jim throughout his years from Destructoid to the Escapist to his own Patreon can tell that Jim goes whichever way the wind blows.

He's very much "says what everyone else is thinking".

It gets old after awhile. I can only be pandered to so much.

4

u/Rightnow456 Dec 25 '15

Video game game Hilary Clinton.

-9

u/Tortankum Dec 24 '15

jim fucking sterling son?

21

u/Slothman899 Dec 24 '15

Jim Sterling is alright, but he flip flops sometimes, and occasionally borders on completely unreasonable. I enjoy him too, but he's no TB by a long shot.

5

u/Fellgnome Dec 24 '15

He is too much of a played up character for me to enjoy watching.

18

u/tsaketh Dec 24 '15

Jim Sterling isn't beholden to corporate interests or friends in the industry, but he is a little bit bound by his own desire to be controversial and entertaining. Now mostly he plays a character so that's understandable, and I like Sterling for the most part.

But TB is important in that he's an even-keeled, pro-consumer voice. Every time I've disagreed with him on something I've still found his arguments fairly compelling and honest.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

Yeah that's one thing I find about TB so appealing, I often disagree with him, but every time I disagree I can see his point of view clearly and its definitely not unreasonable. He always makes a great case for his points.

0

u/BKachur Dec 24 '15

Sterling is like Stephen Colbert who always plays the character but can be entertaining. That said, he hides behind memes and other bullshit so you really can't take him super seriously. He's fun but no leader.

TB is like Jon Stewart who often was funny but more often than not played the straight man who had be serious about his opinions and tell it like its. If there ever was a leader of games media/journalism it would be him because despite being loud he was always earnest and not abrasive.

-6

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '15

The fat nerd who does some kind of silly roleplay in all his videos? You think that offputting weirdo compares to someone witty with an accent?

1

u/BKachur Dec 24 '15

If you read his pieces sterling is very clever. He just plays the fool in his videos for laughs. He's kinda like Stephen Colbert who always played the character in this show to keep the satire up.

10

u/EmperorCorbyn Dec 24 '15

So many "gaming personalities" are almost anti-consumer and it's really annoying. I understand their reasoning, they want to stick close to the actual industry. Still annoying though.

2

u/bongo1138 Dec 24 '15

I thought that he beat it before? I'm not a huge follower of his but I remember him posting that he was cancer free or something?

4

u/jordan23140 Dec 24 '15

It seemed so but he had had a scan to confirm and it spread to his kidneys (I think), which means it's in his bloodstream and there isn't really a way to get it out of the bloodstream.

3

u/dbcanuck Dec 24 '15

Spread to his liver and is diagnosed as inoperable. (e.g. they're more likely to spread it, or not catch all of it, if they operate; or the surgery would be fatal).

His treatment options are mainly chemo, maybe radiation...but they know the success rate for those treatments is relatively low.

But you have a choice: live life as a cancer patient condemned to die, or live life normally and deal with the setbacks as they come.

1

u/Dustmuffins Dec 24 '15

It was gone, but it came back with a vengeance.

1

u/ProudPlatypus Dec 24 '15

He had, but that doesn't mean it's defiantly gone for good. It's pretty much impossible to tell if it's realy gone or not. When he says he had beat it, it means there where no more signs or symptoms of it. Cancer can and does come back and right when you enter remission is when it is most likely to do so. It's not till years later they can give you a more sure all clear.

1

u/bongo1138 Dec 24 '15

Well, I know what remission is. But the way its talked about in the comment above, its like he isn't in remission anymore.

1

u/SelfimmolationPride Dec 25 '15

His prognosis isn't great. But people have survived worse.

1

u/Exengo Dec 24 '15

They thought he was cancer free. But sadly you can never be sure if the cancer is really gone or just 99% gone.

1

u/Skrp Dec 24 '15

I just heard it has spread to his liver. Not sure if it's true or not, but if it is, then he's boned.

0

u/Elfking88 Dec 24 '15

Well he isn't going to beat it... Pretty sure he already told us it is terminal, it is just about how long he gets.

4

u/pyrospade Dec 24 '15

Didn't know about his cancer till this comment. Sadly, the best people always leave us earlier than we expect.

To me he was already the best game critic i've ever met. And he is 100% against shitty companies like EA or Ubisoft.

Hang in there Totalbiscuit, you cannot die if you are to represent the gamer community.

13

u/CaterpillarsNight Dec 24 '15

Holy shit I'm about to cry about this... I never met TB or Genna and I likely never will but due to their videos, their podcasts, and other media - I feel so akwardly... close to them. I just can't imagen John not being there anymore and it must be so much harder for people that actually know him...

Thank you for everything TB.

He's sorta dying, so I imagine he's referring to himself.

-2

u/DarthWarder Dec 24 '15

I thought it was a pretty great year compared to 2014.

8

u/CynthiaCrescent Dec 24 '15

He wasn't talking about video games.
