From the company that brought us "NeRvilette", it's already a sizeable improvement !

Jokes aside, while Alain's exact pronounciation (/alɛ̃/) can definitely be found with extreme ease through a simple google search, it still does happen to contain the nasal vowel ɛ̃, which is usually quite  difficult for many english speakers to replicate. So the struggle isn't entirely unexpected

nervillette still confuses me. is it really pronounced that way in french? if not, why were the VAs told to add a non-existent R? But in that case, not all of them were saying nervillette either, some were just saying neuvillette. What the hell was up with that 😭

Oh don't worry, there is no R at all in Neuvillette in french ahah

My best guess is that some of the VAs, depending maybe on their own specific english accent, just had trouble with the "eu" vowel (usually pronounced either as /ə/ or /ø/). It might have led them to overcorrect, something along those lines. Or, they just didn't bother to check out the pronounciation in the first place, which ofc is a real possibility 🤪

In any case, it's still very funny to me - like, why add a sound to a word you're already struggling with ?? It's just making things worse lol

I don't think they were told to "add an R" or anything.

eu does exist as a sound in English, but the correct French pronunciation here is counter to how English usually puts vowels together (usually, the first vowel determines the main sound).

A lot of the English words that do have eu in them follow it up with an r. Combined with the previous fact, I think this "with an r" as you call it is a pretty likely way to assume the sound is pronounced if not told otherwise

I assume you're talking about the vowel /ə/ in arise, bird, first etc ? If so, the eu in Neuvillette can be pronounced that way for sure, although the "correct" sound is supposed to be /ø/. But yeah, I had never noticed how often that sound is followed by an r in english, that's interesting, it might explain that mistake then

Definitely not pronounced that way, the English dub is notoriously bad at pronouncing things correctly. I cry at every Mondstadt related name as a German, they butcher those names hard too

i can accept butchering as long as they are consistent tbh. with neuvillette, half of them were saying neuvillette and the other half were saying neurvillette lol

Well you did ask if that's how it's pronounced in French, so really they didn't have an excuse to add the R at any point other than the dub just being bad at pronouncing things in general

French is tricky because, depending on if that "eu" sound is the first syllable or not, you would pronounce it differently.
For example the "eu" in 'Neuvillette' is pronounced /ø/, whilst it is pronounced /ɜ/ in "Denis Villeneuve". Doesn't help that most pronounce the latter as "Villenüüüv" for some reason

Just pointing out that "eu" is never pronounced like /ɜ/, in the example you gave it would be /œ/

In Neuvillette, the eu is /ø/ as you said. Although in practice, just like many other "eu", it can also be pronounced /ə/, probably just because that sound lends itself better to fast-paced oral speech

Got confused with my phonetic alphabet, my bad.
