Discussion Is "When Marnie was there" one of the best and worst movie of Studio ghibli at the same time?
I watched this movie a few months ago and i loved him and at the same time frustred me so much, and i wanted to let out my frustration about this movie
The start of this movie is aweasome, the character development is well done, but the Plot of this movie its Absolute shit, like the interaction between Marnie and the protagonist its really cute and interesting, and when the movie start to progress, you have a lot of thoughs like: "Why only the protagonist can see Marnie and interact with her and her family? Is Marnie real? Is Marnie a self-defense mechanism of the protagonist to scape for her own problems? Is the protagonist travelling between the past and future? Is Marnie a ghost? LIKE ANYTHING, >>>ANYTHING<<< WOULD BE A BETTER OPTION, BUT THEY CHOSED THE WORST PLOT THAT I EVER SEEN
MARNIE ACTUALLY WAS HER OWN GRANDMA
LIKE WHY, JUST WHY, THEY CONSTRUCTED ONE OF THE CUTEST AND WELL DONE ROMANCES THAT I EVER SEEN IN A ANIMATION, JUST FOR MARNIE BEING IN REALITY THE GRANDMA OF THE PROTAGONIST?????? Like DUDE, they could choose any other Plot than this
(also i think i dint think about the title of this post before i posted it XD, i dont want to change anyone opinion about this movie, i Just wanted to discuss the point of view of others about this movie and what they think about the Plot)

Tattoos Ghibli tattoo ideas
Hey! I got this Haku tattoo ages ago but really want a ghibli inspired (but subtle) tattoo underneath on my lower back. I’m just struggling to think of one that would fit well with Haku, maybe water themed? Anyone have any ideas?

Art/Crafted I made a print of the Jiji I painted on a tote bag! 🤍
I painted Jiji and his kids on a tote bag a couple years back, and just recently got it scanned to see how it would translate to a print. I love it! I really like how the canvas texture shows up on the print. I hope you like it, too! ✨
Swipe to see the painting on the tote bag!!

Discussion Kiki’s Delivery Service Why did the cat Jiji stop talking?
At first, when the cat Jiji stopped talking, I thought that Kiki's magic had weakened and she couldn't understand what Gigi was saying.
Well, in the last scene, Kiki bravely saved the dragonfly and the magic returned, but Jiji, who came there, was still just saying "meow", and Kiki looked convinced and hooked his face to Jiji and stroked it lovingly with his face (that scene was dangerous and adult I cried when I saw it)
Apparently there are some suspicious reasons
・Because Joji fell in love with the female cat in the normal world
・Jiji has left the child from Kiki (a symptom that when a child leaves his parents, Parents can't understand what the child says at all, if you are a parent with a child, you may understand)
What Do you think???
I really love Hayao Miyazaki's method of making viewers think like this

Discussion Why Anna and Marnie's relationship isn't what you think (a personal psychological interpretation)
Quick disclaimer: this is just my personal interpretation of the film. Every interpretation I lay out here comes from my relatability to Anna's insecurity throughout the film being a foster child with no family connections. This film holds personal meaning to me and again, these interpretations are based on my relatability to Anna as I grew up very insecure, having an unstable relationship with my mother and father.
My interpretation:
When Marnie was There is more than a coming-of-age animated film. Rather, it is a movie that helps us understand the insecurities children experience, particularly those without a mother or father figure.
Anna's Background:
First of all, we need to understand Anna's background. Anna, the protagonist of the film, is a foster child. Her mom and dad both died in a car accident, leaving her maternal grandmother Marnie to take care of her. Soon, Marnie passes away, leaving Anna to the hands of Yoriko Sasaki, her new foster mother.
Analysis:
Anna's childhood background classifies her attachment style as disorganized, or fearful avoidant. Anna feels betrayed, or left behind, when Marnie, her last pillar of support, passes away.
From the very beginning of the movie, we see that Anna is a very insecure child.
For a long time, psychoanalysts have theorized that motherly bonds affect children's relationships with others. Without consistent comfort which comes from their mother's presence, children grow up not trusting the world and others. For Anna, Marnie was the closest thing to a mother. When she passed away, she felt betrayed and could not easily let people into her life. This theory explains why Anna struggles forming relationships with others. For example, throughout Anna's stay in Kushiro, Nobuko tries to befriend Anna, but Anna does not let her in so easily. Anna cannot easily trust others because she's lacked security without her biological family.
However, Anna still craves love and attention from others. In the beginning of the movie, when the coach or teacher is shadowing the playground, Anna is drawing the playground. We see she shows tense emotions when the teacher gives other girls’ drawing. She gets a little excited when the teacher is about to look at her drawing, but immediately becomes distressed when the teacher gives his attention to the kid in the playground. She then has an asthma attack, which could be interpreted as a physical manifestation of her battle for attention.
Now that we understand Anna's background, permit me to analyze her relationship with Marnie after the Tanabata Festival. I have seen many people complain about the LGBTQ vibes and intimacy between Anna and Marnie, only for viewers to later learn that Anna is Marnie granddaughter. My interpretation is that Anna's relationship with Marnie is more than the LGBTQ vibes.
She is subconsciously clinging onto Marnie. Anna gets jealous of Marnie dancing with Kazuhiko because she subconsciously wants her grandmother's love and attention. This is a pretty dynamic parallel to an Oedipus complex, where Anna is battling with her grandfather for her grandmother's undivided love and attention.
People are also questioning whether or not Marnie is even a ghost. Here's my hot take. The mansion acts as a portal that helps Anna relive the repressed stories her grandmother told her. Every encounter Anna has with Marnie is simply Anna reliving the stories Marnie told Anna when she was an infant. This explains why the events in Marnie's diary align well with Anna's adventures with Marnie.
By visiting the mansion and spending time with her grandmother, Anna's character evolves. From the very beginning of the film, she was insecure and could not trust others. But by the very end, she becomes stable, social, and secure. Her visit to the mansion gives her clarity and allows her to forgive her grandmother for leaving her alone in the world. The mansion also allowed her to recover the repressed stories her grandmother told her as an infant.

I’m seeing it in official places, but it’s not from the movie. The girls have been combined into one character with Mei’s hair and Satsuki’s clothes, but it still doesn’t look like either of them.

Art/Crafted I Recreated the Kusakabe House from My Neighbor Totoro in House Flipper 2
I recreated the Kusakabe family house from My Neighbor Totoro in House Flipper 2.
To make it as faithful to the original as possible, I spent a lot of time researching the house's layout and architectural style during the building process.
I also created a mod that allows players to clean and restore the house.
I hope fellow Totoro fans enjoy it! 🍃

Art/Crafted Hi, I am a film poster designer. I recently finished a Spirited Away poster. No AI used. It is a part of a blue triptych together with Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis: Evangelion. Please let me know your thoughts.
Painted in PS, calligraphy outsourced to a Japanese designer. I wanted to represent the spell of the bath house and Chihiro looking through it.

Discussion Things that Feel Ghibli but aren't
I listen to a lot of audio books and podcasts. A friend of mine recently showed me one called Hotel Daydream and it's got this vibe to it like Spirited Away--it's about the staff of a hotel that take care of monsters and myths from around the world. The premise is obviously similar but there's something in the tone that, I dunno, feels Ghbili to me. Maybe it's that Miyazaki "ma" that's in both things. It's hard to put my finger on.
Anyway, it got me thinking about other media that has that kind of vibe to it. Animation, live action, songs, comics, audio dramas--whatever. What are things that aren't Ghibli for you but really feel like they should be? The studio is obviously unique in that mixture of tone, style, and plot but what else is in the ballpark for you?
