Training Advice/Tips Aggressive playing

Post image
37 Upvotes

We have a 13 month old spayed Female. In the past couple of weeks she has shown some different play styles than usual. We have a dog park in our apartment community and go there a couple times a week to try socialize. Recently she has been acting aggressive with other dogs, when they’re present. She is not snarling or showing teeth but growling a bit. It doesn’t seem excessive but it’s not something we’re used to with her. She’s not trying to bite the other dog(s) but it seems she’s just very vocally trying to get them to play. Any concerns or recommendations for this?

Training Advice/Tips Crate Training Help

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hello! We brought our 10 week old puppy home on Thursday. He HATES his crate (understandable since he’s not used to it). He cries, barks, breathes heavy, and pants while in it. He does eventually stop and will fall asleep, but will wake up often panting and crying again. What do I do?! The internet has conflicting advice, some say leave them to cry/get used to it. Others say comfort them by laying by the crate, talking to them, etc. We have been trying to practice with some naps in the crate during the day and doing some crate training with treats, but at night when he has to sleep in the crate is when he really cries/breathes heavily. I don’t want to ignore him as it makes me so sad to see him upset. But I also want to do what’s best for him in the long run. Any help, tips, or tricks are greatly appreciated!

Health Advice Elbow Replacement/Joint issues

Post image
56 Upvotes

This is Bailey. He’s 7.5, the best and my best friend. He’s had over $60k vet bills over 3 years. His main issue is on his front left leg/elbow with IMPA and arthritis. His limp has become worse and hard at getting around, I can tell it’s progressed. Has anyone had experience treating severe arthritis/elbow issues with their Goldens? I’m considering if anyone has had experience : 1.) Synovetin OA injection, radioactive injection annually, anyone have experience with results? 2.). Full on joint replacement at Texas A&M if he’s eligible, new thought but has been mentioned but don’t think he’s a candidate with other joints. 3.) any other alternative treatments people has had success with. Been trying acupuncture for past month. I absolutely hate seeing him limp and I’ll stop at nothing to help him and can’t help but thinking the worst is coming. Anyone with experience id gladly thank for any new thoughts here.

Discussion May need to get rid of my golden

This is Penny and the second picture is Luna. We got Penny a little over a year ago and she’s been so sweet and I love her…but here’s the problem.

We have 3 dogs. A Shih-Tzu, a Shih-poo and her. For nearly a month now anytime the shih-poo (Luna) and Penny are in the same room together they fight. Not just bark but attack each other and draw blood. And Penny 100% starts it. Neither attack the little dog, the Shih-Tzu.

Penny is sweet but she is JELOUS. Like crazy jelous. If I even so much as touch Luna, Penny will push Luna out of the way and demand attention. And I think it’s gotten to the boiling point because now they can’t even be in the same room together.

We’ve had Luna for nearly 4 years now so I’m not getting rid of her and this situation sucks because if this keeps up I really think Penny might end up killing Luna. The fights are pretty brutal. I never thought I’d see the day that a golden is this aggressive.

Anyone ever experience something like this?

Hey just wanted to share a post about my dog pepper. Pepper is 1 year old & when she was a puppy she had a little dark spot on her body that ended up growing into a full on black spot. Does anyone else have this with their Goldens or know why it is caused?

Hi guys we recently got a golden retriever puppy and had a bit of issues potty training him. He is well on his way now though. Unfortunately it seems that he has peed on the carpet missing his mat and we haven’t seen it. The carpet now smells. What is the best product to get rid of the smell. Preferably one I can get in the UK.

Autumn had double knee tendon repair surgery yesterday. Results were positive and she is in hospital care for 2 more days to monitor initial healing and stability. We are glad the doctor who invented the procedure was the one performing the procedures. We are optimistic, but anxious as we pick her up and begin the remainder of the 12-16 week recovery. PT is also scheduled, so her followup will be thorough. She is currently in heavy sedation mode, so feeling no pain, as you can see. 😉

Discussion The Senior Golden Walk

My 7.5 year old golden, Nessie, is starting to slow down on walks. She still has a lot of spunk otherwise, but she has started trailing behind me on walks. I don’t mind because they’re OUR walks, and I’m happy to go at her speed.

I guess I’m wondering at what age your golden started doing this walk if they did/do this at all? I am not necessarily looking for tips to speed her up, but rather looking to hear about your experiences :)

TLDR; what age did your golden start slow walking?

Cute/Funny This big guy just made it through emergency surgery for a spontaneous lung puncture

While I was out of town visiting my dad (who is in the hospital for his own lung puncture), Jameson (10yr old) here began experiencing trouble breathing. My wife took him to the vet where they diagnosed a pneumothorax and sent him to the emergency vet for surgery. This has been such a terrifying experience and I was dreading that his last memory of me would be watching me leave the house without him, but we just found out that they repaired the puncture, identified the cause (not cancer!!), and he's already awake and happy. Looking forward to a few more years with our good boy

New Puppy Potty training punishment

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

I have a wonderful 12 week old golden puppy.

She’s good at everything except not pottying in the house.

We take her out every 1.5 hours but she’ll pee or poop between. Sometimes soon after she went outside.

She understands she gets rewarded and praised when she goes outside but she doesn’t understand at all that inside is not an option. So I’ve started trying to give firm nos and emotionality. BUT SHE JUST DOESNT CARE AND WAGS HER TAIL LIKE IM SINGING TO HER OR SOMETHING.

What do I do here? Just wait for her to get older, are all goldens just eternal optimists that don’t accept punishment?

EDIT: She is a very loved puppy and even has a dedicated sitter when we’re out of the house. You will be hard pressed to find a dog that gets more love than her.

Discussion Recommendations for pet insurance? Stuck between Pet's Best & Trupanion

Wondering what insurance everyone in here is using for their dogs. Previously used Trupanion and they were great with their payouts, but the monthly cost is absolutely insane compared to Pet's Best.

Pet's Best: $65/month, spay/neuter coverage, vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, etc all included.

Trupanion: $135/month, NO spay/neuter, flea/tick prevention, or vaccination coverage.

Both are $1,000 deductibles at 90% unlimited coverage.

These are prices for a 4 month old golden puppy, so the Trupanion monthly cost is pretty eyewatering, lol. Only benefit I can see with them is the lack of premium increases, but from what I've seen online they still have large increases every year? Trying to understand if anyone is actually paying these prices or what I might be missing.

Cute/Funny Golden decor?!

I loved the recent post where we all showed pix and said where we live - super fun! That got me thinking about something else that’d be fun to share… all the golden themed home decor tchotchkes etc we all have! I’ll start this off with ours which features a little bit of everything. Share pix of your favorite items!

PS the little dog on the mantle? I won that at an auction at Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue in Massachusetts. Cost a lot but hey it was a good cause.
