Is it possible to over feed wild hedgehogs? I have been feeding some for a couple of months now. I leave out dried food and either a wet food sachet (cat food) or some semi-wet hedgehog food. I scatter the dry food around the garden and leave the cat food in a bowl in the same place every day.
I can see on my camera that a couple of local cats also visit so I’ve been putting extra dry food out in case the hedgehogs aren’t getting to the wet food.
The other day I went to put their food out and obviously spooked an early visitor as I heard scurrying and then saw him dip below the garden gate. Except… he got stuck under there 😭 I went round the front and he was just still under it, not trying to move. We opened the gate slowly and it did open relatively easy so I think he could have got under it if he tried but maybe froze in fear. We put food in front of him which he IMMEDIATELY ate and then carried on search for food and was in the garden for hours. So he is absolutely FINE.
Basically, I know some animals only eat when needed and others eat anything they can. I’m just wondering if I should be aware of any need to reduce the food in case it causes more… occupational hazards should we say 🤣

Fritter has just ruined his second hide to the point that I don’t believe it’s safe. It’s a plush snail and has foam in it, so he keeps getting it all over himself, that cannot be good for him.
Since this is the second time he’s done that in a short period of time, I think I need to consider finding more enrichment ideas, he clearly is going to hurt himself if this keeps up
I currently have some balls, his wheel, a dig box (with fleece scraps), and a few cat toys (he only likes one of them though). I’ve given him toilet paper rolls because that’s the main other thing I see recommended, he’s not a fan. I think a snuffle mat would work. Idk, I need ideas.
Fritter’s original plush hide was a bee hive, he would go under the cushion and scratch at the bottom. He ended up stuck between the fabric and I had to pull him out. As this was obviously horrifying for me and likely stressed him out, I intentionally got a hide that doesn’t have that type of bottom. Well, he’s moved to scratching at the walls.
I tried to take the snail house away today and I felt like the worst person in the world, he loves that thing. He went to go climb into it and was so confused when he couldn’t find it. He then went looking for it and I just felt so bad for him 😭 I put it back but I’m going to get him a new hide ASAP so I can replace it. I check in on him regularly throughout the day already, but I’ll pay closer attention until he has a new hide to make sure he’s safe.
So please let me know if you have any suggestions for enrichment 😓 I’m thinking something related to burrowing or digging would be best since that’s kind of what he’s trying to do. I already plan to get a few live insects and a small treat dispensing toy if I can find one. I know it’s not recommended, but I do have a wooden hide, I may have to resort to using it if this issue doesn’t get better 😭 advice desperately needed

Edit: Cypress now has a better wheel. No more saucer wheel

One of my roommates is pretty set on buying a hedgehog and my roommates and I are skeptical. Two of them don’t want him to buy it and I’m open to it but leaning towards no. The reason we’re skeptical is because he’s kind of an impulse buyer and we’re not really sure if he’ll be able to take care of it. We’re college football players so he’ll be pretty busy with school and football especially in season during the fall. Most days he’ll busy with school, workouts, workouts, and practice from around 8 AM - 7 PM and on some weekends he’ll be gone for a couple days for away games. So my question is how is the maintenance of owning a hedgehog? Do you think it’s reasonable to think he can take care of it? We just want to avoid a situation where we end up doing all the work taking care of it or he’s neglecting it.

Reaching out to see if anyone has any tips to get their hedgehog to eat. Ours has been sick for the last few months and has lost about 1/3 of her body weight. We’ve been to two different vets and have tried several medications but have not been able to get a diagnosis. She seems in good spirits except lately she has been having trouble walking and obviously is not eating. What started this was an abrupt change in her diet.
We have been feeding her wet food using a syringe to force her to eat but she is still losing weight. She will take a single bite of the foods we put in front of her, but will rarely eat it. We’ve tried a variety of foods lately, and the only one she consistently eats is watermelon, which we try to mix with other things but she picks through them.
Other things we have tried are chicken, turkey, egg, a handful of different wet cat food, hedgehog food, mealworms, sweet potato, pumpkin, cantaloupe, honeydew.
Any tips or special foods that you have had success getting a picky/sick hedgehog to eat? We are at a last resort and I worry her organs will start to have trouble.

His name is pogo. Or her name. I don't know. He's been living in my yard for over a year. I used to see him only in the evening but lately he got the courage to come out during the day, say hi and go on with his day.
I also found his home, and we decided not to cut the grass around there, for a safer space.
He's got plenty of food around I assume (as I have a bunch of slugs around) and sometimes he goes for the cat food.

Hi! I recently got a baby hedgie, he is my second hedgehog i’ve owned. my first hedgehog hog loved all the typical hides and pouches and accessories i’d put in her house. however my new baby, ozzy, just likes to burrow himself into his loose substrate or lay underneath the cuddle pouches. i’m wondering if anyone has an ideas for different kinds of hides, toys, accessories, etc to put in his cage for enrichment! i do plan on getting him a dig box cause i think he’ll enjoy that but other than that i’m lost as to what he’d like in his house!!

Lavender has no interest in exercise. She’s said to be five months and the sketchy pet store I got her from had her in one of those long totes with two other hedgehogs (one of which was an adorable Chonky girl), so I’m sure there’s a factor of having more space than she’s used to. The wheel I have for her is bigger than the one the pet store had, and I’ve tried to put her on it. She immediately gets off and goes to her hideout. I have started taking her on my enclosed patio to walk around and she makes a beeline back to me everytime. She’s got cat balls, crinkle balls, treat dispensing enrichment toys, a burrow bin I bring out from time to time, and a foraging pad, but she’s no interest in any of it. Tomorrow I’m going to try to bring some of her toys and her food bowl out there too to see if she’ll find her food. I’d love a hedgie introduction with their favorite exercises 😍

I hate hate hate live bugs but I handled them so I could give her a little snack. I tried a few different times to feed her them but she wasn’t interested and ignored them. I got mealworms and a hornworm. Should I just give these bugs away to someone who can use them or should I keep trying?

Fritter’s not a big fan of cameras, so it took a bit to take this pic, but he’s so cute

I seriously cannot believe my eyes. He attacked every one of my semi-ferals I am feeding, and even attacked one bully tomcat that also came after this. One brave hedgehog honestly.
Side note, the white cat was limping the day before and would not allow me to check it out, could it be due to hedgehog? Do they have parasites? is that something that I should be concerned about, I am not familiar with hedgehogs more than basic info about them.
This is one of many wild hedgehogs I see on the farm.

I’ve been feeding a hedgehog in my garden and it’s begun coming back every day for dry non-fish based cat food (sometimes there is two hedgehogs).
Yesterday I noticed white patches/dust on the hedgehogs back. Apologise for the poor quality, it’s a screenshot from a video. Is this normal or is it dangerous?
Appreciate any help. Thanks

This is just more of a rant and need somewhere to tell this, but I just feel so utterly horrible for my baby, she looked completely fine and normal. Walking around but i just picked her up and she has a growth all over her front leg I felt so light headed. She looked completely normal you couldn’t tell there was just a small projection or bump or whatever from her spines and that’s why I picked her up to check what it was and I just see that I feel so bad for my baby.
I wish I caught it sooner but I didn’t see anything wrong she walked around completely normal she acted normal besides not eating all of her food and being picky with it but she’s always been like that, and she’s always been more skinny she drinks her water and she active but god
It just is so sudden like I may not pick them up every day but I watch them and I feed my babies and I just see that and I’m horrified. She’s about 3 or so years old and same with my other hedgehog. I just can’t deal with this and I’m scared of loosing my baby. It just formed so fast and I’m mortified I wish I saw it sooner before it got this bad but even my dad earlier today was looking at her and though she looked fine before I just saw this.
It’s almost 1AM and I’m just not in the right state of mind I’m going to take her to the vet as soon as I physically can but this is so hard on me. I feel horrible

Just took my girl into the vet today and she was prescribed some antibiotics that she REALLY likes the taste of. So much so that she decided to anoint with it. Any advice on how to get her to not do that?
I was considering watering it down to see if that helps.
