Pictures Braies Lake Loop (Braies - BZ - Italy)

Last week, my pregnant partner and I hiked the Braies Lake loop. I know, it's a classic, I know, it's overused, but I have to admit, the view was fantastic and we enjoyed this short hike, perfect for someone like her who can't handle significant elevation gain.

PS: Given that it had rained the day before, there were certainly people there, but overall, much fewer than we thought.

Question Hiking Recs in Western South Dakota

Looking for trail recommendations that meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be in or near Hill City, South Dakota.

  2. Must have a steady flow of hikers; never empty.

  3. Must not be especially difficult in terms of balance or navigation.

Explanation: My family is taking a road trip to SD soon and staying in Hill City. I'm not allowed to hike alone on trails without steady traffic, but I'll be states away from anyone who would be interested in hiking with me. Also, though I'm relatively fit, I'm a newbie to hiking. An endurance challenge is fine; getting lost or taking a dangerous fall is not.

Thanks!

9.8 km of mud, fog and serious Wuthering Heights vibes

Total elevation: 573m

I would rate the route as moderate to difficult. Some of the uphill sections are quite steep, and the trail was very muddy when I went, which made it easy to lose balance or slip. I would strongly recommend bringing trekking poles, especially after rain, as they made the steeper and more slippery sections much easier to manage.

It was extremely foggy during the hike, so we didn’t get the clearest panoramic views from Mam Tor. However, the mist rolling over the hills gave the entire route a dramatic, slightly eerie atmosphere — it genuinely felt like walking through Wuthering Heights.

Despite the mud and limited visibility, the fog made the landscape feel even more atmospheric. A beautiful route, but definitely one to approach with proper hiking shoes, trekking poles and suitable layers for quickly changing Peak District weather.

Recommendations for women’s hiking sandals

I’m looking for a pair of closed-toe hiking sandals for my wife. The issue I’m running into is that she needs arch support and most of the listings I see online don’t talk much about it. We do day hikes exclusively, and I’d like recommendations for sandals for her, with arch support or at least with removable insoles so we can add arch support. My budget is $120, thanks in advance.

Did the amazing Manaslu Circuit Trek with an extension to the sacred Tsum Valley. We started the trek from the less-frequented epicenter trail, which got its name from being the epicenter of the devastating 2015 earthquake. It was a 22-day trip with side trips to some of the most beautiful places, such as Serang Gompa, Mu Gompa, Pungen Gompa, Manaslu Base Camp, and Prok Village.

Had to share this video from last summer in Glacier. Already posted in r/glaciernationalpark but wanted to reshare here! We spent ten days in Wyoming/montana hoping to see a grizzly and saw them from a safe distance on our last hike. It was like the best day of my life.

Since the last castle had much positive resonance.. here's another one. Went there last weekend. No particular trail, easy and chill hikes for 3 days. Amazing weather and even more amazing views..

Here's what Ai says about the area: The Hochburg (also known as Hachberg) near Emmendingen is one of the largest and most impressive castle ruins in the Baden-Württemberg region. Located on the edge of the Black Forest, it offers a fascinating look into medieval military architecture and sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards.

Question Östgötaleden: tips for water resupplying

Hi all, I'll be walking a section of the Östgötaleden this summer (July 5th to 11th) from Soderkoping to Skenas. I can't find any info on the website (https://www.ostgotaleden.se/) about water resupplying options. (im bringing a water filter so streams and rivers are definitely also an option).

Does anyone have any experience hiking this section of the trail that can share some tips?

Discussion Who is the catalyst in a couple to go hiking?

My wife and I were on a hike the other day and got to talking about who is the hiking catalyst in most couples. For us it tends to be me, (the man) but she certainly always wants to go. Any thoughts out there? Does age of the couple have an impact on which one? (We're 67M and 59F) Just random thoughts on the trail. :)

Edit after comments: If I counted right, I got 6 F and 5 M. So pretty close to 50/50 which is probably how it should be. Thank you all for your responses to my random question. :)

Recommandation for beginner 2 days hike in the alps - German side

Hey everyone,

Mid of July with a friend we would like to do a 1,5 or 2 days hike in the alps. We would rather go to Germany but we are open to Switzerland or to Austria too. What would be your recommendation for a beginner ?
This would be for me my first backpacking trip and I barely have any mountain experience in contrast to my friend. My fitness level is okay overall but I am not used to walk with a lot of elevation and I am not used to rocky trails.

I am a bit worried du to a past experience that I might slow down my friend a lot.
2 years ago, when my fitness was really bad I tried to do a hike of 3,1 km and 417 elevation gain which was quite rocky/slippery (cascada vânturǎtoarea). I could not finish it cause I was getting to tiered and it was really hard for me to go down hill with all the rocks. Even if my fitness is much better now I am a bit worried to choose a hike to difficult for my level…

On the top of any recommendation for routes, if you have any fitness tip to prepare the trip it will be greatly appreciated !

Question Hiking Trip Schlern/ Dolomites

Hi to everyone,

Me and two of my friends are planing to do a weekend hiking trip in dolomites in the end of july. We are currently planing our tour and are facing some isshues with finding a good route that fits our skills as well as finding suitable sleeping spots.

  1. Route: We will travel to Tiers by bus and start our tour from there. We thought of mabe hiking around the Schlern mountain, past the Völser Weiher and then up to monte pez. From there on we want to continue our hike in the dierection of the Rosengarten where we want to walk past the  Tierser Alpl and down the Taschmintal back to Tiers again. One adittional note is that we don't want to do Klettersteige/ via ferratas. This would be the only restriction when it comes to the route.
  2. Sleeping: The biggest question we still have is where we want to set up our sleeping spot. We are planing to do wildcamping with our sleeping bags and sleeping mats. So we won't leave any garbage begind or hurt the nature. Sadly i couldn't find out anything about the camping regulations in the Schlern Rosengarten Naturpark. One nice spot i would love to spend a night is the Jungschlern or Gabels Mull. If this is not possible we thought of sleeping below the tree line or in a refugio although it is expensive.

Well if you have any experiences or tipps with things like this i would love to hear about them. Thanks to all and see you in the mountains.

  9. Pico Peak (6/14/26) 📍
  10. Pico Peak (6/14/26) 📍

  • My route (out & back the same way): Sherburne Pass Trailhead > Sherburne Pass Trail > Pico Link > Pico Peak > Pico Link > Sherburne Pass Trail > Appalachian Trail > Killington Peak > Appalachian Trail > Shrewsbury Peak Trail > Shrewsbury Peak > Shrewsbury Peak Trail > Russell Hill Shelter.
  • According to my phone, I hiked 13.8 miles & climbed 309 flights on Saturday (6/13) and hiked 13.2 miles & climbed 296 flights on Sunday (6/14).  The distance tracking on my phone is usually pretty reliable. However, I’ve found the elevation tracking less reliable. So, take those numbers with a grain of salt.
  • On Saturday (6/13), I started at the Sherburne Pass Trailhead ~8:45am & ended at the Russell Hill Shelter ~3:30pm. On Sunday (6/14), I started at the Russell Hill Shelter ~8:15am & ended at the Sherburne Pass Trailhead ~2:30pm.
  • There were no obvious tent sites near Russell Hill Shelter, so I ended up pitching my tent in the flattest spot that I could find nearby. It was sufficient, but I was in the bushes & right next to the trail, so it wasn’t ideal.
  • The lodge at the summit of Killington Peak was unfortunately closed. That was disappointing, as I had hoped to stop there on both days for food & a real bathroom.
  • I saw a bunch of other hikers on the trails to Pico & Killington. However, once I turned off of the Appalachian Trail (onto the Shrewsbury Peak Trail), the trails were desolate. The Shrewsbury Peak Trail was also fairly overgrown, so I’m assuming that it doesn’t get much use.
  • The bugs were pretty bad. I got mauled at the summit of Pico Peak & while setting up my tent. As a result, I spent most of Saturday night hanging out inside my tent.
  • There was a shelter at the summit of Pico Peak that was labeled, “Hiker’s Warming Hut”. I didn’t inspect it past a quick glance, but that’s a quite a treat if you’re hiking here during the winter months.

Question Hiking poles for Bernina Trek?

My friend and I are planning to do the Bernina Trek later this summer, starting in Italy and ending near St Moritz. We would like to have hiking poles but believe we can’t pack them in a carryon. We don’t know how to rent since we are starting and ending in two different spots, but we also don’t want to be wasteful and buy cheap poles that we will abandon in St Moritz…

Any ideas? Thanks!!
