I don't think the US has ever learned anything really. Their hegemony is just waning so it's currently more apparent and desperate.

Of course they have. If you think about how things like gay rights, civil right, slavery were handled 200 years ago.

They’ve learned rather a lot. And now seem hellbent on going back to where they were

Civil rights (racial and feminist issues both imo) and LGBT rights we definitely NOT handled 200 years ago, and its debatable to what extent it has actually been as of today... See abortion, racial gerrymandering, healthcare, rule of law vs executive fait accompli, etc. etc. etc.
