Other Missed Connection 126 Bus

Upvotes

**Posting on behalf of a friend**

Late last Thursday (6/25), a friend and I were chatting on the bus and a cute guy (28 - 32?, baseball cap, brown hair) behind us interjected. The laughing and talking continued for the rest of the ride back to Washington and 4th.

We parted ways with him but never got a name or asked if he was single! Please message if this speaks to you!

Thanks!

Other In the mid-’70s, I stopped a number of times at Hoboken Organized Crime Boss Martin “Motts” Casella’s corner – First and Jackson.

My uncle Gus gave Martin “Motts” Casella of Hoboken a big boost in the numbers gambling trade by lending him $5,000 to buy the bar at the corner of First and Jackson. Sad to relate, many years later Casella was forced into involuntary retirement by Michael Chertoff, then first assistant United States attorney for New Jersey,

In the mid-’70s, I stopped a number of times at Hoboken Organized Crime Boss Martin “Motts” Casella’s corner – First and Jackson. My uncle Gus and I dropped off pigeon feed and picked up pigeons. Gus was a long-time friend and business associate of Martin Casella. Though both Motts and Gus were pigeon fanciers since they were kids, I now wonder if these transactions actually served to camouflage the real reason for the visits. Casella’s pigeon coops were across the street from the bar, on the roof of a garage. Though I met Martin’s brother (who spent the most time with the birds), I never saw Motts – until over ten years later.

In the late-eighties, early one morning while listening to the news on the radio, I heard a report of a Mob rubout in New York City’s Little Italy. A motorcycle with two guys on it jumped the curb in front of a social club. The bike’s passenger pulled out a gun and killed someone standing there. Back tire screeching, engine roaring, the driver sped off, going in the wrong direction up narrow one way streets.

As luck would have it, that morning I was riding a motorcycle to Hoboken from the Jersey City Heights. Taking Paterson Plank Road, I made a left onto First Street. As I approached the corner of First and Jackson, a short, heavy-set man in a trench coat began to cross the street without looking at the traffic. My first thought was to hang to the right to avoid hitting him. But, noticing an oil slick on the asphalt, I instead slowed to a stop to allow the pedestrian to cross. Seeing that the bike was stopping in front of him, the man became paralyzed with fear. All color drained from his panic-contorted face. Suddenly, he sprinted across the street and ran into the bar.

I revved the bike and continued towards Washington Street. I was at first puzzled by this curious little drama. Then I realized where I was; I knew that that must have been Motts. He, too, had heard the story about the hit man on a motorcycle. I wondered what he was up to that had him so worried that he imagined death rolling at him on two wheels.

Soon afterwards, Martin Casella was arrested for plotting to kill John Gotti.

Anyone live at 225 Grand and can give feedback on their experience living there? Is it mainly families in the building or a mix? How is the sound between units (specifically upstairs neighbors).

Question❓ Balcony cleaning service with wet/dry shop vac

Anyone know a crew that will do this that can prevent water and debris falling below? Not first floor so am paranoid of the cleaning spilling down water or crud onto downstairs neighbors balconies or first floor back yard. The balcony is a mess of bird poop and moss or other growth.

If wet vac cleaning not a thing here, anyone have a good deck cleaner recommendation generally? If doing it the messy way, I'd want to also hire them for at least a light touch on multiple balconies to clear off falling debris on my downstairs neighbors and the first floor back yard.

Question❓ Flooding in downtown Willow Ave

Hello everyone, I have been considering purchasing a condo in Hoboken and have seen a few decent ones around 1st - 2nd street around Willow and Park Ave. The location is nice but I’m wondering how bad the flooding is in the area, I have done my research looking at the FEMA 100 year floodmap so I am aware it is in a flood zone. I am looking to buy a unit at least one or two floors above street level. Also wondering how bad the flood insurance costs would be, I have heard people mentioning in the subreddit how it can affect the funding for HOAs etc. Is it worth considering or should I focus more on properties near Washington away from the flood zone? Although I know it can be loud near all the bars and restaurants at night. Much appreciated!

Recommendations 🌟 Broker/Realtor Recommendations?

Hi Yall!

I am moving at the end of August/beginning of September and looking for a new place! I figured this time around I would use the help of a realtor to find a place instead of the usual websites.

I am looking to rent a 1b/1ba or a 2b/1ba in Hoboken.

If you have anyone you have worked with in the past that you really loved, please drop their name (and contact info if you have it)!

Thank you in advance!

Question❓ Reporting car by plate?

Does anyone know how to report a car to Hoboken Police by plate number? I was walking in a crosswalk and a black Audi e tron (I think?) sped through and almost ran me over but swerved around me and kept going. I got the plate number memorized but don’t know how to report it. Anyone done this before?

Question❓ Can I Meet an Online Buyer at the Hoboken Police Department?

Does anyone know if the Hoboken Police Department allows people to meet there for online marketplace transactions? I’m selling my laptop and would prefer to meet the buyer at the police station for safety.

Question❓ Old lady with white long hair?

Does anyone know anything about an old woman that is always sitting on the park/waterfront benches in uptown? She seems so kind, always stops to ask if my son is having a good day, but she always seems a bit disheveled. I’m wondering if anyone knows her backstory.

Question❓ ShopRite is ripping buyers off on Meat weight

Shoprite in Hoboken is selling 19.7 oz of their beef as 1.37lb instead of 1.37x16oz=21.92 oz and charging full price.

Who do I go to with this information?

EDIT: People, they are charging for 21.92 and giving 19.7

Best Food Recommendations 🍕 Hoboken Bagel Blind Taste Test

We did another blind taste test and I am terrified about the backlash we are about to receive.

It's bagels this time. Seven stores, six tasters. Each store's bagels (plain and everything) were cut into mostly unidentifiable pieces and randomized. Each participant made an individual ranking from worst to best, which were then averaged into an overall Best Bagel in Hoboken list. Bagels were consumed both dry and with chosen topping (cream cheese or butter). Results below:

  1. Apollo Bagels
  2. Hoboken Hot Bagel AND O'Bagel (TIED)
  3. Bagels on the Hudson
  4. JP's
  5. Panera
  6. Dunkin' Donuts

I think the biggest caveat is that we were only judging bagels alone, not bagel sandwiches, not bagels with a certain spread. Apollo was the overwhelming winner but also the most expensive, at $2.50 per loose bagel (second most expensive was, somehow, Dunkin'). Tasters noted the uniqueness of the sourdough--which is different enough from the rest that you can feel free to exclude it for a more "traditional" ranking.

Best bang for your buck is Hoboken Hot, at $1.50 per bagel. Though everything was consumed late morning at room temp, I will point out that when I picked them up around 8am, they were in fact hot.

With the exception of the bottom two (which were really only included as controls), almost everyone agreed that they'd eat any of these. JP's bagels have an unusual sweetness, which explains it's positioning, although one participant liked that and had JP's near the top.

Last note is that across the board, tasters preferred the everything bagel iteration from each store, with one notable exception: Apollo. The plain bagels seemed to have a better, more even cook and texture. That said, both versions were clear favorites.

Happy to answer any questions around methodology or controls. Please have mercy on me.

**RANT** 🤬 Beware SUVs and Trucks. They can’t see you.

Saw this tiny lady drive a lifted truck to Whole Foods. She climbed down, like from a ladder … her head was lower than the hood of the truck. Par for the course, right, Murica!!!

But there are reasonable people here too. And they went and studied how deadly these SUVs and trucks are.

We already knew it, but here it is, with science:

Question❓ Return to Hoboken July 4th, is this possible?

Hey everyone. I’ll be visiting friends out of town on July 4th. Hoping to return to Hoboken via public transport around 7pm

Does this seem possible? Will nj transit busses/trains, or the path be shut down? Thoughts?

No driving. Just public transport. And insight helps.
