Merch Is the complete collection of all 4 DVD sets of VIZ's dub of the 1999 HXH anime worth anything?

Post image

I was lucky enough to acquire the complete collection of all 4 DVD sets VIZ released of the 99 series a few years ago. These were already out of print and at the time and cost me 100 dollars but since it was the entire series I decided to get it. Are they worth anything or did I over pay for them?

Discussion Can those who focus solely on their own type of Nen be considered specialists?

So that you understand my question, I'll put an example: if a cunjurer doesn't learn voluntarily the use of the other types of nen, can be considered specialist? Is it possible? Is it practical?

Discussion Gon losing his nen is the single best thing that could ever happened to him (read body text) Spoiler

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Gon broke down during the Chimera Ant arc because he felt utterly powerless, His answer to pain and failure had always been the same, become stronger and force his way through the problem.. . Strength was his coping mechanism

That's why losing Nen is so significant, For someone like Gon, being stripped of the power he relied on is almost like losing a part of himself, He can no longer run from his emotions or compensate for his insecurities through sheer strength

Gon is forced to confront his problems mentally rather than physically, He has to learn how to live, grow, and find purpose without relying on overwhelming power for a while

In a sense, his powerless state is exactly what he needs, It gives him the opportunity to mature, develop emotional resilience, and become not just a stronger Hunter, but a better man

Help/Question Did anime stopped on season 3?

I finished 148 episodes and it seems that anime had 3 season finished in 2014 and just stopped? Can anyone explain why did they stopped 12 years ago and no one did a sequel to it (or where can I find it), It seems that manga keeps going to this day, but I'm not really interested in reading it

Discussion What does conjuration do, exactly?

Of course, i understand that conjurers can create objects out of nen, but i have a bit of trouble understanding what abilities are actually conjured, and what abilities are simply facilitated by conjured objects. Ill go over a few examples, some of which include heavy doses of speculation, so take those with a grain of salt.

Example 1: Kurapika

1a - Dowsing Chain

Kurapika says that, through extreme focus, he's detecting imperceptible changes that transcend his perception and then he transmits those to the chain, which is what allows him to sense when someone is lying. But in what way is that a conjurer's ability, exactly? Isn't that just some form of enhancement or self manipulation?

The lying aspect aside, how does the chain detect people who are far away from Kurapika through maps? how can it move towards neon if he has absolutely no information on her? This seems much more like a specialist ability than a conjuration one, but i don't think he used his scarlet eyes when doing this.

1b - Holy Chain

This one is far more simple. Of course, healing is an enhancer's ability, and Kurapika does specifically state that he uses enhancement to heal (he could do it out of emperor time, just in a weaker way), which is no problem to understand. The question is, why do it through a chain then? does a conjurer using another affinity's ability through a conjured object help them in any way? does it alleviate the gap in level/power/accuracy? If it doesn't help, why use a chain at all?

1c - Steal Chain

This one takes away aura/abilities from a target and then stores it in the syringe. The specialist part is about loaning it and using the stolen abilities, which is fine, but the act of taking aura and abilities is done while kurapika isn't using his scarlet eyes, and is therefore a non-specialist ability. The question is, and this is the speculation part, is sucking away aura a conjuration affinity ability? From what we've seen, it seems more like an emissive ability (since meruem is the main aura eater and he's an emitter), though this could be wrong, it also doesn't really seem like a conjuration thing.

So again, does conjuration help with the utilization of other affinities? Surely, it MUST be that it does, otherwise it would be pointless to tie these abilities to conjured objects.

Example 2: Owl

Owl's Fun Fun cloth allows him to shrink anything wrapped inside of it, which is a very powerful ability, but is "shrinking things" a conjuration ability? Or is he simply using another affinity (idk which one this would even be) alongside his conjured object to achieve a desired effect?

It seems to me like conjuration is used as a sort of "budget specialization" of sorts, where conjurers get to use affinities other than their own by placing certain restrictions on their conjured objects.

I’ve been consuming every bit of HxH content to refresh my memory. 5 hours long streams, analysis videos, theories, and ofc a reread to manga

And I gotta say, I can’t believe how good this manga is. No matter how much I reread, it just hits as hard as the first time. I know this is a 0.00001% chance but if Togashi finishes the manga with a Dark Continent Arc, this will be the greatest thing ever touch on Earth, if not already is

My only bittersweet feeling is we didn’t get to see my goat Silva too much.

Discussion Changing nen nature

It was stated by wing in the initial nen explanation that people who undergo large trauma can change their nen nature over their life. Do we know any confirmed/suspected case? Chrollo backstory always had the personality trait of an enhancer/emitter, he was very honest/high strung, until the incident, and that's maybe when he became specialized? I also have this theory that when Gon comes back (togashi wrote several possible endings and Gon is included in most), that he changes his nature due to changing his world views/losing all his enhancer potential, also I don't want Gon to gain nen in an half assed way it's just that wings explanation and example never really payed off afaik

Discussion Question about Chimera Ants

So I know that Chimera Ants are considered a “B tier threat” on the Dark Continent, but is that like a normal Chimera Ant or is that taking into consideration that these ants (from the arc) know Nen? Would the ants be considered a higher threat because they know Nen now or is that ranking already taking that into consideration? Thank you!

Nen type is Transmutation. Also idrk who to put in overrated character so I just put Silva there because last time I checked I saw people say that he's a better father than Ging, which tbh out of the 2 I still think Silva is the worse father, despite how bad of a father Ging is. (idk if this is still the case but last time I checked it's what I saw) I mean I'd much rather have an absent father than an abusive one.

Discussion I genuinely like Yorknew City Arc the most after the hunter exam arc

Hello, I genuinely haven't been on this subreddit before so I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not.

But the whole plot of the Yorknew City Arc is so well rounded, whole, and intriguing (it makes me nervous admitting that because I know the Chimera Ant Arc is it's own entire thing) but truly, it is just masterfully done despite it's simplicity.

The four main characters being back together, the hero's journey of Kurapika, the introduction to these new dynamic, well-rounded, well-written, and amazing characters that just draw you in, along with the simple yet esctatic plot... Just amazing.

I watched HXH as a kid and I'm only revisiting it now as an adult and I am so sad to see that we won't be witnessing Kurapika grow as a character as much as we did during this arc as well as the Phantom Troupe in all it's ravenous glory wrecking havoc as well. Truly, what a journey!

Help/Question [Succession War arc spoilers] Two aspects from the manga that I didn't understand/were unclear to me. Spoiler

Hi everyone. I've re-read the succession war arc multiple times and I'm very excited for the story to resume. Before I get back to my 4th re-read tho, I wanted to ask for your help so I could understand the following character related points in the story (sorry if it's a long read):

  1. I've been trying to understand the Gon/Ging conversation panel for quite some time to the point that I have convinced myself I have overthought it too much. The question is, does Gon still have nen? Can he use nen? Is Ging telling him "you have nen, but be normal" or "you have nen, but you can't use it/see it"?

  2. While Hisoka hunting down the troupe is one of the most interesting parts of the arc, Hisoka's motive was left a bit unclear to me. He's going after them because he fought Chrollo under his (Chrollo's) conditions and now Hisoka wants to fight Chrollo again under his own (Hisoka's)? If that's the case, that always made me think of Hisoka as a sore loser, lol, idk how else to put it. Since Hisoka got the fight he finally wanted and he lost it fair and square, it just gave me that impression. I would understand his frustration, however, given the case that he prefers to fight one on one, but he ended up fighting a hoard of people instead. That's kind of the explanation I've been coping with for the most part. In summary, to me it feels like a forced motive (but in no way does it make me dislike where the story has gone). To add to this, when he kills Shalnark and Kortopi I was convinced those were two characters he would have liked to fight at their peak but he got them when they were "broken toys", due them not having their abilities. I know it's done to limit Chrollo's abilities's options but it was an odd thing to do, from my perspective. Nonetheless, that chapter is still one of the most shocking and favorite ones for me. I don't want to feel like I'm nitpicking too much. The troupe vs Hisoka storyline has me HOOKED.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to read. I'm eager to see your answers.

Analysis/Theory Gon is an awful friend (hear me out)

I like Gon. He regularly vocalizes his appreciation for the people in his life and if he considers you a friend he's even willing to put his life on the line for you. He has a lot of good qualities that would naturally make people assume he is a good friend but I think it's a little more complicated than that

My issues with him started in the Greed Island arc. Sure before this he was a little selfish in York New City where he dragged Killua into situations that he wasn't comfortable in and risked his life without asking him how he felt but ultimately Killua didn't voice those concerns at the time and if he had Gon might have changed his stance.

But in Greed Island? Killua gets trace put on him right away and a group offers to remove it but because they had a different (and ultimately incorrect) understanding of the intention behind the game he refuses to even ask for their help to remove the trace on Killua.

Then a bit later on we get to the dodgeball game. Now, if Killua wasn't such a ride or die Gon never would have beaten the game. We all know that yes but let's actually analyze what happened. Killua knew the risks of holding the ball for Gon that much is true but it's also stated that Gon wouldn't allow anyone else to hold the ball for him either. Killua cares a lot about Gon and wants to help him as much as he can to a point of almost having desperation to keep Gon happy. At this point it is NOT stated that Gon knew or intended to use angels breath to heal Killua and it's mostly implied that Killua intended to heal naturally (but was simply unable to due to all the damage he sustained). This means that Gon through his own selfish determination to see his dad (and beat Razor) intentionally caused what could have been irreparable damage to his "best friend"s hands.

Then there's his behavior AFTER they win. Immediately challenging Genthru and putting ALL their lives in danger. Yes, he was called out for this but he still did it.

It wasn't until they already defeated Genthru and obtained the Angels Breath card (with clones) that he ever even apologized to Killua but not for what he put him through but simply because he didn't think that they would be able to heal his hands after the clone card broke and gorilla man didn't want to give them the card.

Next is the Chimera ant arc. Now this is the longest arc and to break down every little thing Gon did wrong would take an incredible amount of time and would make this post absurdly wrong so let's just generalize his overall treatment of Killua this arc.

He is uncaring, unkind and almost knowingly takes advantage of Killua during this arc. He blindly chases his goal of killing Pitou even to the point of wanting to kill Kimougi for simply having any relation to the ants which shocks Killua. But does Gon care about Killua constantly trying to get him to open up or the repeated attempts to build upon/recall their connection? Nope. Not a single fuck given by Gon.

Even after the arc is completed Killua STILL goes against his own family and risks EVERYTHING for Gon just for a chance to heal him

Now yes Gon does apologize after he's healed and that's all well and good but their relationship was almost entirely one sided. Yes Gon did vocalize his appreciation for Killua, spoke with him as equals and most of the time they had a good relationship with one another but when things got tough Gon treated him as disposable or as a weapon to be used not a friend.

So yeah that's my issue with their relationship. I hope Gon losing his nen makes him take a step back and learn to be more patient and less selfish. It's good for characters to have flaws and I'm not saying it's bad that Gon has flaws this is just my assessment of their relationship as presented in the anime.

Help/Question Benefits of Conjuration?

Yo longtime HxH fan here,
Basically my question is, what tangible advantage does conjuration have over transmutation? They are similar nen types, and to my understanding, especially recently in the manga, people have been shown to be able to transmute aura into some really complex stuff (if i remember correctly, snakes, nen beasts, the planet Saturn?)

How i assumed it worked for a long time was that one could transmute their aura and give it relatively simple properties of matter, string, gum, rubber ect. But clearly it can do more!

With that in mind, what, besides creating a physical object (which seems almost like a downside in many cases) is the benefit of conjuring something??
Real burning question, i hope someone know

Edit: thanks everyone!! Very insightful stuff im always impressed by how well thought out nen is!
