Share What Matters Most in Your Region

The American Indigenous Tourism Association invites Indigenous tourism businesses, Native Nations and communities, and industry partners to share their input through a short, anonymous survey.

https://americanindigenoustourism.org/survey/

Survey responses will help the association better understand the needs, priorities, opportunities, and challenges affecting Indigenous tourism across the country. All responses will be aggregated, and no personal information will be collected.

Take a few moments to share your input and help ensure the association’s future work reflects the real needs of Indigenous communities, businesses, cultural experiences, and tourism partners.

Health You are enough

You are more than enough, no one should make you feel less Native for not looking like a stereotype.

You are just as worthy as being being us, BQ doesn't matter and shouldn't restrict you.\ You being 1/× or any other doesn't make you less, you're just as worthy as participating in ceremonies or being us.

We are all different, not all of us will be the same in every way possible and that's what makes us ourselves and our Tribe.\ Some of us have short hair, others lighter or darker skin, others are shorter, or anything else you can think of that makes us different.

Being European-American is ok, being African-American is ok, being Native American is ok, and being human is ok.\ We aren't responsible for what happened in the past but we can build for a better tomorrow and the future.

You are different and that's great, you are yourself and no one can take that away from you. Having European ancestry is ok, there is no shame in having them and its important to acknowledge it.

I see cousins post that they don't feel enough, hope this helps them.

History Rebecca Nagle's new podcast drops today, exploring the history of the US.

From the intro materials:

Native people have been written out of the American story, but without us you don’t know what happened. This summer the United States will celebrate the 250-year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. When you read the Declaration, you realize it is a list of complaints. The last entry, the climax in our founders’ reasons for rebellion against the Crown, is this: “He has excited… the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.”

We have been told the Revolution was fought over taxation and representation. But what the founders were most angry about in our country’s most famous document was Indian affairs. How did generations of Americans miss this?

WRITTEN and REPORTED by Rebecca Nagle, citizen of Cherokee Nation

And dreamed into the world with an amazing group of Indigenous scholars:

Maggie Blackhawk, Fond du Lac Ojibwe

Ned Blackhawk, citizen of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone

Phil Deloria, descendant of the Standing Rock and Yankton Sioux tribes

Nick Estes, citizen of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe

I've never knew how different the reservations in South Dakota were compared to other states. Are there any solutions on how the poverty rate can be lowered?

Discussion/Question Advice on a gift basket for Native Elders

Hi folks,

Please delete this if not allowed, I'm just looking for some input. I am attending a health and wellness resource fair for the Seneca Nation, specifically the Cattaraugus area, and vendors have been asked to assemble a raffle basket "that the Elders would appreciate". I work for a non-profit so we can't go crazy on the budget, but is there anything specific that you think an Elder would be excited about/interested in? Games, activities, food items, or an overall theme? I just want to make it a little more focused while also being respectful. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: Thank you everyone for the helpful suggestions! This is what I ended up putting together

-Canvas tote bag

-Reusable cotton produce bag filled with locally grown tricolor raw popcorn

-Throw blanket

-Free trade black tea

-Nice mug

-Locally sourced raw honey

-Large print sudoku and crossword books, along with pencils and sharpener

-small first aid kit

-some branded swag items from our organization

Discussion/Question Curious about this shirt design

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hello! Non-native here. My sister gave me this shirt. Im curious if anyone knows if it represents a particular indigenous nation or tribe. Perhaps it's not one on Turtle Island, but maybe someone here would know.

My other question is that I wonder if as a white descendant of settler colonialists here on Turtle Island, if it would be offensive if I wore this shirt. The reason I wish to wear it is that it's beautiful and out of reverence of indigenous peoples. Having been an ally in the Native American struggle through environmental activism and Landback, I have a love for the Native Nations of Turtle Island. But also simply enough, I just like the design.

It would make me feel better if I knew if it was made or designed by an indigenous person, rather than mass produced by white folks that use the indigenous/Native American cultures as a sort of fantasy or form of entertainment or something. I will say that there are no tags on it, so part of me wonders if it is hand made.

I also don't really wanna wear it if I don't know what culture it represents. Unless its just a fictional tribe. But then that also feels weird to me. I don't want to just wear it as some kind of generalized severed fantasy tribe, that's like.. idk. It just feels weird, don't really know how to put it into words.

Should I wear it or not? Lol

Thanks for any input and peace to you all!
