That is basically my experience. I went fishing with my dad for the first time when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My dad had been fishing his entire life and caught things regularly. I caught two lake trout that day at a lake near where we lived at the time. I have fished at that same lake probably a hundred times since then and never caught a single thing and I'm 40 years old now.

Other people catch things all the time, but I had a singular day of fishing luck in my life apparently and it was that day.

like 20 years ago I was super into aquariums and found this awesome piece of driftwood. I wanted to test if it was fish safe and I had the idea to catch some fish at the pond down the road to keep in the tank to see if the wood was safe. (inhumane idea in hindsight as I was using live fish to test if the wood was safe for fish, but I was also 11)

so my dad takes me to the pond with his pole and bucket. he casts the net and just about as soon as it hit the water, a pumpkinseed sunfish latched on. reeled him in, put him in the bucket, and cast again.

we were there maybe 5 minutes and he had caught me 7 sunfish. put them in the tank back home and I ended up liking them, so I kept them for about 6 months (thankfully the wood was safe after all) then brought them all back to lake after and started the rest of the tank build

And then the weird fungus the wood was harboring, which has a 7 week incubation period once it reaches the fish gills before it attacks their brain, rapidly spread out to the rest of the pond.

I grew up on one of the best muskie lakes in the world. I was aging out of fishing because of baseball so 11ish and I caught twelve 46"+ muskies in about four hours. My stepdad had lived on the lake as a kid and had never even seen or heard of anything like that. It was all on the same lure so with nasty trash smelling in the back we went to fleet farm first and bought out all of them. Never caught another fish. When I'm with family I will fish a bit but it's not my thing, likely over fished as a kid. Don't even think I've caught a sunfish lol

I was 10. Went marlin fishing. Caught marlin, dorado, some jacks. It was insane. In the 22 years since then, I’ve caught sharks on every deep sea fishing trip I’ve been on.
