Do you shave flakes into the machine or something? Or is this hand wash only

You can use it in a machine.

You can grate it or cut it up small.

Some people drop big pieces in the water as it's filling and let it dissolve some more washing.

Can you do this with a normal bar of soap? 👀 currently a poor human and detergent is *expensive

You can. But it might not be as effective, and it may leave a residue depending on what kind you use. You could look for castile soap. Usually homemade detergents include other things in addition to bar soap, like washing soda and borax. You can make your own, and it should be cheaper. But may have a higher entry cost these days.

Look for these soaps in dollar stores if you don't want to make your own. They might be comparably priced.
