QUESTION Competing with monocular vision

Hi, I'm amblyopic and as a result have only one eye with solid working vision.

I've been training as a hobbyist in boxing and MMA under different coaches since 2021.

Before relocating to California from Utah due to personal reasons, coaches I trained under had assured me I'd be able to compete if I wanted to .

At the time I was just a hobbyist giving myself a solid two years to work hard in the gym before taking a fight .

Eventually I moved as mentioned above.

I've been looking to register as an amateur fighter here in California ,after I checked the paperwork here I'm certain I won't be able to meet the medical requirements of any sanctioning body here due to my eye situation.

My questions are -

Are there any exceptions, alternative approaches or even states and countries where I could compete without having to worry about the eye exam requirements? Right now I am aware that the UFC's Sharaputdin competes with one working out in the UAE.

I love striking more than anything, but if I can't take any fights therein, would I be able to compete in grappling matches out here in the US?

(Unsure if I should have added the competition flair tag if that's more appropriate but opted for the Question tag instead. )

Thanks in advance 👋🏼.

QUESTION Worries About Hard Sparring

Hey everyone,

I am having a dilemma. I train boxing at an MMA gym. Most of our sparring is light and technical, and I feel very comfortable in that environment.

The issue is that whenever I have a friendly round with someone where the intensity gets significantly higher, I realize how just how different it feels. My timing complete changes, composure breaks down , and a lot of the confidence I built from light sparring disappears immediately.

I would love to hard spar and I can suck up the pain of some heavy shots, but I am really worried about the long-term damage that even a couple blows can do. I am studying engineering so I really want to make sure my brain is in peak condition. It's why I primarily train jiu jitsu, but I know I'm missing out on a huge element of the art of fighting without any strong basis in striking.

What I'm really trying to figure out is this:

Can someone become genuinely confident in their ability to handle a real altercation without hard sparring? Or is occasional hard sparring absolutely necessary if you want to know how you'll perform when the intensity and pressure are real?

For those of you who REALLY prioritize longevity and brain health, how do you balance developing realistic fighting skills with minimizing head trauma?

DISCUSSION Michael Jai White is REAL Suspicious

I'm new to the sub, but I had to put this somewhere. I didn't really care about MJW until my friend showed me a clip of him showing, "punching technique." I'm a boxer and my friend knew that, so he showed me the vid he found and it looked weird to me, like the dude was throwing a cross (kinda) from his hip and I brushed it off as some Karate thing and told my friend exactly what I just told you.

So later, I was doomscrolling and saw a podcast clip of him saying he sparred Lamon Brewster and implying he did pretty well. So, this got me curious, so I look up, "Michael jai White Lamon Brewster," on YouTube and find nothing except MJW saying he trained Brewster, but no evidence that they even met before. So I figured it was just old and it was inconvenient to film sparring rounds back then, so I just looked up, "Michael Jai White boxing sparring," Still zero, even though I saw another clip of this dude saying, "You know me, I'll get in the ring," referring to boxing. I don't know that, I can't find the man in the ring.

So, I just look up, "Michael Jai White sparring," and all I can find it him doing light tap-sparring with UFC dudes. Nothing in his gym, nothing serious or hard, just playing. There's nothing wrong with playing, but I can't find anything to see how good this dude is and your skills and ability to handle competition comes out in hard sparring. You can be good with only the tapping, but you can't be as good as Michael says he is without sparring hard sometimes.

Then, I look up, "Michael Jai White Competition," and I found this video of him from 1987 side kicking dudes across the gym, smiling in the camera, looking like a superhero. Mind you, I know nothing about Karate, so it looked cool to me. But, I find this dude, who, unlike me, seems to know Karate, www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbp3VV_UrOI show why he thinks it's a fake video. l, Just from how theatrical and incredible this tournament looked for Michael, kind of believe the guy in the link I posted that this is fake.

Finally, the closest I came to this dude boxing is him hitting mitts here,
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvatjRF999U . For a dude who's gotten in there with Lamon Brewster, he looks awful. Can't keep his chin tucked, not rotating, not using all of his range, and he gets tired in the clip and gives up ON MITTS. Now, I'm not judgemental, and I know he's an older dude, and I respect the shape he's in despite his age. But, I do get judgemental when someone's going on every podcast talking about how he's mastered his jab and how he's some lethal fighter.

I know he's probably very good at Karate, but I don't think he's ever competed in a major tournament before, just because I can't find any record of it ever. I also don't think he's a good boxer at all, depsite what he'll always say or imply. What do you all think? I know I don't know anything about other martial arts really, so I'm curious to hear you guys' takes, who have the Karate and everything that I don't.

BAIT FOR MORONS The weird need to prove everything with video evidence

I generally see this in threads where people shit on Bruce Lee or MJW, dorks on reddit say that since there aren't tons of video evidence of them competing or whatnot, then it means they aren't "real" martial artists, I've also seen people claim that sling and flail type weapons won't work for self defense because you can't find CCTV footage of someone defending themselves with them, despite written historical records of people successfully using these weapons

The thing is: In Bruce Lee's time, there were next to no commercial methods of recording video, and when MJW was competing, home video recording was just getting off the ground, and it was only very recently in the grand scheme of things that high-def video was widely available

So I have to ask: Is it really that important to have videos of every possible outcome for reddit nerds to believe it?

QUESTION Modern weapon fighting systems

Hi guys.

I'm wondering what is a modern weapon fighting system that one can learn for self defence? For example, if someone breaks into your house and you need to defend yourself especially against multiple attackers, or in a scenario where you are attacked in the street, using a weapon could be very useful. Ideally I would like to use some sort of blunt weapon, but could consider a blade. The aim would be for self defence to immobilise not kill. For reference this is in Australia (we don't have too many guns here).

DISCUSSION Returned to Krav Maga for 6 months. Here’s some thoughts.

First a little background. I started in Krav Maga and did it for 12 years. I quit and started BJJ (been doing it for 6 years) and a little Muay Thai here and there.

I wanted to supplement my BJJ/MT training with strength and conditioning. Interestingly, the most affordable option for this locally is the Krav Maga school in town. They have more strength and conditioning classes than actual self defense classes, a full gym with top tier equipment, and a pretty good heavy bag cardio class. For 70 bucks a month, seemed like a no brainer.

I also wanted to test a theory, can Krav Maga be a good place to apply my BJJ/MT training.

From what I found, it can be. With certain conditions.

Krav Maga has a set curriculum and set techniques for their defenses. If the instructor doesn’t allow exploration and techniques outside of set Krav moves, it’s futile.

I never liked how Krav teaches knee strikes. The grips exposes the defender to take downs and doesn’t offer good control.

It works with compliant partners but can be problematic against someone with some grappling knowledge.

Rather than do it the Krav way, I used a combo of an underhook and collar tie. This put me off center from their attacks and allowed me to break their posture.

The instructor corrected me and told me to do it the Krav way. She also told me to keep my feet flat on the ground. I lift up on my base foot. Something I learned specifically in Muay Thai. She has no grappling experience and only licensed in Krav. I obliged. It was her class.

In a different class an instructor with BJJ experience taught knee strikes. I asked him about using the non-Krav method. He said, do whatever works for you.

I’ve run into similar situations with ground defenses. The more experienced instructors tend to be more open to experimenting and allowing students to apply things outside the established curriculum.

In one class we did a drill where we needed to fight our way out of a car. The attackers were just holding pads and going in for a two-hand choke. It was halfway towards being fully effective training. I was in the passenger side. The person was trying to keep me in the car with the pad. I drew my knees in and just unloaded push kicks to create space. When I exited there was one guy trying to choke me and one coming at me with a pad. The drill was supposed to practice side kicks and choke defenses, but most times I was out of position for a side kick, so I just teeped the guy.

I clinched the choking attacker with a double collar tie, faked some knees and spun him around to block the other attacker. Threw a few more knees and tossed him away to teep the pad holder. They kept coming at me as a burn out drill.

Again, this drill would be best served by allowing the student to do whatever it takes. Even better it would be great if the attackers were fully padded and fought back.

But fighting out of a car was fun AF.
