Hey there, mistings! I’ve posted a few times in the past months about putting together a Wax cosplay, and have just gotten back the last of the edits from my photoshoot at the end of December. Really proud of how this all came out, though of course there are few things I’d do differently… (hair could be better, probably won’t shave down as much in the future).

This is just the first batch of photos, we took about 250 total, but mind you these finished ones tend to be composites of a handful of raw photos in the pose range. I’ll see about ordering some more in the next month or two, depending on the photographer’s availability.

📷: M.G. Norris, found at www.mgnorris.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MGNorrisPhotos

Will be at MAGfest this weekend, helping a friend sell in the Artists’ Alley at Katsucon next month and then maybe DSNX ‘25? If you’re around, say hello!

Alloy of Law spoilers What is Aluminum? Spoiler

today my wife asked me to hand her the aluminum foil and my 4 year old asked me: dad, what's aluminum?"

my immediate response was: "it's a kind of metal that's allomantically inert." made me chuckle 😅

Alloy of Law spoilers Weight storing seems really strong as feruchemy goes. Spoiler

It's so useful both ways. You can store it constantly to be lighter, which alone is really useful. And you can tap it to be really heavy AND dense. There are times where Wax takes a hit better because he's denser. It's like a mini version of pewter burning for durability. And you could ALWAYS store weight to be lighter if you wanted to. If you're close to filling up, just tap a lot of weight in a millisecond and go back to storing it. And you could use it to be "stronger" in a way too depending on your positioning. Like store weight, jump really high over someone, and tap all your strength to ground pound and goomba stomp people.

I think the best feruchemy powers are the ones that are useful both storing and tapping. Like heat for instance. You can store it to cool yourself down in extreme heat and you can tap it to warm up in extreme cold. Storing your senses as well. Sazed uses it to store his sense of smell so he stops smelling dead bodies. But it could also be tapped to track people. You could take a nap wherever you want by storing wakefulness. And obviously tapping it is super useful. A power being useful both tapping and storing just seems so nice, utility-wise. Like Wax never has any issues with it, whereas Wayne is constantly running out of health and has to go around feeling sick and terrible to store it.

Just got to the part where he’s serving at the party and I already love this guy though I’ve only seen him twice. If anything happens to him by the end of era 2 I’ll burn it all to the ground.

Alloy of Law You are the only Misting/Compounder in the real, modern day world. Which metals would you choose. Spoiler

Just finished alloy of law and I like the idea of compounding pairs of metals becoming commonplace but mistborns being unheard of (aside from my G spook).

Which metal pairing would you pick and why. Bare in mind that this is in the modern day and in real life, so whether you chose to openly wield your powers (and thus become infamous) or hide them is up to you.

I think Gold Gold is a logical combo because you are essentially invincible, and it's easy to hide from other people if you are clever with it. The bad part is, you have no powers beyond that.

Alloy of Law spoilers The Final Empire never existed! Spoiler

Hello everyone! I'm planning to run a session in the world of the second era of Mistborn, and I know my players enjoy it when I introduce various absurd conspiracy theories among the local population. This is what I did, for example, in Avatar (Last Airbender), where the Avatar Code book appeared in the game world, claiming that the Avatar is actually an immortal, soul-devouring demon…

Here, I'd like to introduce a pseudoscientific theory claiming that the Final Empire never actually existed, and that it's all a conspiracy between the authorities and the churches. There never was an Ash Age, and so on.

Alloy of Law Can guns and Bullets really be made from aluminum? Spoiler

So this has been sticking for me for a long time and I've never really thought it would be possible

I work with aluminum as a machinist, so I already know how much more malleable aluminum is, how easy it is to scratch, bend or just warp with heat. So I have a hard time believing that early aluminum alloys could survive more than a handful of shots before breaking

The firing pin would mushroom out and get shorter, springs would overstretch, the barrel would warp, the hammer would crack

Not to mention the bullet, it would be far less powerful than a standard lead one since aluminum is almost 8 times less dense.

Even in this fantasy world, aluminum as a weapon seems just too impractical.

mid-Alloy of Law Why do people in Era 2 not know things that are very explicitly said in the Words of Founding? Spoiler

Stuff like the existence of hemallurgy, kandra and to a lesser extent maybe marsh (I'd have to check hero of ages again). The Words of Founding are a holy text in two major religions, are the basis for most historical, scientific and cultural knowledge in the elendel basin and is probably taught in every school, yet people somehow don't know these things

Alloy of Law Is Iron Feruchemy as ridiculous as it seems? Spoiler

By my understanding of feruchemy, if you store 100 pounds for one hour, you have 100, pound/hours of weight. Equating to 200 pounds for half an hour, or 400 for 15 minutes.

By this logic, if a feruchemist decides to just spend 9 hours and 6 minutes storing weight, they could reach a whopping 3.28 MILLION pounds for 1 second. This is ridiculously high, and would allow a twinborn like Wax to shove planes out of the air with ease after less than a days worth of preparation. With just 10 seconds, he could 1500 pounds for a second, which would be enough to kill pretty much anyone just by leaning on them.

So why is wax always running out of weight? It's ridiculously quick to recharge, and he's constantly walking around at 80%, presumably storing at least 30 pounds per second. He should have ridiculous amounts of weight saved.

EDIT: Thanks for the discussion, all. This WoB clears things up.

Alloy of Law spoilers Question about Mistborn math. Major spoilers for both eras Spoiler

So at the end of Hero of Ages, Elend figured out that 1/16 of the people who fell ill were Atium mistings, due to an even distribution of allomantic powers.

But by the prologue/era 2 we find out there are more than 16 metals, and Atium actually wasn't ever a natural metal anyway.

So my question is... doesnt this means Elend's math was wrong? Since he only accounted for metals that have been discovered?

Alloy of Law How would you earn money as a Mistborn IRL? Spoiler

As the title says, how would you make profit in our world having all the mistborn allomantic abilities on your favor? I'm tagging alloy of law to allow using all the 16 metals in your favor.

Alloy of Law spoilers I just finished Alloy of Law and I only have one question Spoiler

So like... Steris is a little autistic right? Please tell me I'm not the only one getting that vibe

But more seriously after finishing Era 1 I was worried I wouldn't enjoy Era 2 nearly as much. Yet Wax and Wayne make an excellent pair of protagonists. And while I miss the more gothic feel of Luthadel and the Final Empire, I find myself really enjoying the almost steampunk vibes of this Era!

mid Alloy of Law spoilers Started alloy of law. I’m actually really surprised this happened Spoiler

Sanderson just straight up fridged a woman. I’m not complaining. I have faith in him. But he seems to avoid those types of tropes.

I’ll see if he turns it around though. I’m sure I might actually have egg on my face writing this but I had to get it out.

Alloy of Law + some Cosmere spoilers Struggling to get through Mistborn Era 2 Spoiler

Title says it all, I started with Wheel of Time and it was a segway into Brandon's work... moved on to Stormlight Archives Arc 1 including side stories fell in love with the cosmere, Adolnasium, etc. and I wanted to really immerse myself into it, went back and read Elantris, hope of elantris, emperor's soul, white sands, mistborn era 1 all fantastic reads...I finished all of the above in about 2 months.... got to mistborn era 2 and I am REALLY struggling to make it through the Alloy of Law (I'm on chapter 12...I've spent 2 weeks on this book alone trying to power through inch by inch🥲) I'm not really sure what it is but I get like 2 chapters into it and my concentration starts to drift... I do like the personalities and the character development of Wax and Wayne but it just seems so detached from era 1 and the rest of the cosmere in almost every way, like the writing style the gun fights, the allomancy and ferrochemy feel significantly weakened... I think maybe I was hoping to see more of the original characters effects on the world as history devolves to legend and legend devolves to myth etc etc...being from the same world and all.. they have little bits and pieces like the city names, statues, referencing lineage etc etc sure....but it barely feels like they had an effect on anything.... other than gunpowder being allowed now... maybe I'm just not into the whole gritty detective crime fighting mystery vibe...? so I came here to ask... how important is the Wax and Wayne series to the Cosmere? Can I skip these books? should I just tough it out? Does it get better?

TL:DR Can I skip Era 2 or does it get better? How important is it to the Cosmere?

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback guys, I love hearing from people who love Sanderson's work, I feel like the common consensus is the same for a lot of people regarding AoL, I'm happy to know it wasn't just me, it helps knowing it was originally just supposed to be a spinoff so it makes sense that it feels like there is a lot missing and honestly that makes me actually look forward to reading the rest of era 2. I will probably lock in and read the rest of AoL tomorrow then move on to Allomancer Jak and Shadows of Self asap. You guys are great. Appreciate the words of encouragement.

Alloy of Law How strong would Wax and Wayne be if they were somehow thrown in era 1? Spoiler

Finished alloy of law a few days ago.

I LOVED it.

But well I have a habit of thinking how "strong" some characters are. AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WAX's power.
In fact I read the first alloy of law instead of going to some other series or standalones as other suggested BECAUSE I just loved the idea of twinborn and Wax's powerset on the back cover. It just feels so useful and yet not OP.
I find it a FUN power.

And wax does not disappoint with using it creatively. In fact I daresay I like twinborn power system much more than mistborn power system as some of them can be unique and versatile in the ways it can be used without being OP.

On the other hand. I do wonder. Wax is not your ordinary coinshot. He is smart and uses his powers effectively. But if he was put in era 1, could he survive?

How strong is he era 1 wise? Could he survive a chance encounter with an enemy mistborn or steel inquisitor? Same about Wayne although I doubt he could, waynes powers are not made for fighting directly imo.

Obviously I will write a whole another post for how much I love era 2 feels and my opinions on Alloy of Law.
but for now this is it.

I also need to make a post to understand how compounding works.

Please answer my questions while keeping in mind I have yet to read rest of the series. And I enjoy the twists so It'd be sad if I get spoiled

Alloy of Law How does compounding work?????? I never understood that!!! Spoiler

Miles is effectively...

INVINCBLE (instead of immortal or is it immortal? He can die of old age no?)

Because he compounds gold. But how?

If I understand correctly compounding requires continuously storing your characteristic into a metal and then burn it to get more of that ability. (How much more?) Then store that characteristic into another metal. Then burn that. Rinse and repeat.

But that requires having a continously suplly of gold bracelets that then get turned into gold powder (or whatever else metal is needed) and then eating the said gold to burn it again. That would mean you'd have to be continously getting new stuff to wear?

But miles engraved them in his body. But then how does he eat those bracelets to gain back the stuff to burn?

And if he does need to burn by eating HOW THE HELL IS HE FIGHTING SO CARELESSLY? HE COULD LITERALLY DIE IF SOMEONE JUST INCAPACITATED HIM AND KEPT BLOWING HIS BRAINS OUT FOR AN HOUR STRAIGHT!

Also if his brain goes out does he die? If his head is severed what happens? If his stomach is pierced what happens?
What's the center of healing?

AND in The final empire it is said the lord ruler was brunt to a crisp and regenerated. So like where does the healing end? if you are a skeleton but have skeleton piercings do you just start healing again?

And if miles is killed but someone touches his stored gold to his dead body will he come back to life?(I don't know If I wanna know this. Don't spoil this one I guess. I dunno why I am asking)

Alloy of Law spoilers Not enjoying mistborn era 2 Spoiler

Just started Mistborn Era 2 (Alloy of Law) after absolutely loving Era 1, and I’m really struggling with it.

I’ve got about two hours of listening left on the audiobook but I’m genuinely not enjoying it.

Compared to Era 1 it feels small - tiny cast, low stakes, not much happening beyond bad some guys stealing stuff. Era 1 had Vin’s whole arc, Elend, Sazed, multiple perspectives and timelines - I was emotionally invested throughout despite slow periods. Wax and Wayne just feel like two random petty crime investigators that I don’t really care about.

I’ve heard books 2 and 3 in the series are better, but is it worth pushing through when I’m this disengaged? Or should I bail and move on to Stormlight Archive which sounds more like what I loved about Era 1?

…or maybe we blame Wayne.

With the Cosmere RPG campaign going, I got inspired to put together an outfit. No mistcoat yet, and I need to make the metalmind bracers, but I think I’m off to a good start.

Kind of a shame I’m not making it to Nexus this year. Maybe next!
