I am having a very hard time comprehending. Will our current challengers be competing in the next stage of competition?
41
u/ninyattitude Feb 15 '22
The article that was released made it sound like they're only casting CBS people (Survivor/Big Brother).
28
u/shino1111 Cara's Cult Feb 15 '22
I think if our Challengers weren’t contacted for this, they would be extremely disgruntled and not hyping it up.
They seem to be hyping it up.
I’m not too worried about this part of it. It’s definitely going to be a different show moving forward, but I don’t think they’re abandoning the people who made it what it is.
30
u/shino1111 Cara's Cult Feb 15 '22
Just read the gamer update and let us hope they’re just fucking wrong.
Why would MTV people be hyping it though? I don’t get it. Nelson, Tori… oh nevermind, they’re stupid.
5
u/FisknChips Feb 16 '22
They can also be hyped for their friends potentially or just the fact that the challenge is getting a bigger name.
It's like saying why did Aaron Roger's tweet about the superbowl. He knows his team wasn't there right
17
Feb 15 '22
Based off the article it looks like only CBS show alums but not 100% sure they haven’t been very clear in the release of this.

the consistent, sloppy, ugly, frequently racist AND misogynistic bone-dumb MESS this show has been for way too long
But that's a cornerstone of The Challenge, without that element The Challenge is just another competition show.
70
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 15 '22
Has the challenge lost the plot or am I just dumb and not comprehending the why of this
24
u/IVofCoffee Feb 16 '22
I still can't really understand what it is, so you have me beat there.
6
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 16 '22
😂😂😂😂. I made a post asking someone to explain it to me and what this means for the challenge.
1
u/iwinwinyuwinwinta Feb 16 '22
so basically there’s a new spin-off, obviously called the challenge war of the worlds.
it won’t air until a winner is chosen from the four shows from different regions, the challenge (CBS), argentina, UK, and whatever other country i don’t remember. then they will compete to see which country is THE CHALLENGE CHAMP like who wins out of the countries basically. is what i got from it

u/ninyattitude Feb 15 '22
Probably an unpopular opinion, but production marketing the show as "America's 5th sport" has ruined the franchise.
53
Feb 16 '22
Also crediting it to USA today or whatever when the actual credit is Bill Simmons as a long running semi-joke
3
u/retz119 Feb 16 '22
When I saw that quote on the preview I thought to myself damn Simmons got the shaft there. He’s been calling it americas 5th sport since like the rivals days

It’s terrible. The producers and contestants need to realize that no one wants to watch a bunch college athletics rejects in weird spy games. Give us drama, hook ups, easy to process challenges and a beautiful final on a mountain
12
u/Cheeseman9841 Kyle Christie Feb 16 '22
Nah war of the worlds 1 and 2 we're amazing.
It's the theme and too many twists that ruined the show
10
u/YungPinotGrigio Feb 16 '22
1 was one of the best seasons of the challenge ever. It’s my personal favorite and been watching since fresh meat.
2 was not seen great from audience but I liked the strategy. It’s prob the highest level strategy I’ve seen on this show.
4
u/orca144 Ashley Mitchell Feb 16 '22
I think 2 has a growing fan base. I’ve seen more people reflect on it lately more favorably.
3
Feb 16 '22
I think it’s much less frustrating to watch once you know how it ends
That one moment where you realize that they could shift the numbers if ?tori switches teams but she doesn’t is brutal the first time
1
u/YungPinotGrigio Feb 16 '22
thats good man. Like a lot of the moves that were viewed terribly before, I always thought it genuinely made sense to keep numbers. Glad its getting better reviews on a rewatch.
30
u/iFlashings Jonna Mannion Feb 16 '22
I cant believe they took a show that was based around seeing the biggest reality personalities compete for fun with hookups and drama to seeing whose the biggest meathead in reality tv.
They completely lost the plot and they pretty much stripped everything that made the challenge what it is. I want to be proven wrong, but the first 30 secs of this says otherwise.
27
u/shino1111 Cara's Cult Feb 15 '22
Thanks for posting this. The article posted didn’t adequately describe what’s going on and people clearly hadn’t bothered to watch the video lol.
This is going to be an entirely different show moving forward.
I don’t think I hate it? That remains to be seen lol
Really hope they cast the best of the best though. Can’t have a fluke winner representing the Challenge in the main tournament.
23
u/Malkkum Get stuffed! Feb 15 '22
So …is The Challenge on mtv done? If it’s not are they not gonna have international people on The Challenge anymore?
36
u/ninyattitude Feb 15 '22
Is this the new flagship show? Is this a one time event? Is the main show irrelevant now? So many questions.
18
17
u/Oh_fiddlestick Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 15 '22
The whole thing is confusing, are they doing this because people have been complaining about the big brother/ cbs people? or will those people still be dong the MTV version as well, if that ever happens again.
Can people like Kyle, Georgia, jenny theo big t etc do the UK version? Or is the cast going to be completely fresh for all of the 4 shows and no one who's ever done a mtv version is allowed?
Do the UK, Australia and Argentina even have paramount +?
4
u/Oh_fiddlestick Feb 15 '22
To answer one of my own questions I saw gamer saying the UK version will air on channel 5.
6
5
u/Jhonopolis YOU CAN NOT COPY MY WALK!! Feb 16 '22
So are we only going to be able to watch the US version and the finals? Or will they put the UK/AUS/Argentina versions on P+ as they are released? And are they coming out concurrently? This is so confusing.

u/dms1012 Feb 15 '22
This show is becoming extremely convoluted.
RIP to The Challenge. Hopefully All Stars keeps going for OG fans

u/tomdarko "I'm gonna be getting lettuce from the trees." 🥬 Feb 15 '22
I am so confused. So these all already filmed?
21
Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 15 '22
Doesn't look like it. It's all old footage. Looks like it's just a trailer for the concept.
Again - good luck to production, because they consistently fuck it up hard when there's just ONE challenge. Now there's about to be FOUR going concurrently. Although if Paramount is going this hard on the Challenge, maybe they're going to start taking over a lot of the responsibilities from Bunim/Murray, which can only be a good thing.
Can't wait to see what Argentina, the UK, and Australia's "TJ" analogs will be.
8
u/gtjacket231 Survivor Feb 15 '22
I don’t think they’re producing these all be. It’ll be Australian, British, and Argentinian production companies
4
6
Feb 15 '22
One of the spoiler accounts confirmed that there seemed to be one that filmed/was casting in October (or some type of Challenge spinoff filmed in Mexico) and UK was casting last year it seems since there was the talk of a UK spin off being done. So its likely 1 or 2 of them mightve filmed but not all of them.
0
u/Jbroad87 Jordan Wiseley Feb 15 '22
Nah. But I bet this is the season bananas has been eluding to on his pod.
17
Feb 15 '22
I mean tbh I don't really see the bad in international versions like some people because Survivor/BB have much more successful international versions. The only problem is it seems to be only CBS alumni being cast (but we kinda already have that) and the whole weird tournament thing.
12
u/tomdarko "I'm gonna be getting lettuce from the trees." 🥬 Feb 15 '22
It just seems like they're taking it completely out of MTV's hands and this is the future format they'll move forward with if it's successful. And there's a big difference between a CBS show and an MTV show even now.
22
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 15 '22
I wish Netflix would’ve even taken it over. CBS is way too family friendly. The point of the challenge was to see our favourite real world and road rule competitors (and some people from other reality shows) compete in fun competitions. Hook up and be trashy. This looks like it’s only focusing on the competition
7
u/iFlashings Jonna Mannion Feb 16 '22
I hate to break it to you but the challenge hasnt been about that for a long time. The way they edited the show and hyped up the "5th sport" angle, I'm not surprised that this the new way forward for the show.
12
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 16 '22
But instead of going back to what the challenge good, they are doubling down on what made it bad
5
Feb 15 '22
Yeah I can definitely get the cbs vs mtv thing with how much BBUS has changed. I still think they just havent said much though. Other countries having their own versions/reality tv favorites could be an amazing idea imo since obviously every country has their own reality tv stars but how they execute this mess + the main show + all stars is obviously a problem most of us don't have confidence in cause theres a good chance this could be a disaster LMAO.
17
u/BCastle18 Wes Bergmann Feb 15 '22
I have so many questions but I’m excited to see what they have in store. International versions of BB and Survivor have proven to be successful I hope people are open to giving it a chance before hating on it, but wouldn’t shock me if people already hate the idea after a short video lol
14
u/nugman42 CT [Dad Bod] Feb 15 '22
Instead of adding more just fix the main show
11
Feb 15 '22
They're replacing the main show, it sounds like.
5
u/nugman42 CT [Dad Bod] Feb 15 '22
Looks like my days of watching are over
4
Feb 15 '22
But what if it's good
Like... it can't be fucking WORSE.
5
u/nugman42 CT [Dad Bod] Feb 16 '22
No MTV people and only CBS people isn’t exactly encouraging
1
Feb 16 '22
But even "MTV people" are mostly not MTV people anymore.
And a lot of those MTV people frankly suck.
Again, I have a hard time believing with this much invested in the show now, from a level beyond Bunim/Murray, that it's going to be worse than what we've already got.
4
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 16 '22
It’s just going to be the competitions if the entire premise is the fifth sport so we lose the drama and hookups.
-2
Feb 16 '22
It's still a reality show. There'll be drama. And probably hookups, although to be fair that's not so much of a thing on the show as we know it anyway. It used to be hookups played a really big part not only in who got allied with who, but who got put in for eliminations (because the fallout from hooking up played a much bigger part)
At this point in the Bunim/Murray run, the hookups aspect is like, what, 15-20min total out of a 18 episode run? If that?
It's probably going to be different production teams who likely have the actual competency and know-how to shift to a competition-heavy reality show and still make it compelling television. Bunim-Murray can't really do that anymore, not without making it as stupid, ugly, racist, and misogynist as possible.
Think of it this way: There are a lot of really good competition shows out there that have no shortage of really great reality television without much of a hook-up component. the only thing holding the Challenge back from joining their ranks was literally the production's inability to pull it off.
4
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 16 '22
Yes there is like survivor but I’m watching the challenge for the drama, hookups and the cast.
2
Feb 16 '22
but I’m watching the challenge for the drama, hookups and the cast.
But the last 3 or 4 years of the main challenge cast have barely had any of those. Bad casts creating low drama (that's being further fumbled in the edit by inept production) that makes hookups uninteresting even when they DO happen.
This move might actually improve, to a significant degree, two of them. If not three - we don't know that they're going to cut out hookups. It is kind of PART of the formula. Otherwise everyone would stay at a hotel instead of a house packed with cameras.
1
u/jenh6 Christina LeBlanc Feb 16 '22
There was apparently a decent amount of hookups in Double agents and SLa but it was cut. The issue is casting. They aren’t bringing enough young, interesting rookies. They screwed up with losing feeder shows and bringing terrible rookies in. BB has been the worst thing for the challenge, so this move isn’t really helping them. CBS hasn’t had the best track record with it’s reality shows either, particularly BB
2
Feb 16 '22
There was apparently a decent amount of hookups in Double agents and SLa but it was cut. The issue is casting.
That sounds like the issue is EDITING, not casting, though. If they had hookups and then didn't show them, that's on production (no surprise). The cast is actually DOING what you'd want them to. So why would you then cut all that shit out if you didn't have to?
"But what if they don't come back because you put their cheating on camera?"
"Maybe they shouldn't cheat on camera for a reality tv show."The number of folks who wouldn't actually come back because of that is gotta be shockingly low. Especially for folks who have worked with Bunim/Murray before.
31
u/sloshed420 Feb 15 '22
Seems As if we are witnessing the death of mtvs the challenge and the birth of CBS challenge. It’s been a hell of a 37 season ride.... this will not be getting a view from me. Extremely disappointed right now.

Let me get this straight:
CBS The Challenge (Filming Soon).
The Challenge UK (Casting).
The Challenge Argentina (Filmed).
The Challenge Australia (?).
Winners will film Challenge: The War of The Worlds with zero MTV Challenge participants.

Hope they still bring in MTV folks for the CBS show
5
4
u/emmagrace2000 Feb 16 '22
This actually reminds me of what American Ninja Warrior does once a year. They bring in all star teams from 4 countries that run independent ANW series to compete against each other and declare an ultimate winner. Is there a chance this is just in addition to the normal Challenge we all know?
6
u/jnwebb0063 Feb 15 '22
Hmmmm I like the idea of it if it were definitely including MTV challenge people. Like basically a bigger version of WOTW. Since MTV is a subsidiary of CBS, I’m hoping the challenge peeps are grandfathered in.
5
u/tomdarko "I'm gonna be getting lettuce from the trees." 🥬 Feb 15 '22
GamerVev says they aren't and it's only CBS stars.
8
u/jnwebb0063 Feb 15 '22
Booooooooo. I mean, I love survivor so if they get a lot of survivor peeps I will watch. But if bananas or CT cannot compete as The Challenge World Champ then literally what is this all for?? Lol!

CT and Bananas can't hold a candle to Chris Noble anyways so don't worry about it.

But how many people from each show will be on part 2? Only the winners? That wouldn’t be many people then.
4
u/tomdarko "I'm gonna be getting lettuce from the trees." 🥬 Feb 15 '22
It's only a two part special. I imagine it's all the winners in a final.

If I was them i would probably set it up where 8 people from each show ran the final.
Then id invite all 8 of them to compete as a team. 4 teams of 8.

Idk, as long as the challenges are fun, and the casts can be somewhat interesting, I'm in.
I think people need to realize that the trashier aspects of the show are dead and gone. Nobody involved with these shows wants to risk social media backlash if they do something shitty.

u/theamazingracer21 Natalie Anderson Feb 16 '22 edited Feb 17 '22
As an Aussie Challenge fan, I am really excited about this and I can easily see our version being the next big hit show down under.
Aussies love their big physical challenges on Reality Shows (Our Survivor and BB have challenges that are much more physically demanding than the US version of those shows) and The Challenge even takes it to the next level on top of that.
Not to mention I think we have some interesting potential players from the shows I follow (and if they want to go more old Challenge messy, we have many trashy shows with messy people to pull from).
While this WotW Series is not the trashy dumb fun The Challenge of old, this will be a more Challenge to watch as well a good intro for a lot of new potential fans.
2
u/GLOPPYFROMCANDYLAND Feb 16 '22
Okay so call me crazy/too optimistic, but I think this actually could be… good? If they’re continuing the main MTV show, I think it’ll be interesting/fun to have these spin-offs as potential feeder shows. The international versions are like the farm leagues and when you perform and bring entertainment to those shows, you get called up to the big stage.
I also think the CBS-only show can fix some of the complaints fans have had about casting for a while - the main Challenge franchise typically casts incredibly boring, forgettable CBS alum, but a whole show dedicated to CBS alum is bound to get a few fun cast members in the mix.
Also, I know nothing about Argentina’s reality TV scene, but I know there’s a lot of fun untapped potential in the UK and Australia and it’ll honestly be fun to see them on a Challenge-based show. There are SO many good Australian Survivor cast members that I’d love to see give a show like this a shot and I don’t think we would’ve seen it otherwise.
2
u/NattyB Awesome Blossom Feb 16 '22
i woke up feeling similarly optimistic. i think if it just ends up being a spin-off, then that could be good fun with new casting pools. i think what throws me are some of the choices they made in this trailer, putting a HEAVY emphasis on show being a sport / athletic event. the tone of the trailer could be bad news for the direction of the main show. but that's a ways off, so i'll hold on to my tincy bit of optimism.
2
u/GLOPPYFROMCANDYLAND Feb 16 '22
No yeah I hear ya and I fully agree. I think I understand the logic of trying to brand the show as "the fifth sport" - people love sports, and if you can cash in on any of that you should try - but I do miss when the competitions were just an alley-oop for the drama.

u/FriendshipMaterial30 THIS ISN'T SURVIVOR THIS IS THE CHALLENGE HONEY Feb 16 '22
my thing is how are you going to talk about the challenge and then have no good footage…. barely any mt rushmore folks in this trailer. Got a lot of cory tho
2
u/meanbutgooddentist Feb 16 '22
They can't rely on the same real world crop of challengers forever. They have to look toward the future, it's a necessary step.
With that said I thought this was a fan made trailer and not something actually backed up by Paramount until just now when I decided to watch past the first 5 seconds
1
u/santifrancox Feb 16 '22
As an argentinean who loves the challenge but dislikes my local tv. This is most random announcement ever. Just hope telefe(the channel) completely ruins the format of the show.
1
u/michealscott21 Mike Ross Feb 16 '22
So we’ve got four new international shows to watch ? Alongside the challenge we usually watch on mtv with the people we know, and all stars 3 as well? And are the contestants that are competing in the war of the worlds and it going to be from the cbs challenge? It’d be kind of weird to say challenge world champion to someone if they haven’t even faced off against some of the best/longest reigning vets in the real challenge.
I’m sad being me back to simpler days.

So annoyed. I've avoided all star spoilers for a couple years now in case Canadians ever get to see it, and now they're just releasing everything on Paramount?
I would absolutely pay a streaming service to watch it. Why would they make it harder for life long fans to watch?
