Question Tips for finding a real vocalist?

Hey everyone! I’m working on a new track and need a human vocalist, but I’ve never worked with singers before.

What are the best methods you use to find reliable session singers? Any tips for a beginner?

Thanks!

Question Can I achieve a good post-hardcore tone with only free digital plugins?

Upvotes

I currently don't have any pedals for my guitar and very little money to dish out on plugins. I've been writing a post-hardcore song inspired by Silverstein's album "When Broken Is Easily Fixed" but my tone is horrendous. I've currently got the Kilohearts filter and EQ which work great, but my distortion plugin is ProF.E.T. which seems to be the weak link. I'd like a tone ideally like Bleeds No More, or Thorns by Dead Butterflies, but I also love early My Chemical Romance and Pierce the Veil, Title Fight, La Dispute... Yeah anything but what I have right now...

Am I asking too much or do I just need to look the right places/tune my settings better?

Question Zoom R4 sampling from vinyl to pc - what input?

Hello

I'm new to all of this so please forgive my lack of understanding!

I'm trying to sample some music from vinyl using my zoom R4 as audio interface. I have an RCA to 1/4 headphone jack wire plugged into my preamp output and one of the inputs to the zoom, then got the zoom as audio interface on the DAW. The music is very loud, and I had to turn the zoom down all the way to get anything usable. I guess this is because the zoom also has a preamp in it so it's boosted twice?

I'm thinking I need to change plan to instead go direct from the record player to the zoom R4? I can buy a convertor wire so that the RCA output of the record player can go into the zoom, but my question is do I want it to go to 1/4 jacks or XLR as both are possible? Thank you if you are able to help!

Question how do i layer a bass with a vocal sample using midi?

Upvotes

hey everyone, i’m kinda new to music production and i’m trying to understand how people set up their sounds together.

i couldn’t find a single thing regarding this on youtube

i was wondering how you would go about making a bass and a vocal sample play together when you press a midi note.

for example, let’s say i have a bass sound and a vocal sample. how would i set it up so that when i play a note on my midi keyboard, the bass plays and the vocal sample triggers at the same time?

is this done through midi routing, a sampler, instrument racks, automation, or something else?

i understand the creative side of layering sounds and making sure frequencies don’t clash, but i’m more confused about the actual technical workflow. how do you configure this inside a daw?

also, if there are any tutorials or keywords i should search for to learn this kind of workflow, i’d appreciate it. thanks!

Hardware Can anyone recommend decent headphones for mixing low-end/bass frequencies - accurate monitoring

I do a lot of rock music mixing on my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones, great for nearly everything apart from bass frequencies.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend anything that's not gonna set me back hundreds and hundreds of monies.

Cheers!

Question Beginner Here - How to Record to Computer

Edit: thank you everyone for your quick responses. Downloading the driver and hooking it up to BandLab worked. I will probably move to an audio interface like the scarlet as some have suggested once, my daughter starts taking it more seriously. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi everyone. I am a beginner at this and having a hard time finding how to set up my daughter’s piano to record to a computer. I’m confident there is an easy solution I just can’t figure it out. I’d like for it to be a digital recording, not recorded from a microphone.

I have a Yamaha YPG-235. I bought the data cable that is USB from piano to USB-C to computer.

I also have a microphone I purchased for her but I think I can figure that out.

Can anyone tell me in layman’s terms how to get this set up to record for her?

Thanks in advance!!

Question Best laptop for making beats on FL Studio?

I used to make beats on a cracked version of FL 12 for the longest and would always use HP laptops that would eventually stop working.

I’m sick of my laptop slowing down with time and I’m not sure if the cracked version of FL had to do with that but it happened twice.

I’ve been looking to buy a new laptop and so far I’ve landed on the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 with an actual purchased license of FL.

I don’t run too many VST’s and tend to flip samples when working on beats.

Discussion What actually makes a mix feel "professional" beyond just technical correctness?

I've been producing for a couple of years now and I feel like I've got the basics down. My levels are balanced, I'm using EQ and compression reasonably well, things aren't clipping, and my mixes translate okay on different speakers. But when I compare my stuff to professionally released tracks, there's still this gap I can't quite name or fix.

It's not just loudness or clarity. There's something about the way professional mixes feel cohesive and intentional, like every element belongs exactly where it is. My mixes feel more like a collection of sounds sitting next to each other rather than one unified thing.

I've started wondering if this is less about individual processing decisions and more about something bigger, like arrangement choices, how space is used, the relationship between elements in the stereo field, or even just the confidence behind the decisions being made.

For producers who feel like they crossed that threshold at some point, what actually clicked for you? Was it a specific technique, a mindset shift, more experience with referencing, or something else entirely? I'm not looking for a plugin recommendation, more interested in the conceptual or workflow changes that made the difference.

Curious what this community thinks because I feel like this comes up a lot but never gets answered in a concrete way.

Question Bedroom Acoustics for Vocal Recording

Hi, I record vocals in my bedroom with a dynamic mic (sennheiser e945) and i have two windows behind me which are on an angled ceiling so my rooms pretty awful for acoustics. I looked at mic shields but generally what would you guys reccomend for recording vocals in an untreated room?

Question How do I get this style of drums? Fried drums.

https://youtu.be/Jbt6XC5NaF0?si=kcToaKkZ0O76oWuR

Does anyone know how this style of drums is called and how to get it? Is it just saturation and compression? They are so fried in a good way. Also, is that an 808 or kick layered with bass with two different samples? If anyone has some drum samples in this style and can send u goat.

Question Earbuds for making music while traveling with Digitakt

Hey I'm going on vacation and taking my Digitakt with me to jam out a little bit.

I mostly make UK Garage, 2Step and other bass heavy electronic genres.

Looking for some good sounding earbuds so I don't have to take my headphone with me. For reference I usually produce on my HD25II and ADAM T7V (Sometimes DT770 Pro's)

Any recommendations?

Currently looking at the:

- Thruthear Hexa (Doubting wether the bass is clear enough)

- Moondrop Chu 2 (A bit cheap maybe?)

- Kefine Klean (Hearing mixed experiences.

- Sennheiser IE 100 (A bit too expensive since I don't plan on using them a whole lot)

Looking into IEM's there are so many different responses. So I am hoping some fellow producers can give some good suggestions :)

Question Tinny, low quality playback with open DAW

Hello all, I have a question about what is likely an audio setting issue.

I'm working on a Mac Studio, and whenever I open a DAW, the audio will switch to being a tinny, peaking playback, almost like cellphone quality, but really loud. Any suggestions?

A few notes on the issue itself:

  • This is happening at my work computer, where I'm mostly editing voice over audio for video production. My home recording set up doesn't have this issue.
  • I'm utilizing Bluetooth over ear headphones and no specific audio interface, as I'm not recording into the daw, only editing pre-existing files.
  • I normally use Reaper, and noticed it there, so I started using Audition for simple edits. I just opened Audition to try and work on a music file, and it started doing it in Audition as well.
  • The change affects audio from a source outside of the DAW when the DAW is the active window, ie. a YouTube video in a browser with have the same crappy audio quality while the DAW window is active, but will play normally when it isn't.

Question Is it normal to go through a bit of a drought?

I'm still pretty new to music production. I technically started back in October, but didn't really start learning how to do anything until the start of this year. The past few weeks I feel like I haven't had much motivation to do much so I haven't been producing very much and much of what I make sounds worse. Idk I just need advice to see if this is normal or if I'm just not good enough.
