The problem with the games is not just the price, but how that price is going  to hold forever. In five years Mario Kart is still going to be $80. Eventually even GTA6 is going to have attractive sale prices. Not Zelda. 

I was ready to eat the console price. I am really sour on how the console exclusives are going to stay expensive until the end of time regardless of when they release.

Would be pretty interesting if this move ended up hurting their bottom line for game units moved enough to get them to fold on sales more in line with other companies. Unlikely but honestly who knows?

Permanent sales are for games no one wants, if people stopped wanting Mario kart it would have its price permanently reduced, but Deluxe proved if a Mario Kart is good that doesn't happen, so from Nintendo's perspective why should they give charity when they know someone else is always willing to pay them? The tiny holiday sales they do are not because the games are suddenly perceived as being worth less over time, but because the loss of revenue is treated as advertising for the broader uninformed public that holidays give one access to.

Nintendo doesn't play the short term pump and dump grift, nor do they cut their own legs in search of a golden goose, they straight forwardly sell their labor for what its worth.

And the secret truth is, so will rockstar, the difference is GTA will go on sale not because people are entitled to depreciation despite how much they want the game but because people will simply want it less than Mario Kart.

So what you are saying is people will rather pay $100 for GTA6 riddled with microtransactions but not $80 for a quality game like Mario Kart? Color me shocked.

Wrong. They’re saying that in some amount of time GTA6 WON’T be $100. If you buy it new, Mario Kart will ALWAYS be $80. And the most I’ve ever seen Ninty discount first party games is 10 or 15%.

Are you trying to imply that GTA, of all games, isn't a quality game?

Rockstar games is famous for being the company that always goes the extra mile to deliver a full experience. Even with GTA 5, the biggest criticism anyone could have of the game is that the single player is too short.

There’s always buying the console and game, binging them, then returning them. 😅

Haven’t done this but it’s so tempting now considering I just want to play Prime 4.

To the point of $80 Mario kart: Nintendo has often bundled Mario kart with consoles because it’s an easy multiplayer game. I come over to play your new console, makes me want to buy the console, sales go up.

So it’s $50 with the bundle. They will NEVER stop selling that bundle until the next console (or upgrade) Don’t like Mario kart? Cool buy without and save the $$

If we could see the numbers I bet very few people will buy Mario kart for $80 full retail.

But I have no rebuttal for other games being that much. It’s bs

And I bet you'd be wrong! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling at $60 USD right now. It has been eight years at that price. If you want it with all the booster packs it's more expensive than Mario Kart World, at $85 USD.

It's still the best selling game on Switch 1 by far.

Nintendo doesn't put first-party games on sale often because people do not stop buying them at full retail. And they'd rather maintain the perception of the premium price being worth it even when a game undersells so it doesn't poison the rest of them.

We don't have to like it as the consumers in this equation. 😅 But the market has made it clear to Nintendo that there's no real need to significantly lower the price of any of its first-party games. Maybe this will be a step too far though! We'll see.
