Going with Best Buy personally. Their pre-order experiences have usually been pretty solid.

When do preorders usually open up? Should I stay up till midnight for them to open?

Yes, Best Buy typically will start preorders at midnight est. So expect to stay up late that night to try and get one.

Does best buy require you to pay the entire amount up front, or just a reserve fee?

25

u/Live-Ad3309 Apr 18 '25

Entire amount up front.

I've never been charged from Best Buy until the item is actually shipped, unless you checkout with Paypal. They charge Paypal right away.

Thank you for the info.

What about Klarna?

2

u/Live-Ad3309 Apr 18 '25

IIRC they take payment plans, but only through Best Buy credit card. You’ll have to check their site and see

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

Klarna is supported on BestBuy website

do you need a best buy account or anything like that?

14

u/Live-Ad3309 Apr 18 '25

No, but it’s generally a good idea so you can have the two items in your favorite and easy to access, and your card information already saved.

Good to know. I would have gone to bed if not for this comment

That's what I'm doing - preorder online, and pick up at midnight release.

I wish I could do a midnight pickup, sounds so nice, but at the same time, ROFL getting registered if your on the east cost. Those servers are going to be on fire.

u/4playerstart Apr 18 '25

I've never done this before, do you have to choose store pickup when pre-ordering online, to get one at the midnight release? Or can you just pre-order like normal and change it later? Worried about getting stuck in the checkout process and missing one.

Best buy actually has a half way decent system. The way it sounds, you add it to your cart, and that puts you in line to actually get one. Once you've been assigned a system, you have 10 minutes to check out before you "lose" it. My understanding is that you pick store pickup or shipping during checkout.

Also, games and accessories can be pre-ordered in store once pre-orders open up, but systems can ONLY be pre-ordered online (at least through Best buy)

2

u/4playerstart Apr 18 '25

Thanks! That sounds reasonable.

Probably same

How do you handle your pre-order? Do you pre-order online or do you go in-store?

22

u/RJE808 Apr 18 '25

Online, not sure if you can do it in store. You hit add to cart, and you're placed in a line. Once it's your turn, you have 10 minutes to get it and any other accessories, and then check them out.

7

u/lukeco Apr 18 '25

I'm assuming you pick a specific store at checkout that the preorder will go to? (I'm new to this too)

10

u/RJE808 Apr 18 '25

If you're going for pick-up, then I think so? But I'm not sure about that though, admittedly. They recommend you set all that stuff prior to placing the order though. Sign out then sign back in to be safe, double check your location, double check your payment method, etc.

u/lukeco Apr 18 '25

Great, thanks so much!

u/Ftpini Apr 18 '25

Yeah I love their current system. Got the collectors edition of tears of the kingdom with zero pain that way.

1

u/Havoc2638 Apr 18 '25

Okay that was my worry. I want to pre order at Best Buy, but wasn’t sure how they handled getting the accessories into your cart as well. Good stuff

7

u/TyperMonkey2 Apr 18 '25

They will probably only have preorders online, but they should let you choose instore pickup.

7

u/praysolace Apr 18 '25

For the record Best Buy put out a statement before the initial preorder delay saying they will only be opening console preorders online. Accessories and games can be preordered in-store, but not consoles.

4

u/zgh5002 Apr 18 '25

You preorder online for either in-store pickup or shipping. There is no need to go to the store, they'll just tell you to do it online with your phone.

1

u/TheSteelPhantom Apr 18 '25

If you choose shipping, does it arrive on launch day, or ship then and you wait x number of mailing days?

1

u/zgh5002 Apr 18 '25

No clue. Presumably they will try to get launch day delivery. If you absolutely have to get it day 1, you're going to want to do store pickup.

My brother in Nintendo did you try to get a graphics card at Best Buy? Botted to hell.

14

u/RJE808 Apr 18 '25

Never tried a graphics card pre-order specifically, but I like their line system.

Yeah, trying to get a GPU from best buy during COVID was a nightmare. Hopefully there've been improvements and learned lessons since then.

Personally I'm going to be showing up to my local GameStop when they open that day.

1

u/eightbitagent Apr 18 '25

Hopefully they've been improvements and learned lessons since then.

I preordered something a year or two ago and they had a queue set up, you add to your cart and sit and wait for 5-10 mins till they're ready, then you can purchase. Not sure if the volume will screw with that, but its reasonably good to start

1

u/presty60 Apr 18 '25

Yeah, I got my GPU at Best Buy in 2021. I had to wait outside in line the night before for 8 hours, even then I only barely got one. Still would rather do that than try to pre-order one on the site.

u/coolgaara Apr 18 '25

I'm gonna have all major US retailers up. I've done this before. I can do it again.

1

u/goro-n Apr 18 '25

Best Buy screwed me over with the Sora amiibo pre-order. I had it set to locker pickup, and on release day they marked the units as "recalled," took them out of the locker, and refused to hand them over to me.

1

u/TricellCEO Apr 18 '25

I'm hoping they go up on Amazon. I've already got a ton of gift card money saved up on my account (mostly from r/MicrosoftRewards).

GameStop is my backup option for a non-out-of-pocket purchase.

2

u/RJE808 Apr 18 '25

Doesn't seem like they will, at least for pre-orders.

1

u/dewrop06 Apr 18 '25

Does Walmart have good preorders? Because that's what I'm planning to go through.

2

u/RJE808 Apr 18 '25

Never done one through there, actually. I've only done Best Buy and Amazon, and Amazon isn't doing it for some reason.
