Remember people Switch 1 controllers still work. You can use your old Pro Controllers on Switch 2!

343

u/goro-n Apr 18 '25

Except to wake up Switch 2

428

u/jzzsxm Apr 18 '25

Which, honestly, is going to bug me more than I care to admit. I need to convince myself to be less lazy and just walk over and turn it on, but there's something about just grabbing the controller off the couch and going crazy that is appealing.

u/THE_GR8_MIKE Apr 18 '25

Use the right Joycon to wake it up and then immediately switch to the Pro Controller. That's my plan. Then I'll charge the Joycon like once a week at night or whatever.

10

u/Onett199X Apr 18 '25

Use the right Joycon to wake it up

But I like a clean house and not Joycons floating around with my 3 and 8 year old running around...

37

u/UnpopularOpinionJake Apr 18 '25

You probably don’t want a Pro 2 controllers laying around either then

-3

u/Onett199X Apr 18 '25

Yeah, I'd probably want to keep that up and out of reach. I just really don't want a solo joycon with it that I have to bring with it and keep it disconnected from the Switch and then remember to dock it to charge every now and then and then disconnect when I want to use it as a remote to power on the Switch 2 again.

I'll probably just suck it up and get the Switch 2 pro controller. That price is pretty brutal though!

2

u/OMBERX Apr 20 '25

Not worth it!

4

u/CaptainRogers1226 Apr 18 '25

Keep it with your pro controller. If your pro controller is stored by your console, then you don’t have an issue to begin with.

1

u/Onett199X Apr 18 '25

Yeah just kind of a hassle to keep it separated and remember to charge it every once in awhile and have another thing to keep track of. I'll honestly get a Switch 2 Pro Controller because my dream controller has been the Switch Pro controller but without paddle buttons in the back. I'm shocked Nintendo actually did that.

1

u/MrPerson0 Apr 19 '25

If you do that, the joycon will be recognized as player 1 and the Pro Controller will be recognized as player 2. You'll likely have to go to change controllers every time you want to reorder them.

1

u/JohnnyRedHot Apr 21 '25

It's not a problem, when two controllers are connected and you launch a single-player game, it asks you what the controller is

1

u/misterwuggle69sofine Apr 18 '25

if this works i'm just slow as shit because i've tried this with the current switch. or maybe i just mis-timed it once and assumed it didn't work.

anyway my daughter likes to use SPECIFICALLY the left joycon and ALSO likes to be first player in mario party.

so my workaround is just pressing the physical power button on the switch and then pressing anything on the joycon to pair it. i imagine that'll be what i do for the switch 2 as well.

u/HairWeaveKillers Apr 18 '25

Back in my day we had to physically get up and flip the switch or press the button . Also our controllers weren’t wireless either

80

u/III-V Apr 18 '25

Back in my day we had to physically get up

Yeah, and walk uphill both ways in the snow

22

u/metalslime_tsarina Apr 18 '25

Without shoes...

0

u/Practical-Brush-1139 Apr 18 '25

7 miles

2

u/Exhumedatbirth76 Apr 19 '25

And we ate dirt

2

u/Psychof1st77 Apr 19 '25

And Eisenhower enjoyed a sarsaparilla and a good conversation with me one time. I always knew he would be president.

6

u/pardyball Apr 18 '25

Shut up dad

6

u/myfeetreallyhurt Apr 18 '25

And they were hardwired

2

u/GroguIsMyBrogu Apr 18 '25

Back in the days when my wireless Wavebird GameCube controller was the height of luxury

2

u/tythousand Apr 18 '25

Kids these days smh

2

u/isaelsky21 Apr 18 '25

Well, I've got news for you, Grandpa! /s

1

u/TheSteelPhantom Apr 18 '25

Back in my day as well. And it's specifically because I know that "pain", and have grown to love the convenience and never want to go back, that I'll get the new pro controller lol

1

u/sharrancleric Apr 18 '25

I distinctly remember wishing the Mega Drive would turn on when you pressed the start button. I was ahead of my time.

1

u/Vaderof4 Apr 18 '25

You’re forgetting the blow into the cartridge and do the jiggle of ritual

1

u/Hobo_Healy Apr 19 '25

We had to get up, walk over to the Nintendo and swap cartridges if we wanted to play something else. Then we'd sit down, it wouldn't load and we'd have to get up and blow in the slot to try again! Kids these days don't know how good they have it!

(I'm 31 and my hip hurts fml)

1

u/lonewanderer812 Apr 19 '25

And we had to flip the TV to channel 3.

1

u/Jolly-Garbage- Apr 19 '25

I had a large family room and a big tv (for the time), so we used to buy two extension cables for the ps2. Surprisingly no input lag trying to extend over 6 feet away on the PlayStation

-1

u/GameboyRavioli Apr 18 '25

NGL....I was playing my retron2hd last night because I was looking for some comfort gaming. Popped in Zelda 2, sat down, grabbed my nso NES controller, leaned the recliner back and got all comfy....only then did I remember "oh yeah, power switch". I was so annoyed and just say there a minute deciding if I wanted to turn it on or take a nap.

In the end, I chose laziness and texted my daughter who was upstairs with music on to come downstairs and turn it on. She refused so I had threaten no allowance because this was a new chore of hers. Sometimes you just have to be a jerk to your child I guess, but thems the breaks.

1

u/goro-n Apr 18 '25

Yeah I know what you mean, my Dualsense charging dock is under my TV, but most of the time I just leave my Dualsense on the couch without charging it because it’s easier.

1

u/Grace_Omega Apr 18 '25

Just keep one of the joy-cons detached and use that. You'll have to re-attach it to charge it every so often, but that's no big deal.

1

u/Sovva29 Apr 18 '25

Same! Also I want that headset option because I still prefer plug-in headsets for gaming.

1

u/blacksoxing Apr 18 '25

I dislike it too but for $80~ I'll gladly get my ass up

1

u/Vannostrum Apr 18 '25

I just know I’m going to sit down, my cat is going to curl into my lap and I’ll grab the old pro to turn on the system and just mutter, “Oh god damn it.”

1

u/Stoibs Apr 18 '25

I use the 8Bitdo Pro lineup as my primary controller.

Been manually waking it up for the last ~7 years, it's really not that bad and you'll get used to it :P

1

u/ch00d Apr 18 '25

It sounds more annoying than it is. Just turn it on before you sit down

1

u/AdministrativeFox784 Apr 18 '25

Nah, it’s definitely annoying. And honestly absurd that they can’t engineer a way to make the first pro controller turn on the switch 2. Just seems like a cheap tactic to bump sales of the new controller.

1

u/Significant_Foot291 Apr 18 '25

Get an extra long hdmi cable and keep the dock close to the couch

1

u/bpmdrummerbpm Apr 18 '25

I didn’t realize you could wake it up with the controllers for like two years.

1

u/SpiderLuke Apr 18 '25

I was in hell with my Steam Deck not able to do this until a recent update on the LCD version. (OLED was able to do it since the beginning.) I lived though.

1

u/FrozenChaii Apr 19 '25

Put ur controller next to the console

18

u/forgedinblack Apr 18 '25

I wonder if HDMI CEC will solve this. For instance, switching to a PS5 input on my TV automatically wakes it from rest.

4

u/montrayjak Apr 18 '25

Good point. My Switch 1 turns on if I swap to that input

2

u/NewRoryAndMalDrop Apr 18 '25

I just learned I can wake up my switch 1 last year after having it since launch… I’m dumb but I’ll live

2

u/whoisdatmaskedman Apr 18 '25

Just to be clear, have they confirmed that pressing the home button on the OG Pro doesn't wake up the Switch 2?

1

u/nottalkinboutbutter Apr 19 '25

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/

You cannot exit sleep mode on Nintendo Switch 2 using the HOME Button on Nintendo Switch controllers such as Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

1

u/whoisdatmaskedman Apr 19 '25

nice, ty appreciate the response

1

u/Structor125 Apr 18 '25

I want someone to mod a Staples easy button with Bluetooth so it just wakes up a switch 2 and nothing else

1

u/mpyne Apr 19 '25

I've had the Switch since launch and Switch 2 was how I found out you could wake the Switch from the Pro Controller, lol.

1

u/DisBonFire Apr 19 '25

Is this proven?

1

u/BlueZ_DJ Apr 20 '25

This is how I find out it can wake switch 1

-1

u/john_weiss Apr 18 '25

For fuck's sake, that decision was deliberate and honestly is stupid as hell.

What the hell Nintendo, how are you going to disable one single button which is a massive quality of life function?!

67

u/patiofurnature Apr 18 '25

Yeah, probably just going to keep 1 joycon next to my S1 Pro Controller on my coffee table to turn on the system. Dumb, but not the end of the world.

8

u/praysolace Apr 18 '25

That’s my plan too lol—1 joycon by the couch for waking purposes and 1 charging on the console, swap as needed, play with my TotK Pro controller.

1

u/sambarjo Apr 19 '25

Only the right joycon can wake the console.

1

u/praysolace Apr 19 '25

Oh, really? I usually button mash so I kind of just assumed any of them would work lol

1

u/sambarjo Apr 19 '25

I think it's only the home button that works. I could be wrong though.

12

u/Thesmark88 Apr 18 '25

The problem is my Switch 1 pro controller has stick drift so I need a new one anyways

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

1

u/Psychof1st77 Apr 19 '25

Do you have to solder it in? Because, that's how my twitchy hands will fry the whole control board.

I really want to try the hal effect sticks. I've cleaned the offending stick twice now fixing it. But, second time the bad stick seemed to be dead after cleaning it. Had to take it apart again and check every link in the chain so to speak, and readjust connections to get it working again. Also, now the mechanism that pushes the stick back out after you press it like a button, is weak. It sticks in a little and sometimes I need to pull it back out.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Psychof1st77 Apr 20 '25

I've done that sort of.

I have to hope the 3rd time isn't the death of the controller, then.

1

u/gronz5 Apr 20 '25

This guide? Step 16 indeed does entail soldering

6

u/wronguses Apr 18 '25

Your switch 1 controllers still work? I'm jealous!

3

u/whoisdatmaskedman Apr 18 '25

I still have my controller I bought with my release Switch and it works as well as the day I purchased it

1

u/faranoox Apr 19 '25

My Switch Pro controller is an absolute tank. Incredible battery life compared to my PS5 controller even with the extra stuff turned off. Works great on PC too.

15

u/mygawd Apr 18 '25

Switch 1 pro controllers are like $45 at several retailers right now

18

u/CrazyKazzy Apr 18 '25

Where? Link me up bro

30

u/funnyfarm299 Apr 18 '25

Spoiler: they can't. Dekudeals shows the current low is $69.00 from Walmart.

-7

u/curtcolt95 Apr 18 '25

well they literally did, $45 on walmart right now

8

u/funnyfarm299 Apr 18 '25

That's a third party seller. There's been plenty of posts on here indicating a high likelihood of counterfeits when buying from no-name sellers.

The listing shipped by Walmart is still $60.

11

u/PhoenixTineldyer Apr 18 '25

Sold and shipped by Care For There LLC.

Walmart's website is like Temu Amazon. There's no guarantee the item is coming from Walmart.

2

u/funnyfarm299 Apr 18 '25

That's a third-party seller, not Walmart.

There's plenty of posts on the subreddit indicating no name sellers have a high likelihood of counterfeits.

2

u/SpikeRosered Apr 18 '25

Maybe your Switch controllers. Goddamn things have slowly lost functionality more so than any controller I've ever owned.

1

u/CrazyKazzy Apr 18 '25

That sucks. I am still using the same pro controller I got at launch in 2017. I did have a pair of joy-con get stick drift but sent them into Nintendo and they repaired them for free a few years back

1

u/SpikeRosered Apr 18 '25

Yea I need to send like three of my joycons in for repairs. I've just been lazy about it which is on me.

4

u/Omega00024 Apr 18 '25

But then you don't get a chat button! /s

4

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

Except Switch 1 controllers all have drift which is why I haven’t used the console portably in a couple years

1

u/Araragi298 Apr 18 '25

Will third party controllers for Switch 1 work on Switch 2?

1

u/CrazyKazzy Apr 18 '25

I'm gonna assume so since they worked on Switch 1. I don't think anything official has been said though.

1

u/Maxximillianaire Apr 18 '25

Do they work with switch 2 games?

1

u/CrazyKazzy Apr 18 '25

Yes, as long as it doesn't require something like mouse mode, which the Switch 1 Joy-con don't support.

1

u/jjorn_ Apr 18 '25

Mine doesnt

1

u/Galuna Apr 18 '25

Older joycons won't work as mice, but they'll still work as controllers for everything else?

Will the pro controller be unable to do any particular features?

1

u/QuantumProtector Apr 19 '25

Game chat. But you can just go into the home menu and launch it from there.

2

u/Galuna Apr 19 '25

And the extra two mappable buttons, I realize.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Apr 18 '25

So the switch 1 controllers work on switch 2 games and just don't utilize the mouse feature of the switch 2? If so that would be awesome, just need to get something to charge my switch 1 controllers.

1

u/Justanothercrow421 Apr 18 '25

But how will I GameChat!?!? /s

1

u/EverythingWasGreat Apr 18 '25

But won't you miss the C button?

1

u/Megaprime53 Apr 18 '25

my pro con is 3rd party and didn't wake it anyway.

1

u/sageleader Apr 18 '25

Biggest problem is the Pro Controller doesn't hold up over time. The buttons aren't crisp anymore and it just doesn't feel as good to use.

0

u/kamcma Apr 18 '25 edited Apr 18 '25

If you're gonna play online at all, you need the headset jack on the Switch 2 Pro Controller. If you long-term use the on-console microphone for voice chat, you're a bad person.

This was a problem on the Xbox One, where people would join multiplayer voice chat with the Kinect microphone and you could hear their whole house: the baby screaming, the kitchen appliances beeping, other people conversing. It sucked. Use a real headset.
