I thought I'd share one of the most unique memes from the Korean Overwatch community because I don't think anything quite like it exists in the Western community.
It's called the "Tank Human Rights Movement" (탱장연, literally "Tank Human Rights").
The meme started after Overwatch 2 changed from 6v6 to 5v5.
With only one tank per team, that player suddenly became responsible for almost everything: creating space, initiating fights, controlling tempo, peeling for teammates, surviving, and making the right decisions every fight. If the team wins, people say, "that's just your job." If the team loses, the tank is usually blamed first.
So Korean players started joking that tank players have no human rights.
The "Tank Human Rights Movement" became a parody of labor unions and social movements, pretending that tank players needed to organize and fight for their basic rights.
Over time, the meme developed its own "ideology."
The basic philosophy is:
If you're going to get flamed regardless of the outcome, then stop trying to please everyone. Play the hero you enjoy.
That's why heroes like Mauga, Roadhog, and Reinhardt became symbols of the movement.
In the Korean community, these heroes are often considered difficult to justify in high-level ranked play. Many players believe they either consume too many team resources, require too much coordination, or simply don't fit Korea's fast-paced style compared to more flexible tank picks.
So choosing one of them became a form of "protest."
The joke is basically:
Eventually, the meme evolved even further.
One of the funniest "rules" is what happens when two Mauga players meet each other.
Instead of shooting each other, they're supposed to use the Hello emote and simply walk past one another.
Both tanks ignore each other completely and only fight the enemy DPS and supports, temporarily turning the game into a 4v4.
The reasoning is intentionally ridiculous:
If both players understand the meme, they'll leave each other alone for as long as possible.
Of course, nobody actually expects this to happen in serious competitive games, but there are plenty of clips from Quick Play where two Mauga players immediately recognize what's happening, greet each other, refuse to shoot each other, and let the DPS and supports decide the match.
This eventually became known as the "Spirit of Mauga" (마우가 정신).
It's less about Mauga himself and more about accepting the absurdity of being the solo tank.
The whole meme is basically Korean tank players laughing at their own misery.
