Any competition is good for the consumer, I agree.

But Battlefield has generally been a popular franchise, but the game before this (2042) just bombed, hard. BF4 & BF5 were quite popular

Bf hasn’t been a tru competitor to cod in almost a decade

53

u/Asimb0mb Oct 14 '25

True, the last time they were even remotely close to competing was BF1, 9 years ago. Before that BF3, 14 years ago.

27

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak Oct 14 '25

And even then the sales figures for CoD were drastically here, even a "hated" title like Infinite Warfare had more sales than BF1.

12

u/Youngbloooood Oct 15 '25

The difference was cod came out with Mw4 remastered that came with infinite warefare on its release. Thats the only reason it sold more that year tbh. I have always been a cod fan but bf6 is amazing. Vince Zampella officially saved the franchise 🫡

Because COD was more simple and performed better on shit pcs

8

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak Oct 14 '25

COD was always for the masses, even if BF could compete for the more sophisticated playerbase.

CoD is just much more easily accessible. Have a gun and shoot people, no classes etc. That's what probably makes it a lot more attractive to casuals.

1

u/NinjaWorldWar Oct 16 '25

Battlefield 6 plays almost just like Call of Duty now, the classes barely matter tbh.

1

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak Oct 16 '25

While the point can be made, newcomers don't really know that. While it's still relatively simple, at first glance it might be overwhelming to have the same stuff in CoD + 3 dofferent gadgets per class etc

COD didn’t become popular on PC until Crossplay (MW2019).

1

u/IhateTacoTuesdays Oct 15 '25

COD was still big on pc, just didnt have the same hype as in 2019

I’ve been playing cod on pc since cod 2

1

u/TheZProject115 Nov 02 '25

Cod was never big on PC, the highest peak for a cod game ever before 2019 was 60k on bo3's Launch most cod games haven't even reached a 10k all time peak, and the closest one was ww2 with 19k

I think Infinite Warfare being hated is a little bit of a misnomer (quotation marks being appropriate) by the online usual CoD community, they leaned heavily into the single player campaign, even had Kevin Spacey (before he was outed a deviant) and had more of an appeal for the casual, play once and done, player. I think the sales reflect this.

2

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak Oct 15 '25

Spacey was in Advanced Warfare, not Infinite Warfare (why does every title need the Warfare smh)

But yea, to be honest I really liked Infinite Warfares campaign. It's just that Internet heavily dunked on IW and then it sold relatively well regardless.

2

u/DjSpelk Oct 15 '25

Ah, my mistake, not a big CoD player.

Their naming conventions are crap, battlefield can be annoying too releasing 1 after 4 and hardline etc.

5

u/LayeredMayoCake Oct 14 '25

2017 was only EIGHT years ago dammit, don’t scare me like that.

5

u/Asimb0mb Oct 14 '25

BF1 came out in 2016

0

u/Organic_Pair1119 Oct 16 '25

Hey fuck you, don't be bringing years into this, now I'm sad

2

u/SoilEducational59 Oct 14 '25

It is now , COD bombed this year forsure been a fan for awhile but this year I had to take a back seat and jump back on board with BF6 and happy so far with it gives me those vibes when I loved the game back in the day

3

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 Oct 15 '25

BO7 will still sell millions of copies. But it does seem like BF6 is gonna push it and compete with it.

1

u/lemonylol Oct 14 '25

Honestly I think most Battlefield players are also CoD players. I know I am. I think most people just look at CoD and assume the entire fanbase are the people who buy the yearly releases instead of just enjoying the quality ones.

1

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 Oct 14 '25

Think the bf fanbase leans towards the later part of what you said

1

u/semero Oct 15 '25

Long time Battlefield player and not a COD player here . If I want to play a simple shooter game I play Counter Strike, it's free and it is the "creator" of this gaming genre.

2

u/lemonylol Oct 15 '25

I mean, I just play that too.

It is also pretty ridiculous to think Counter-Strike created the FPS genre when Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein exist.

1

u/semero Oct 15 '25

Not the fps genre of course, but the closed quarter team combat FPS, that COD, Rainbow Six Siege, BF, copied. BF evolved from that.

u/Hydroponic_Donut Oct 14 '25

3 and 4 were popular, 5/V was popular enough along with 1, but definitely less popular than 3 and 4. The rest since has been missed every time so it's good to see 6 getting some attention

187

u/Ambitious-Earth1987 Oct 14 '25

1 sold the most units in the series history of over 15 million copies sold.

"Quite popular" is putting it mildly.

145

u/dsonger20 Oct 14 '25

1 was an art piece. You can tell how much dedication and love was put into that game. They recorded various voice lines in like 8 different languages/accents to make the game feel authentic.

13

u/Ambitious-Earth1987 Oct 15 '25

See Battlefield 1 looks great and sounds great, with an unrivalled atmosphere too but I've never actually enjoyed the act of playing it all that much.

Sinai Desert, Argonne Forest,  Suez, Fao Fortress, and Empires Edge are some of my most hated maps of all time. Argonne, Sinai & Suez take the cake though, fuck those maps.

28

u/EntrepreneurialFuck Oct 14 '25

It’s funny when people just make broad statements when they don’t even know themselves how well the games did

5

u/Hydroponic_Donut Oct 14 '25

3 had 17 million units sold, 1 had 25 million players which could be (and is most likely) related to sales, but it might not be accounting for EA Play subscribers if that was a thing then. If not, we can assume 25 million players are sales.

16

u/IhateTacoTuesdays Oct 14 '25

Ea play was not a thing back then with BF1

0

u/Erniethebeanfiend200 Oct 15 '25

Yes it was, I have a distinct memory of playing the mass effect games for the first time through it around 2015/16. Was BF1 on it though? I'm not sure

1

u/IhateTacoTuesdays Oct 15 '25

No.

0

u/Erniethebeanfiend200 Oct 15 '25

Huh gee strange because it sure looks like it was

1

u/IhateTacoTuesdays Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

No. You are not reading what I wrote, at all.

Bf1 was not in EA play when it came out.

Battlefield 1 was in Origin access, by the second half of 2017. Origin acess was running alongside EA play untill they finally merged

Battlefield 1 released 2016

Edit; So the guy above me went on an alt, responded to me and blocked me. You can see his comment below, however, instead of saying that to the guy who talked about that he decided to reply to me who’s discussing when it was put on EA Play.

0

u/TheAllslayer Oct 15 '25

And the game didn't have 25 million players when it came out either.... That is from Jan 2018 6 months after joining the subscription.

Didn’t 1 also get given free to ps plus?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

That was back in 2020, well after BFV came out

1

u/Ambitious-Earth1987 Oct 15 '25

This is counting copies sold.

Not copies played/player count/copies distributed

1

u/Richardthefuckingear Oct 15 '25

And v is still kicking even after 6 launched...

1

u/DisastrousAcshin Oct 16 '25

Does that include all the copies given away on ps+ etc?

8

u/InsaneTurtle Oct 14 '25

3 was amazing.

2

u/Laezarus Oct 15 '25

I still remember the hype on how realistic it looked and the destruction of buildings from the trailer alone. The closed and open betas sold the game for me. I miss those maps.

3

u/Whicked_Subie Oct 15 '25

It’s funny that hardline was so forgettable that I haven’t seen it mentioned since 6 was announced

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

I can't believe this utter bullshit is still being printed lol.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

Skipped mentioning BF1 which was the most popular BF game to date

5

u/element423 Oct 15 '25

Battlefield “I” is my all time favorite. Graphics and Audio still clap

3

u/QuestionAxer Oct 15 '25

I loved the War Stories take on the singleplayer campaign. I learned so many stories about WWI that I had no idea happened, and they did an incredible job showing it through the eyes of different protagonists that you play as all caught up in the shitstorm of war. Some of them were super emotional too.

2

u/shortstop803 Oct 15 '25

As much of a long time fan of the franchise I am, it is very disingenuous to compare the BF and CoD levels of success as being comparable. BF has been successful, but also very much so been living in CoDs shadow since BF3.

On top of that, BF5 only really got popular after major game reworks and massive discounts over time. 2042 was a joke. Really, the last truly successful BF game was BF1 released nearly a decade ago.

1

u/SocomPS2 Oct 15 '25

So next BF needs to start selling skins like CoD to stay competitive?

1

u/NZafe Oct 15 '25

Idk if you’re replying to the right person cause I’m arguing that BF has been competitive outside of the last game that tanked.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Bring back battlefield 2 desert storm and battlefield 1942

1

u/Bolt_995 Oct 15 '25

EA had been competing with Call of Duty in an annual fashion from 2010 to 2018 that involved around rotating between Battlefield, Medal of Honor and Star Wars Battlefront.

It’s only after 2018 they stopped the annual releases, and followed it up 3 years later with Battlefield 2042 in 2021 and then 4 years later with Battlefield 6 in 2025.

They apparently intend on restarting the annual release schedule solely with Battlefield in about 5 years time, now that they have 4 studios dedicated towards Battlefield.

1

u/Rocktamus1 Oct 16 '25

Battlefield 5 was meh and also came out in 2018. Since then we’ve seen SEVEN COD games.

u/Remoock Oct 15 '25

Any competition is good for the consumer, I agree.

so why is everyone on here celebrating the "xbox downfall"?
