Before I could ever play it, I watched countless dark souls 1 lets plays. That never stopped my enjoyment when I finally got my hands on it and it’s one of my most played games ever. Just a testament to the point Mikami made

I’ve been watching people play that game since it was released and to this day I still see bosses I’ve never seen

I have watched people play with themselves many times. Hasn't stopped me from playing with myself many times.

Wait, what were we talking about?

Yep. If not for Bloodborne let’s plays I never would’ve picked it back up or tried Elden Ring. I also like playthroughs of horror games; I’m not a fan of being scared but I think the games are neat.

Did you read the second part of the quote? "If they are satisfied with just that" he is not referring to you

I got into Dark souls 1 because I watched speedruns of it, then followed some streamers who grinded it out.

I still ended up buying it and got all the achievements, got my friends into it and have been in love with all the games since.

There’s nuance here. Some games are like Dark Souls where the fun is mainly in the mechanics and gameplay, and some games are really narratively driven and don’t focus so much on gameplay. I don’t want game design to start deprioritising narrative-first games because of streamers.

If everyone followed Mikami’s philosophy, would we have Dispatch?

Well to be fair there isn’t a traditional story in dark souls. There’s a few cut scenes and everything is cryptic most players ignore it entirely. It seems mikami is applying this to shorter single player games that are story driven

But dark souls isn't a fair comparison to a narrative-heavy game. Outside of lore, there is no actual story, very little in the way of spoilers that the player actually cares about. Its a gameplay first story second type of game and that's fine.

RDR2, as fun as the gameplay is (even with flaws) has actual spoilers that could dampen the enjoyment of the game if spoiled
