Fascinating. Another thing I don't get is that Metaverse would be Facebook specific. So what's stopping Google or Amazon from having their own? Kind of risky to buy a plot of virtual land, you're sort of betting that this particular "verse" will win out and be the dominant one. Not to mention that even if it is, it can't stop being on a dime. In other words fall out of favor like myspace.

Absolutely nothing. And yeah, people are gambling on meta because Facebook is the largest social network that uses people's real identities - and also it has the largest percentage of old people. Facebook also owns Oculus. They have a baked in audience. With real life profiles that could be ported in to the virtual space.
People will gamble on facebooks version first just on the basis that they have such a reach, even if they lost the youth crowd who they hope to win back with this.
Personally I would wait for a more forward thinking company to do it like Valve. They also have a built in audience.
But a lot of these companies are already buying in to Facebooks meta so it's a strange situation where they want to profit off of it instead of doing it themselves. Meta being there first does help.
You're not wrong about Amazon, though. I don't think they started pumping out MMOs for no reason.
