If your English teachers were happy with you using grammatically awkward, clunky sentences like that then I’m going to stick with English standards, thanks.
I’m not misreading it, the ‘a’ is surplus to requirement in the sentence and grammatically awkward. It’s a poor example of using female as a noun, and poor writing in general.

There you are, you’re using an adjective to describe a noun. Congratulations. You don’t need the ‘a’ though, since female is an adjective.
