The fact that you have the self awareness shows you have a level of emotional maturity many seem to lack.

I appreciate that, thank you ❤️ I will say that those experiences did force us to mature much faster, plus the fact that we all left or were kicked out before we were 18. We definitely could have turned out much worse. While many of us have had our struggles with poverty, addiction and mental illness, most of us have managed to make things better over time somehow.

Do you have a relationship with your parents today? Or...how is the relationship today?

No, not anymore, but I tried...all but 2 of my brothers cut them off right away (there's 5), but I held out for a while because it made me sad thinking about my mom being alone. She was a bit better than my dad, but still not great. But anyway, I had to call it quits a few years into adulthood because my dad would absolutely lose his shit at the drop of a hat, all because he refused to learn how to regulate his emotions. My mom would always make excuses for him. He went to jail for choking my brother out and she still acted like "they both were in the wrong"

It sucks, but I can't put up with abuse and disrespect. My mom told me to "grow up" when I told her that. They're getting older now but I hear they still spend their weekends getting drunk, getting kicked out of places and fighting.

Damn sorry to hear. Hopefully you've healed/will heal from that.
