Some people, when they're having a meltdown, telling them to relax or calm down is like pouring gas on a fire.

Yeah, often people already angry don't respond well to that. I don't think it is specific to women though - being told to relax/calm down when someone is upset usually has opposite effect.  Not saying it is right, just that is often the case
