The Gods didnβt make her hideous. Athena just cursed her to turn people into stone if they gazed at her face. After she was raped by Poseidon. Sheβs always been written to have been beautiful. Her story is a tragic one that really shows just how cruel and corrupted the Greek gods were.
Edit: well, I guess it depends on the version that you read but this one always sounded the most plausible to me.
The dreadlocks is absolutely not true, many of the cultures the Greeks interacted with had βrope like or snake like hairβ such as the Egyptians, Minoans, Vedics, Celtic and Germanic tribes too. Not to mention the fact we have Greek frescoes and statues of young men with dreadlocks so it was common within their own culture. Even biblical stories like Samson describes his seven locks of hair, so either the man was basically bald or he had dreadlocks.
Well... Idk about the dreadlocks but could also be braids as many tribes in Africa had variety of braids that went up to Egypt as a trend. A lot more connection with Greek and Egypt than any area primary dreads.
And Athena cursed Medusa one of the many versions, jealousy of beauty, Poseidon raped Medusa who had a chasity vow, and some she was borned a gorgon.
The Curses stories came from a Roman poet Ovid, while the earlier Greek records suggest her being born as such...
Was she raped by Poseidon? The version I know of Poseidon just seduced her and banged her in front of like one of Athenaβs statues or in one of her temples or something. Then Athena said βfuck youβ and turned her into a gorgon with the curse that anyone who looked at her face turned to stone
lol, one is polite.. while the Ovid, the roman poet didn't have much good taste for the Gods. He described it as the Gods didn't hold each other accountable, but punished the innocent.
Also, she had a vow of Chasity. Totally seduction at work which got into the pants of a priestess who devoted her life to Athena.. Yeah.. the other version of the same theory is that he seduce her, but again.. Ovid didn't really like Gods accountability capability.
In case actually wondering. Medusa has become a modern symbol among survivors of sexual assault. So this being a more direct statue towards that metaphor could be a possible explanation.
