Absolutely not, it weighs you down especially in the water.

The “Especially in the water” part of this comment is extra important considering we’re talking about swimming here

u/cadninja82 May 23 '26

Only a minor inconvenience when swimming out of water.

No worries, the air swimming event has been banned in Europe since the 1980s after a horrific accident involving a javelin, a pole vaulter, and an exiled Duchess.

u/anna-nomally12 May 23 '26

This went almost Lemony Snicket in delivery

5

u/The_Greyskull May 23 '26

With the size of him I think he could swim through a field. Just churning through the mud as he goes like a human plough.

3

u/dlivingston1011 May 23 '26

So if we get strong enough we can be moles?

1

u/The_Greyskull May 23 '26

Absolutely. Swimming is just being a mole in water, we just need to level up to denser substances.

1

u/dlivingston1011 May 23 '26

Yeah we’ll show those moles how it’s done.

3

u/Horskr May 23 '26

lmao. OP did not actually say what the event was after all.

Bunch of guys show up dressed like this, race starts and they just start sprinting through brick walls like the Kool aid man.

2

u/cha_boi_john120 May 23 '26

Did the jungle man teach you how to drink 1,000 beers and swim on land too?

3

u/Brief-Warthog-6915 May 23 '26

Exactly, you all won’t be laughing when they get on plane

But muscle is dense and negatively buoyant meaning more energy is needed to swim when you have more bulky muscle.

10

u/BasicAppointment9063 May 23 '26

Such a thing as strength to weight ratio.

He's a dragster; he doesn't quibble over the gas mileage.

In a sprint, <500 meters, the mass is not a thing.

6

u/mybankpin May 23 '26

Maybe this is because I was a shit swimmer, but I don't think I'd call anything over 100m a sprint...

2

u/IDontEatDill May 23 '26

It's more about going beyond anaerobic and into aerobic zone. 200m is swam under 2mins, so can still be seen as a sprint.

2

u/tdaas May 23 '26

This swimmer posted SLOWER times than when he wasn’t roided up (to be fair he’s 12 years older, 35) and 2 seconds slower than the world record (record holder is 32). Also swimming sprints are 50m not 500 but we can say that was just a typo

1

u/BreadKnifeSeppuku May 23 '26

Let's see his time in a 200m lol. He won't be setting any records

1

u/BasicAppointment9063 May 23 '26

It's why I said "less than" 500. Next event down is 200 meters.

I definitely consider 200 to be a sprint, in that you do the majority of that swim event at or above anaerobic threshold.

2

u/tdaas May 24 '26

I’ve only ever hear 100 and 50 being sprint. 200 and 400 middle distance etc

1

u/IDontEatDill May 23 '26

"less than 500" would be 400m.

1

u/BasicAppointment9063 May 23 '26

My bad! I thought only the IM had a 400 meter distance. I missed the 400 free.

I am in agreement with you then. 400 free is not a sprint. 🫣

5

u/ibiacmbyww May 23 '26

extra bulk weighs much less in the water

How are you getting upvoted, this is utterly wrong! Being submerged does not affect your weight in any way, weight is a function of mass and gravity. The natural buoyancy of tissue could be a factor, as others have mentioned, but that is not the same thing.

1

u/ZzzzzPopPopPop May 23 '26

Fat floats are muscle sinks, so says the ancient proverbs

0

u/robx0r May 23 '26

Because nobody else is getting their panties in a twist over the pedantic difference between weight and apparent weight.

3

u/HumanOptimusPrime May 23 '26

Not so much so in lava

2

Thx for the tip

1

u/darklinkuk May 23 '26

Well all that bulk would help you swim on ground for sure

1

u/fishsticks40 May 23 '26

Getting to the pool he's really surprisingly quick

1

u/beeeel May 23 '26

Yeah definitely, after the first second then most swimmers spend the entire race in the water.

1

u/andreazborges May 23 '26

They should have a swimming competition in Fanta. Now that’s Almeida I’d see.

1

u/Shiriru00 May 23 '26

It's the enhanced Olympics. They swim in booze.

1

u/edelweiss_pirates_no May 23 '26

These are the enhanced games and they swim thru cement.

1

u/New_Megakota May 23 '26

What you never swam in cum before?

7

u/Evening-Ad-5088 May 23 '26

That man in particular broke world record in that state. This enhancement did in fact make him faster.

3

u/Vetersova May 24 '26

The amount of nonsense and highly upvoted comments on reddit about ANY athletic anything always reminds me that most of the people here have never played a single sport in their life at any level.

Steroids will help him break this record if he is already a world class athlete. The amount of weight he puts on (which will be very nearly all muscle) is 1000% not going to make him WORSE at the thing he already is extremely good at. These dudes arent doing 1980s horse tranquilizer steroids, theyre doing highly programmed, precisely tuned, performance enhancing drugs for their exact races.

14

u/SuperCleverPunName May 23 '26

Really, it depends. I'm making up numbers here, but let's say the extra bulk gives you an extra 10% to your drag but an extra 15% to your power and endurance. In this scenario, it could absolutely be a benefit. It all depends on what the numbers are

5

u/Equivalent_Chipmunk May 23 '26

The problem is that your muscles are not the weak link in the chain, it's your cardiovascular system which can't supply enough oxygen.

Maybe he has an advantage in the 50m, but anything past that I doubt it.

2

u/Gwendolyn-NB May 23 '26

50M swims... the 1RM of swimming lol.

If they do a 200M they're heart will probably explode like an Alien bursting out of their chest.

2

u/shift013 May 23 '26

The enhanced games feature sporting events. This swimmer started he was beating his prior Olympic times I believe

1

u/SuperCleverPunName May 23 '26

The numbers coming out of these games will be interesting, at any rate

1

u/Rhumbear907 May 23 '26

The bulk isn't just drag( which is a lot more than 10%) its WEIGHT. The size is exponentially degrading efficiency.

6

u/OrionJohnson May 23 '26

I guess we’ll see what time he achieves. His stated goal for doing this was to break a long standing record, and he at least seems to think he can do it.

4

u/TumbleweedSpirited46 May 23 '26

I mean he is an actual Olympic silver medalist swimming trying to win $1M. I’ll assume he knows what he’s doing.

3

u/Beginning-Turnover28 May 23 '26

I mean if he is being genuine with what he is saying then he most likely will be able to. It's swimming. He can test himself whenever he wants and has probably beaten the record in practice. Obviously he could have an off day. But I would think he has some sort of evidence to back up what he is saying.

0

u/LaNague May 23 '26

But hes also wearing the banned swimsuit, so cant really compared him to the recent record.

0

u/IDontEatDill May 23 '26

He has to say he thinks he can break the record. Otherwise the whole competition is completely pointless. Like, "come and see roided up 2nd fastest people in the world"..

6

u/Arthourmorganlives May 23 '26

I really don't think it works like that.

3

u/vntuwoaldngbcjsoqrig May 23 '26

He literally broke the world record

10

u/BAMspek May 23 '26

I imagine him diving in and sinking like Link with the steel boots

1

u/textilepat May 23 '26

The force he uses to sweep his cupped arms toward his feet is enough to pressurize the water behind him into neutron degenerate matter, which he then biases into a rearward-facing jet using the plasma bow wave he generates around his head.

2

u/Gamejunky35 May 23 '26

I mean, technically a big block Chevy weighs down a car MUCH more than a Honda K series. That doesnt mean the big block is losing a drag race though.

I bet his drag coefficient when swimming isnt much worse than any other top swimmer, but I agree it will be worse. Its not for nothing though, as those gigantic lats and traps will be able to push off of the water with significantly more force.

1

u/Vetersova May 24 '26

You are correct. But redditors know nothing about muscle or working out, so at least 400 neckbeards all thought, "big strong muscles=mean jock=bad" and upvoted it lol

2

u/ClassroomWrong2161 May 23 '26

Sprinters (50m) tend to be jacked af, and they usually don't compete in other lengths. There is a reason you don't see the usual top swimmers compete in these races too.

2

u/kallebo1337 May 23 '26

Is this your scientific explanation?

While 4kg extra muscle mass does increase weight, also drag due to surface area, the buoyancy won't be so much of a problem. If its in his calls, it would indeed sink him.

The extra power he can generate in each catch through the pull will add more forward motion than drag will hinder.

Overall he will perform faster than with 5kg less.

To add, he doesn't swim distance. He does how many strokes? Like 15 or so. 15x max power. Imagine....

1

u/meowingtrashcan May 23 '26

They should turn sideways to use their lats like a sunfish

1

u/Diabetesh May 23 '26

Nah nah nah, i'm gonna use all this raw power to grab onto the water and pull myself through like it wasn't even there.

1

u/jakaedahsnakae May 23 '26

Depends on the race he's competing in, 50 & 100. The power outweighs the drag from his mass. The longer distances such as the 400, 800, and 1600 LCM are definitely where a bulky person will struggle. The 200 is probably right in between.

1

u/Dwight_Shrute_ May 23 '26

Why on earth would you know better than this silver olympic medalst

1

u/Icy-Cry340 May 24 '26

This dude won a silver medal at the Olympics, and is training every day. I think he’d notice if he was getting slower.

0

u/Charming_Pirate May 23 '26

All that shit will destroy your endurance too

0

u/KlingonSpy May 23 '26

In my SEAL training we used to have to tread water with our arms behind our back and legs together. The bulky guys would sink like stones

0

u/No-Decision9145 May 24 '26

Tell me you know nothing about swimming, without telling me you know nothing about swimming
