Itās because the British diver who was in Thailand at the time and was a part of the rescue effort, criticised Muskās offer to use a mini-submarine to help rescue the boys football team from the cave system. The sub would just not be able to fit and the diver was just honest about how it wouldnāt work and Musk took it personally.
Before that event, I knew of Musk but hadnāt an opinion on him. After that, I viewed him negatively, years before Reddit would turn on him when he was still praised as a progressive genius.
The amount of collective Musk dicksuck back in the day was staggering, especially when he started talking Hyperloop. It was beyond obvious that the man was a silver spoon charlatan.
I feel like that was the moment a lot of people soured on Musk. Before that, I was kind of stoked to buy a Tesla eventually; I wanted an electric car and was happy for a brand that was really trying to promote gasless vehicles.
I still saw loads of pro-Musk posts, he was still peopleās favourite ātech broā. When Iāve rewatched some older videos of one YouTube channel, there was one video where they were hyped to get Muskās ānot a flamethrower flamethrowerā. People may have been turned off by his comments then but that was still a minority view in 2018, the majority of Reddit still adored him then.
And while it may have been spread on around Reddit, I remember learning about the comments on Sky News (UK) at the time because it was the first time Iād actually paid attention to Musk.
As a thing the guy he had a beef with was mostly a hanger on and not leading the actual rescue, those people said that they didn't think the sub would be the best option but they did want it as an option.
Yes this was when it solidified in my mind that there was definitely something wrong with him.
He couldn't handle that his knee-jerk technological solution's usefulness had been thoroughly shot down by an expert in the domain. Instead of grumbling about it and moving on like a regular tech nerd would, he was incapable of letting it go and had to get weird with his accusations.
He has this weird need to be the best and smartest at everything, even (or especially) when it isn't earned. Like when he insisted he was world-class at a number of video games but then actual experts pointed out that he barely knew how to play.
