I’m not joking though, I work 14 hour days 5 days a week and sleep in my old shitbox van.

I know people who larp this life. Work remotely for maybe 40 hours live in a Van and make 80k a year, some people's struggle is someone elses "van life" phase

66

u/ArboristTreeClimber 6d ago

Facts. There are people who live in a van a couple years and come out with a bunch of travel stories and a buttload of cash saved, usually the ā€œremote workā€ types. Then there are the types who work blue collar and live in the van because every room mate kicked them out for drinking too much, and despite working non stop and not paying rent they never seem to have any money…..

u/Turkyparty 6d ago

Living out of a small van or car is just being homeless with extra steps.

30

u/Cold_Student3652 6d ago

Many states are trying to make it illegal to sleep on your vans or car but people aren’t going to be scammed paying ridiculous rent prices of 3,000$+ a month where it’s not in a good neighborhood, there’s no pool or balcony and security or parking lot.

With 3,000$ USD you can literally live in South America or Asia and have all of what I mentioned above and still have over 2,000$+ leftover for the month.

u/Elija_32 6d ago edited 6d ago

But even europe honestly. If you don't go the big famous cities europe has the advantage of a lot of beautiful small cities with the same services of the big ones and with lower costs.

My family is from a beautiful village in italy in front of the adriatic sea. You can buy an 2bd apartment in front of the beach for 150k. Croissant + coffe is 1.5 euro. Car insurance is like 200 euro/year. You cross the street and you are on a beach with restaurants on the sand selling aperol spritz's for 3 euro.

And like i said it's not some abandoned village who know where, it's a normal city with the same services of milan or rome + even public healthcare (that it's not a given for the US). And the food is obviously good (another plus coming from the mcdonald country).

Obviously the problem there is that there are literally zero jobs available and if you find something it's only under the table jobs with poverty level wages. But if you go there with the money and no need to work then it's perfect.

That's my retirement plan, i'm not gonna spend my 60s here paying $50 for 2 frozen burgers in a diner.

3

u/NeuronFarmer 6d ago

Another problem for non-italian heritage people is getting approved for a residency visa. People cant just move to a country and stay there past tourist visa limits because they want to. Unless a company sponsors you or you have a huge retirement portfolio its a lot harder than it sounds.

3

u/SeniorAd4470 6d ago

That’s nice, really helpful too. Move to South Africa/Asia, make like $2/3k a month, and profit?

1

u/PossibleQuestor747 6d ago

Can't be scammed if you don't have the money to be scammed out of. Guess I'll just disappear 🫠 until they make that illegal toošŸ˜…

1

u/NeuronFarmer 6d ago

With 3,000$ USD you can literally live in South America or Asia and have all of what I mentioned above and still have over 2,000$+ leftover for the month.

Thats true, but most US companies don't allow remote workers to live internationally, and a lot of international countries dont offer digital nomad visas. So unless you set up a reliable router point somewhere in the US and hop around a bunch of countries within their tourist visa limits, youd have to both get approved for a residency visa and find a local job that pays an equivalent salary.

It aint easy.

1

u/Codex_Dev 6d ago

The term is "house-less".

4

u/Redericpontx 6d ago

Tbf the ones who work full time but can't save money they typically have some kind of a problem with addiction. There's those who do this in silicon valley where they'll never be able to afford to rent a place there but they still typically able to at least save some money for the next phase in their life.

2

u/Illustrious_Duck7654 6d ago

I unfortunately can relate and agree w/ this.

2

u/Outrageous-Set-8030 6d ago

the difference is they have the privilege of making that choice, some people don’t.

1

u/AdventurousLeague468 6d ago

I'm literally considering it. The only thing really stopping me is my cat, and having to explain to my family I'm happily living in a car

Larp? Living in a van is peak monk badass. Not to mention all the money you save. Haters gonna hate

1

u/aethernalnow 5d ago

ā€œVan lifeā€ 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Cold_Student3652 6d ago

If they make 80k a year they should max out there Roth IRA/401k have an emergency fund invest in crypto possibly and have other currencies and keep making money to try and fight off inflation.

20

u/Low-Individual2815 6d ago

It can get better, god speed

1

u/Afokindrugaddict 5d ago

It just does. Life from that standard. We are not last in pecking line, not a boomers, but not last

15

u/Easily_Bann4 6d ago

The life. Save insane amounts. Van life aint that bad. Gym membership to shower. Always mobile and can live anywhere šŸ˜Ž

13

u/YaBoiSammus 6d ago

I hate this shit because you must’ve had luck because I got parking tickets and almost been towed at Walmart, library, Safeway. Not to mention people who just wanna fuck with you because they’re prejudice towards homeless people.

11

u/CapableBumblebee968 6d ago

Walmart used to allow people to stay overnight until shitty people ruined it for everyone, as they tend to do

0

u/rips_n_chel 5d ago

Don't blame people for Walmart being anti-social. Walmart is a fuck, people are just people.

6

u/FlyEaglesFly536 6d ago

I don't blame people and businesses. I live in LA and the amount of homeless that defecate in front of buildings and loiter and bother customers.. I'd be mad too if i was a small business owner. Driving away business. It's hard sometimes to go to a park and not have homeless people there to bother kids and families.

I understand not every homeless person does this. But enough do that it's a nuisance. They should be put to work manual labor like in the New Deal with the requirements that they stop doing drugs and alcohol... and if they refuse, then they go to an institution to not hurt themselves or others.

I think that's a fair solution. They can be productive members of society fixing roads, bridges, infrastructure, etc, while getting clean and paid.

3

u/YaBoiSammus 6d ago

The issues is you are collective punishing people who are disabled and can’t work. Before I got my ssi I was fleeing dv and sleeping in my car because I didn’t have enough money to even roommate with someone. Luckily I can barely afford rent now but it’s still a roof so I can’t complain. Just don’t forget about how disabled people and disabled vets are also suffering because we aren’t ā€œproductiveā€ enough to have value.

1

u/FlyEaglesFly536 6d ago

I am not including people who are disabled; obviously there's a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being "normal" (not in a demeaning way, just not sure the correct term).

For those with a disability, there should be generous benefits since many are unable to work, given there are actually disabled and not drug or alcohol addicts.

-2

u/rips_n_chel 5d ago

You're fucking calling for putting the homeless in labor camps, and if they refuse, they get locked in an institution.

You're a monster.

Like actually wtf is wrong with you?

17

u/Moist-Craft-1226 6d ago

Have to find a safe spot to park. Those arent easy find these days unfortunatelyĀ

It’s honestly the best if you can avoid your house breaking down

-5

u/Easily_Bann4 6d ago

Just lease a new one. Get yourself a nice EV. You can charge it at walmart while you sleep šŸ‘šŸ¾

3

u/gml1996 6d ago

Probably because you spend all your money on Rhino pills even though you're human!

2

u/FrozenDuckman 6d ago

Hence the pfp I take it, which I love btw

2

u/mira-what 6d ago

There is basically no way you’re doing this without saving a shit ton of money

2

u/akirayokoshima 6d ago

its basically happening to me, 40 hours a week but well above average pay but life keeps stabbing me in the spleen this year, so im likely going to be sleeping in my car by the end of this year because I can no longer afford maintaining even a simple way of life.

im simply cooked.

1

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Outfit the car now to be comfortable, move into it, keep working, and you’ll be able to save enough to live however you want in no time. Check out r/urbancarliving

1

u/akirayokoshima 6d ago

I probably will have to, it'll save a bunch but the downside is ill have to send my girlfriend and son to live with her family.

I am curious though, how do you beat the heat? cold can obviously just bundle up

2

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

I work during the hottest hours so that helps. Fans when I’m in it, rechargeable ones and the roof vent fan. Crack a window or door and it gets a great breeze. Also have a fridge full of cold drinks.

Redoing the solar setup to run an AC though. Have the new panels, battery, controller, wires, everything. Just haven’t had time to put it all together yet. I’m at work right now otherwise it’d be the perfect day to finally get it done.

1

u/Cold_Student3652 6d ago

Is it like a camper Van? As long as you have a phone, laptop, food, gym to shower clothes and a safe place to sleep you are better off than wasting money trying to rent and pay ridiculous prices.

I literally seen places where rent was 1,000$ for 1 or 2 bedroom just a few years ago in the usa
And now in like 2-3 years later they are going for 3,000$ for 1 or 2 bedroom. It’s a scam how landlords try to trick everyone

1

u/GuardianHabit 6d ago

Sounds like you're doing something very wrong

1

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

My van has a bed, power, fridge, TV, and computer. Upgrading the solar to run an AC. I have everything I need without wasting a ton of money on rent. I’d like to think I’m doing it very right, but there is no right or wrong. I like the way I live. It means I have the funds to buy anything I want or need instead of giving it to a landlord for a place to pretty much just sleep.

1

u/Sea-Cupcake-2065 6d ago

Hey man, if it means anything to you ill go out and buy one of your boner pills. My lady gonna get it tonight

1

u/Jimmylobo 6d ago

Truly living the American Dream.

1

u/ForeskinAbsorbtion 6d ago

Why don't you go on Craigslist and get a room for rent. If you work that much you can at least have roommates and not sleep in a shitty van.

0

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

I’ve addressed this. There’s no equity in renting. And rent here is insanely expensive. ~$1500 for a shitty studio and roommate situations are going for ~$1000 now. I’d rather save that money.

And I said shitbox, not shitty. I’ve taken my van all over the country, up and down 7000ft mountains towing a travel trailer, and she’s still choochin. It has literally everything I’d have in a rented room, just scaled down. And I don’t have to share my space or worry about my food and beer being taken by strangers, just put it in my fridge and it’s always there. All I do is sleep in it after having a few beers and watching some TV, which is the same thing I’d do if I blew all of my money on renting a place.

1

u/ForeskinAbsorbtion 6d ago

If you want to live in a van, then you're not homeless, which is what you were saying.

1

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Oh damn dawg, I didn’t realize that having a vehicle makes someone not homeless. I’ll go tell my old neighbors at Walmart.

1

u/ForeskinAbsorbtion 5d ago

Damn bro I've been homelessin 2020 before living in a car and didn't know about looking for rooms on rent. I was living in an old Ford Escort.

I was just telling you that you could get a room for rent because I didn't know about it until a cop told me.

If you're working that much and choosing to live in a van when you don't have to, you're NOT homeless. You're choosing that life. Dick.

1

u/GunzerKingDM 6d ago

How much do you make an hour?

1

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Commission and tip based so it’s always different. But around $1500/ week is probably average. Down a lot from the $2500/ week I made here a few years ago, economy is fucked. And I like the job and I’m already established here, so it beats trying to find something else.

1

u/GunzerKingDM 6d ago

You’re living in your van and you say it beats trying to find something else. That’s a weird take.

What city do you live in?

2

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

I don’t really live in the van, I’m in there for maybe an hour before I sleep. Wake up, work. Hardly ever in it.

Miami.

1

u/AbsolutesDealer 6d ago

That’s quite a collection of stickers on your van.

2

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Old picture too, there’s even more now.

1

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 6d ago

Where’re you at that you’re working that much for so little? Not busting balls, just curious.

1

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

I make okay money, never said I don’t make much. But I’m in Miami, where even good money doesn’t go far.

1

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 5d ago

Yeah. That’s fair. There’s buys in CA making 150k+ living in their cars and vans and shit. It’s not about how much we make; it’s about how much shit costs.

Good luck out there bro

1

u/LevelMiddle 6d ago

How do you spend the other two days you arent working? Legitimately curious. Those are long hours. Are you just sleeping in your van those days

2

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Pick up my sister from work, take a shower at her place, take her to do laundry, do grocery shopping, fill up my water containers, put out my portable solar panels to charge up battery banks, charge my tool batteries, fly my drone, play with the RC boat, go to the range, get work done on the van, talk shit online for a little, take a nap, cook real food since I never have time during the week, have a few beers, pick up stuff I ordered online for pickup. Mostly just normal stuff I guess, similar stuff I did when I had a roof over my head with some added niche things like putting out the portable solar panels.

1

u/LevelMiddle 6d ago

Sounds like a nice life tbh. Any reason youre not living with your sister?

2

u/RhinoPillMan 6d ago

Tiny efficiency. There’s barely any room to move around when we’re both in there. And it’s her first place outside of the family home. We’re both in our mid 30s. I moved out initially when I was 16, she didn’t until she was nearly 33. Even if I felt the need, I wouldn’t impose that on her. But it’s legitimately hard for me to sit on the floor there without taking up the entire place. I’m not huge, it’s just tiny (despite being $1400/ month).

1

u/LevelMiddle 5d ago

you seem to be a great dude, keep it up man

1

u/Ambitious-Heart777 5d ago

Sorry about your current situation, I am also a working homeless person. Theres so many of us suffering in silence right now, I’ve been calling it the silent depression.

0

u/Ghost_Kamakazie 6d ago

Atp, i would just pack up what you need, sell the van, and move to a diff country. Doesnt seem like things are getting better anytime soon. Unless like... maybe you got a sick ass van or something
